Councillor’sCommentby Councillor Dean Davies

What a fantastic response the people of Featherstonhave made to the recent plea by the Food Bank.Everyone was overwhelmed by the generosity and thecupboards are now full. But remember in a few monthstime they could be empty again, so please next timeyou’re passing Turret House pop in and drop off a fewitems.

A number of people have expressed their concern thatCouncil is now charging (from 1 August 2008) forgreen waste disposal at the Recycling Centres. Thischarging brings us into line with both Carterton andMasterton, where the same fee of $5.00 is chargedfor a boot load of green waste. Although Council wasreluctant to impose such a fee, there is a cost toCouncil with the processing and removal of thiswaste. If Council had not imposed a fee we would

have had to include this in the rates, which would meanfurther rates increases. So it’s a case of user pays.

Greater Wellington Regional Council is looking toestablish a Lake Wairarapa Wetlands Park. Theyintend to form an Establishment Group withrepresentatives from The Department of Conservation,Greater Wellington Regional Council, SouthWairarapa District Council, Kahungunu ki Wairarapa,Rangitne ö Wairarapa and Wairarapa Moana Hapu.During this process there will be wider consultationwith all users of the lake and its surrounds, localresidents and other interested parties. The long termgoal and vision is going to be exciting and of benefitto Featherston and the Wairarapa with improvedfacilities, new walkways and tourism opportunities. We will certainly keep you informed as more newscomes our way.

August marks the start of our new CEO Dr JackDowds. To follow is an extract from a press releasewritten by Mayor Staples;

“Dr Dowds was Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor,Executive Director and Head of Accountancy atMassey University College of Business until 2005and has just completed a fixed term contract withUCOL. He has very strong financial andmanagement skills which we believe will be criticalif South Wairarapa District Council is to remainviable into the future. Although he has an academicbackground, Jack Dowds is very much a peopleperson who is looking forward to a new career thathas a strong community focus.”

St John delightedby response“So many excellent people responded to our plea in last month’sPhoenix that St John will soon be confident in being able tocomplete a full roster and keep the Featherston ambulancecrewed in compliance with the District Health Board’s needs,”says Featherston Area Chairman Grahame Alecock.“At present, the Featherston ambulance is crewed by NationalCertificate officers Sue Jones and Cath Wedderburn and Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Officer Colin Robinson. This istoo great a task for three people to maintain long-term.”“We are delighted that we now have 15 or 16 excellentpotential recruits. They’re working now on background andmedical checks, and some already have their First Aidqualification.”St John is currently changing ambulance training, and the newrecruits will be studying on-line, with practical workshops todemonstrate and reinforce their newly-learned skills.Featherston’s Area Ambulance Co-ordinator Heather Marchsays she’s very impressed by the volunteers who have comeforward.“Many of them have relevant health qualifications already, and all of them have the sort of experience and life skills thatsuggest that they could become excellent ambulance officers,”she says.It is not too late to join this exciting and worthwhile group – ifyou think you might be interested call Heather on 308 8591

Meet the gentle Reanne Tawharu of

“TWO HANDS MASSAGE”Reanne started her journey in Natural Healing working inSpain, which, like all NZ OE travelers, helped to supporther to get from A to B. Arriving back in the U.K. shecontinued working in a couple of clinics part time andwouldn’t you know it she met her future husband, Brendon.Reanne & Brendon have an 18th month child Shayden.

Moving to Australia, Reanne furthered her studies inTherapeutic Massage. Here she gained certificates inAromatherapy, Hot Stone Therapy, Sport, ReflexologyMassage, Alang Relaxation and Therapeutic Massage.

Then like for many New Zealanders home called. Reanneand her husband settled in Featherston, last year in August. For the first time in her life she felt really grounded but alsofelt at home. Reanne tells me that there is no place she’drather be. The people are fantastic and she is really gratefulfor all the support the local businesses have given her.Reanne just loves Featherston.

One of the oldest and simplest forms of therapy, Reanne’swish is to encourage everyone to experience her massagebenefits. There are huge gains to be had from touch therapywhich are amazing and much needed in today’s fast pace

society. While each healer is different, Reanne offers herown unique style.

Many potential clients ask her, ‘what is Massage Therapy?’

Benefits include, ‘it stimulates circulation and encouragesblood flow which accelerates the healing process. Easesmuscle tension and alleviates stiffness and increase flexibilityand improves range of motion. To assist in eliminating waste, massage helps to push toxins out of the muscles and into thelymphatic system. Massage reduces blood pressure andstrengthens the immune system.’ It is great for stressmanagement and allows you to stop, giving time for oneselfto relax mind, body and soul.

Reanne’s ‘catch cry’ is, “to treat all my clients each asindividuals whilst offering them a unique and affordableexperience in a safe and secure environment”.

You can find Two Hands clinic at: 42 Fitzherbert Street,Featherston.

Opening hours are: Tuesday to Saturday 8.30am to 4.30pmwith late night Friday by appointment.

The US standard railway gauge (distance between the rails)is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That’s an exceedingly odd number.

Why was that gauge used? Because that’s the way they builtthem in England, and English expatriates built the US railways.

Why did the English build them like that? Because the firstrail lines were built by the same people who built the pre-railway tramways, and that’s the gauge they used.

Why did ‘they’ use that gauge then? Because the peoplewho built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that theyused for building waggons, which used that wheel spacing.

Why did the waggons have that particular odd wheel spacing?Well, if they tried to use any other spacing, the waggon wheelswould break on some of the old, long distance roads in England, because that’s the spacing of the wheel ruts.

So who built those old rutted roads? Imperial Rome built thefirst long distance roads in Europe (and England ) for theirlegions. The roads have been used ever since.

And the ruts in the roads? Roman war chariots formed theinitial ruts, which everyone else had to match for fear ofdestroying their waggon wheels. Since the chariots were madefor Imperial Rome, they were all alike in the matter of wheelspacing. Therefore the United States standard railway gaugeof 4 feet, 8.5 inches is derived from the original specificationsfor an Imperial Roman war chariot. Bureaucracies live forever.

So, the next time you are handed a Specification/ Procedure/Process and wonder ‘What horse’s arse came up with it?’you may be exactly right.

Imperial Roman army chariots were made just wide enoughto accommodate the rear ends of two war horses. (Twohorses’ arses.) Now, the twist to the story:

When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, thereare two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the mainfuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBsare made by Thiokol at their factory in Utah The engineerswho designed the SRBs would have preferred to make thema bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from thefactory to the launch site. The railway line from the factoryhappens to run through a tunnel in the mountains, and theSRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly widerthan the railway track, and the railway track, as you nowknow, is about as wide as two horses’ behinds. < B>

So, a major Space Shuttle design feature of what is arguablythe world’s most advanced transportation system wasdetermined over two thousand years ago by the width of ahorse’s arse.

And you thought being a horse’s arse wasn’t important?Ancient horse’s arses control almost everything...andCURRENT horses arses are controlling everything else!!

A plea from St Teresa’sSchool StudentsOver the last month our school has suffered at thehands of “people” destroying our school. We havehad 5 windows smashed and broken. This makes sucha mess with glass all over the classrooms and ourdedicated caretaker – Mrs Walker – always comes andcleans it up. We think this is not fair that she has todo extra work because of these people. The moneythat has to be spend on fixing these things means it isless money for us as students. Many of our outsideseats have been damaged because of skateboarders andthis has meant that skateboarding has been banned fromthe school grounds. It is a shame just because ‘people’can’t behaviour or respect other people’s property. We have also had the guttering around the schooldamaged, a hole put in a wall, wooden decks damagedand a light pulled out as well as lots of rubbish leftbehind by these people using our grounds. OurPrincipal – Mrs Pilcher – has now installed securitylights and may have to install security cameras.

We would like help from the community.

If you see people playing in our school grounds andnot using them with respect PLEASE contact thePolice or the school office – you may have to leave amessage – 308 9064.

We are happy for anyone to use the school grounds-as long as they use them appropriately and withrespect.

Restoration of FeatherstonCemetery GravesitesBeginsA group has been formed to raise funds to restore some ofthe oldest and most dilapidated graves in the FeatherstonCemetery. The organisation is working with the HistoricCemeteries Conservation Trust of New Zealand. which wasformed, in part. to foster a greater awareness of the historicalvalue of cemeteries in all communities throughout NewZealand. Friends of the Featherston Cemetery will initiallyfocus on the restoration often gravesites. with the hope ofraising additional funds over time to tackle a few more eachyear.

Why focus on our cemetery? To many, cemeteries are aplace to lay their loved ones to rest, hut not necessarily muchmore than that. In fact, however, they are places that carrygreat heritage and historical value. Cemeteries document thelives of all: rich or poor, prominent or humble. Memorialsenable visitors to conduct genealogical research and historiansto interpret the social and economic development of aparticular region. particularly an area such as Featherston, which was settled so long ago.

The oldest graves in the Featherston cemetery reflect theelaborate funerary and mourning customs people routinelypractised during the 19th century. Inscriptions in themonuments exhibit a range of feelings and personalities: thepiety of the deceased, the satisfaction of a life well-lived, acalm acceptance of death on the part of the mourners. deepsorrow, humility, and even anger.

Featherston’s gravestones tell a wonderful story of thosewho lived and died in our midst: from “Baby Max” buried, with no other inscription, in a tiny oval, and “Darling LittleRita Catherine”, who was three years, eight months old, toThomas, aged 40, accidentally killed at Cross Creek in 1904.Conserving their legacies is what the Friends of FeatherstonCemetery aims to accomplish, even if only through therestoration of a few graves at a time.

Initially, FOFC is working on setting up a Trust to enablefunds to be raised and donated. tax free. and also to applyfor grant funds from pub charities and the like. An estimateon the cost of restoring the first ten headstones is soon to bereceived from Roger Hore of Headstones Wairarapa, anexpert in the field of headstone and memorial restoration.Once the estimate is received and tile Trust has been set up,the next step will be to apply for the first of several grants. Ifyou would like to become involved in this extremely satisfyingproject, contact Elizabeth Tremayne at 308-8277 [email protected].

The Featherston Community Centre ran anothersuccessful School Holiday Programme on Monday14th, Wednesday, 16th Thursday 17th and Friday 18th

July.

Monday featured Puppet Making in the morningfollowed by a Puppet Show in the Afternoon. Wedefinitely have some talented children in Featherston.

Wednesday morning was scrapbooking with RamonaBusby and there will be some very lucky fathers outthere who will get a lovely card on Fathers Day madeespecially for them. In the Afternoon over 20 childrenwent to the Movies at our own Cinema and they reallyenjoyed the film which was played. Unfortunately“Horton Hears a Who” didn’t play due to technicaldifficulties but the substitute was just as good.

Thursday featured Gymnastics and then Kite Makingand no doubt you should have noticed Emma in theTimes Age helping some really puzzled children.

Another Successful School Holiday ProgrammeFriday was all systems go at Featherston Schoollearning to cook some yummy cup cakes and I amsure not many survived the journey home. In theafternoon we had a go at making stain glass windowswith black paper and cellophane and this activity wasrun by Michele Stokes who has recently re-joinedour Committee.

All in all we had a fantastic time and we would like tothank all that helped us run this programme andespecially the School Holiday Programmecommittee who always manages to come up withsomething different.
