Chapter – III (3rd Week)

Creating Your Own Video Resources

ABOUT THIS WEEK:

1. There are two main sections and ten sub-sections in Week 3. The ideas is about how to

create one own video resources. Start by going through learning dialogues on Visual

presentations. Then will be directed on how to create video resources using selected

screencasting software. Also there is an interesting LxI activity that will require to interact

with peers in the Discussion Forum.

2. The section on Visual Presentation should be COMPLETED BEFORE THE FIRST A-

VIEW SESSION scheduled to take place on Saturday, 24-March-2018 from 9:30 am IST

3. Each subsection will contain one or more than one unit.

4. Each video in a unit is followed by one or more practice activities.

5. It is advised to continue writing all points using ICT tools, Avoid use of Pen and Paper

for course Journal. (Snapshots or any Pen & Paper work will not be attached here after)

Visual Presentation Skills 1:

In the following learning dialogue, Dr. Sameer Sahasrabudhe explains the different considerations.

Video Link – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bh7xGqJOZts&feature=youtu.be

Reflection Spot: Assume that you are planning to create a slide with your subject content and

uploaded it to your WordPress website. You are creating this as an open educational resource

(OER) so that everyone can access and use it. What visual parameters will you take care of during

your slide design so that your website visitors find it easier to understand?

Selection of data – Planning – Execution of presentation.

Open Educational Resources: OER

Plan Execute Impress

Brainstorm Outline Colour Schemes

Analyse Bulleted Details Typography

Organize Graphics Visual Effects & Appeal

– PRACTICE

15 | P a g e FDP101x Part-1_JainNilesh108

Graphics Types: -

o Decorative – add aesthetic appeal or humor

o Representational – depict an object in realistic function

o Mnemonic – Converting a graphic in a form that the brain remembers it better.

o Organizational – Showing qualitative relationships e.g. Map

o Relational – Showing quantitative relationships e.g. graphs / pie-chart.

o Transformational – Shows changes over time and space.

o Interpretive – Illustrate theory or a principle labeled arrows/colours.

– by Clark & Lyons

Visual Presentation Skills 2:

Consideration using Fonts & Colors in slide Design.

Video Link – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_y-wpF8WRaM&feature=youtu.be

Reflection Spot: Given that you know how to design visuals from the previous learning dialogue,

what do you think are the considerations you have to make when using fonts and colors in slide

design? How many font types, font sizes and colors will you use in the design of your slides?

May be 3 to 4 fonts with not more than 3 colors for a professional presentation

Aerial font would be suited best for the same with Main heading of size 28 Pt. Sub Heading

of size 24 Pt. and Bulleted content of size 20 to 22 Pt.

Color: Mood / Expression / Convention meanings

Color Guidelines: color should be selected in such a manner that the strain on eyes should

be negligible for the learners or any other who is audience for your presentation.

- More Contrast = More readability

- Dim Light room = White Text on Black Background

- Bright room = Black text on White Background

- Color should suit’s your topic

- Use Neutral colors like (Grey, Browns, Blue-Grey, etc…)

No Vivid/Pale Color = less readability

Typography: To lend Emphasis

-Bold / Italic / Underline / Color

Never do all together for a particular presentation slide it may look over emphasis.

- Use minimum 2 to 3 fonts

- Use only 1 font option to emphasis (rarely 2)

- Use Left Sided Alignment (Sometimes Template dependent)

- Use Grid

16 | P a g e FDP101x Part-1_JainNilesh108

Impress: Contents of presentation

- An Informative Visual

- An appropriate design

- A suitable strategy

General Guidelines: by Mr. Murphy

- Use 6 x 6 rules. So, not more than 6 points on a slide and not more than 6 words in each

point.

- Template which promotes readability, typically small fonts become very difficult.

- Use phrases or abbreviated sentences rather than full sentences, because that will

minimize your word count.

- Use a Sans Serif font like what I have used here for presentations.

- A San Serif font like Helvetica or Arial or others things, right.

- Typically use high-quality graphics and reinforce your message using them.

- Give the reference at the end of the page or the slide.

- Use the effects like animation and other things sparingly only if they are required and

necessary for communicating something important.

- Highlight the important information like you see in the entire slide.

- Try to make a one-page hand out of presentation and give it out to all the people who are

attending in advance. So that they can follow what you are trying to say.

Learning Experience Interaction:

Scenario: You have been assigned to teach a course of your preference in a new class of 80

students. The class is arranged in such a way that there are ten rows of eight students each. You

are required to prepare your first lecture (with four slides) consisting of the following parts: Title

slide, Course Objectives, Course Outline and Assessment strategy.

OTHER SOFTWARE TOOLS:

There are many software packages that you can use to create your own open educational

resources. Please check this Wikipedia page that compares the various Screencast softwares

available.

The softwares marked with GPL (GNU General Public License) in this list come under the

Copyleft, allowing users to freely distribute and modify the original program.

The following non-GPL softwares are also popularly used.

1. Screencast-o-matic

2. Techsmith Jing (for Windows and OSX)

3. Techsmith Camstatia (for Windows)

4. Quicktime (for OSX)

20 | P a g e FDP101x Part-1_JainNilesh108

Resource Creation in various local languages:

Now that you have a list of screencast softwares with you, select the one with which you feel

more comfortable. Use this software to create a screencast on "How to create a webpage using

WordPress?" with audio narration in your local vernacular language.

for e.g. if you are from Tamil Nadu, you will create a screencast in Tamil, or if you are from

West Bengal, you should create this in Bengali.

After you have created the screencast, publish this in YouTube by keeping the video in Creative

Commons. Share the creation experience in the below discussion forum by answering the below

focus questions.

FOCUS QUESTIONS

1. What all guidelines did you follow while creating your own screencast?

2. What were the challenges that you faced while creating the screencast?

Instructions for discussion

1. First share the YouTube link of the screencast that you created.

2. Answer the above 2 focus questions.

3. Go and visit 3 peers' posts and provide 1 solution for overcoming the challenges that they

posted.

Resource Creation and Peer Review

About Peer Review of resources created:

In a massive open online course like FDP101x, learners will be creating a lot of resources.

However, it will be difficult for the course instructors to evaluate each and every resource. Peer

review is one mechanism that is employed in such massive courses to assess such huge number of

subjective assignments.

Watch the two learning dialogues that explain the idea of Peer Review in an online learning

platform and provide you with an example of how "Peer Review" is conducted in IITBombayX

platform.
