Fashion Designer (Ages 8-12)Young girls graduate from playing dress up to designing their own fashions by using the same design principles used by professionals. Basic sketching techniques, coordinating colors for the best effect, mixing textures and patterns for scale and perception and applying cultural fashion history to each girl’s individual style and portfolio will be covered. Designs come to life with beautifully patterned papers, ribbons, sequins, jewels and oodles of other embellishments. Collaborative “design team” challenges make this hands-on, minds-on adventure into the world of design very exciting. No sewing is done in this class. Instruction provided by Fastforward Kids.

Art Starz: Canvas Kids (Ages 6+)Young artists will have a blast painting animals, still lifes and landscapes using a step-by-step method. Art Starz instructors will cover basic color theory and fun techniques that can be used to produce magnificent paintings every time. Your young artist will paint at least one large canvas and one mini canvas with an easel as well as various sizes in between. A $20 supply fee is payable to the instructor on the first day of class.

Art Starz: Studio Painting (Ages 6+)Calling all young painters! Grab a cup of water and a paintbrush and join Art Starz as we wander into the world of watercolors and acrylics. Young painters will practice a variety of watercolor techniques such as wet-into-wet and dropping “jewels.” Basic color theory will also be explored as they learn about blending and mixing colors using acrylics. Young painters will take home at least one large painting on canvas as well as a mini canvas with an easel. A $20 supply fee is payable to the instructor on the first day of class.



Art Starz: Studio Drawing (Ages 8+)First learn to see, then learn to draw. Young artists will learn tips and techniques from an Art Starz artist and how to draw like a pro! Students will have fun warming up with a variety of challenging exercises designed to help them identify value, proportions and composition. They will draw from still lifes and work with other resource materials, such as photos of wild animals and pets. Special techniques like drawing fur and animal’s eyes so that they look realistic will also be covered. Students will use a variety of dry media including charcoal, chalk pastel, high quality drawing pencils and colored pencils on paper. A $10 supply fee is payable to the instructor on the first day of class.



Art Starz: Cartoon Drawing (Ages 8+)Does your child have a knack for doodling? Experienced Art Starz instructors will guide young cartoonists in creating a variety of drawings as well as their own original characters. Students will produce a 3-panel comic strip and learn to incorporate word bubbles, inking and other elements of interest. Various hand-made animation devices such as flip books and an animation wheel will also be created. Learning continues with tricks of famous cartoonists, optical illusions and an explanation on how cartoon movies work. A $10 supply fee is payable to the instructor on the first day of class.

Music, Dance & DramaArt Starz: Let’s Go to the Movies! (Ages 6+)Kid’s movies are full of memorable roles from Mickey Mouse to Sheriff Woody and Olaf to Dory. These beloved characters will inspire young artists and get their creative juices flowing in this fun-filled class. With pencil and paintbrush in hand, students will create popular scenes and characters through acrylics on canvas, watercolors, pastels, cartooning and more! Instruction provided by Art Starz. A $20 supply fee is payable to the instructor on the first day of class.



Anime and Manga Workshop (Ages 6-12)In five, action-packed days students will learn to create dazzling illustrations filled with colorful characters and expressive personalities. Influenced by popular Japanese anime and manga themes your young artist won’t want to miss out! All supplies are included. Instruction provided by Young Rembrandts.



iPianoLab (Ages 5-13)What’s the coolest thing your child can do this summer? Learn piano or keyboard with iPianoLab! While most students start out learning drills or “baby songs,” iPianoLab students get to play songs they like right from the first lesson! One Republic, Spongebob, Taylor Swift, Super Mario Bros, Star Wars, even Bach and Beethoven are all within reach, right from the first class! This comprehensive approach teaches all the essential keyboard basics including note reading, counting and rhythms, chords and more! A child who likes practicing their songs is a child who will make rapid progress on the instrument. All supplies are included.

Acoustic & Electric Guitar for Youth, Beginning 1 (Ages 6-17)Does your child want to learn how to play the guitar? In this group class they will learn how to play the guitar the smart way. Music, Dance & Drama Move & Groove - Urban Art & Dance (Ages 5-10)Young dancers will move and groove as they explore self-expression through the arts. Classes start off with a fun and creative urban art lesson. Then we wipe our hands clean and get funky with an active breakdancing session. Our week long workshops are great for first time dancers and we keep lessons challenging for our more experienced students. Student artwork and dance moves will be shown off to family and friends at our end of program art show at Brick inside Blue Star, located in downtown San Antonio. Drama Kids International®: DKI Acting Academy (Ages 5-12)In this “High School Mystery” workshop young actors will polish their acting skills under the guidance of Drama Kids International® instructors, all while having fun solving a mystery. A monologue, television commercial, mini-script, open-ended dialogue and small group improvisation are only some of the fun activities throughout this dramatic week. At the end of the week young actors will take the stage to demonstrate their skills in a performance for family and friends. Walk the Runway - Modeling 101 (Ages 8-12)Would your child love the opportunity to walk the runway this summer? Texas Cheer presents an introduction to the world of modeling, including a walk down the runway in an end of class fashion show. Modeling topics will include the runway walk technique; poise, posing, and posture; runway attitude and flair; skin care and make up tutorials; commercial creative acting; a photo session with 2 to 3 outfits; and healthy eating and exercise tips. CULINARY ARTS Creative Cookie Decorating 101 (Ages 7-12)Want to combine your child’s love of art and sweets? Creative pastry designer Amy Roussin presents a fun cookie decorating class where your child will learn different decorating techniques and layering through the week. We’ll travel from season to season decorating a variety of holiday treats with a mystery holiday chosen by the class! Emojis will even make their appearance as we have fun celebrating the seasons. A supply fee of $25 is payable to the instructor on the first day of class and includes a take-home container, cookies, icing and decorating tools. Play-Well: Batman’s Master Mechanics with LEGO® (Ages 7-12)Young engineers will join forces with Play-Well TEKnologies as they defeat Gotham’s villains. Design and build Batman’s most advanced crime-fighting machines, infiltrate Arkham Asylum, build a Bat Cycle, fly your Batcopter and more! Together we can thwart the Joker’s plans to take over the city. Be the super-hero or super-heroine Gotham needs while engineering solutions through the use of STEM concepts!


Play-Well: Minecraft® Engineering Using LEGO® (Ages 5-7)Students will bring Minecraft® to life using tens of thousands of LEGO®! Engineer-designed projects such as a motorized Creeper, a portal to the Nether, a moving Minecart and more will be built with the guidance of an experienced Play-Well TEKnologies instructor. Whether your child is new to Minecraft® and LEGO®, or a seasoned veteran, they’ll be hooked on the endless creative possibilities.


Play-Well: Minecraft® Masters Engineering Using LEGO® (Ages 7-12)This project-based class, designed by Play-Well TEKnologies, combines our core engineering-themed programs based on the world of Minecraft®. Young engineers will explore real-world concepts in physics, engineering and architecture while building their favorite Minecraft® objects. Young engineers will build a walking Creeper, a terrifying Ghast, a motorized Minecart and more all out of LEGO®!


B3: Jurassic Jamboree - Dinosaur Dig! (Ages 4-8)Your little one will jump with excitement in this dinosaur exploration class with Bricks, Bots & Beakers! Junior paleontologists will learn all about dinosaurs, create fossils and coprolites, participate in a dinosaur dig and more. Class also includes dinosaur themed LEGO® building challenges and dinosaur crafts and games. Each child will receive a B3 (Bricks, Bots and Beakers) certificate upon completion. A supply fee of $10 is payable to the instructor the first day of class.



B3: Frozen STEAM (Ages 4-8)Bricks, Bots & Beakers presents this STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) class for younger students! Students will experiment with a variety of materials as they build and freeze to make scientific observations. They will also make a variety of art projects that teach scientific ideas. Concepts include: coding; molecular structure; freezing point; absorbing and dissolving liquids; states of matter and making frost/ice; chemistry and engineering; artistic design, mathematics and more! Each student will finish with a B3 (Bricks, Bots and Beakers) certificate upon completion. A supply fee of $10 is payable to the instructor the first day of class.




Recreation & sports Wheels, Wings & Motorized Things (Ages 5-7)This class offers students a safe, educationally enriching STEM Program experience that is fun and challenging using simple machines. The program focuses on the vital STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and challenges kids to think while having fun. With over 15 new games, projects and activities not found in stores, this innovative program provides opportunities for imagination to thrive in hands-on learning. Under the guidance of Fastforward Kids’ certified educators, your child will develop personal creativity, following instructions, eye-hand coordination and problem solving skills! They will use and develop critical thinking skills as they construct dinosaurs, rockets, castles, airplanes, forts, cars and much more!



Soccer - Go for the Goal (Ages 6-11)Some dream about goals... we make them. TX Youth Sports teaches fundamental drills and skills that will take your child’s soccer experience to the next level. Working in small groups and individually, students will learn essential drills to include: passing and receiving the ball; using speed and space effectively; scoring and more! Daily scrimmages will provide an opportunity to practice the developed skills while having a fun time. Class is held indoors and both boys and girls are encouraged to attend. Soccer balls will be provided for use during the week. Athletes should bring a personal water bottle to each class.



Basketball - Shoot, Score, Defend (Ages 7-12)Are your kids ready to have fun with basketball? Children will learn and develop the fundamental skills needed to play basketball at their personal best with TX Youth Sports. Skills will develop through specific and proven developmental drills, playing 3 on 3 and through 5 on 5 games. We will focus on having fun while learning defensive techniques, ball handling, passing, catching and attack moves. Shooting techniques, spacing on the floor and game situations will also be covered. Students should bring a basketball and personal water bottle to each class.

Volleyball - Bump, Set, Spike (Ages 7-12)Can they dig it? TX Youth Sports will cover drills, skills and proper footwork to help young athletes balance and move efficiently on the volleyball court. TECHNOLOGY & LEARNING Brainiac: Let’s Read! (Ages 4-7)This class is designed to build and support language through a love of reading and learning for beginning readers. As a research-based program, with highly individualized goals, your young reader will build a foundation of literacy that will support them throughout their academic career. Brainiac mentors will encourage your child to actively participate in reading, writing, oral language, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension - all while building their confidence. Using whole group, small group and one-on-one instruction, Brainiac meets the needs of varying ages and levels, all in one classroom, with an 8:1 student to teacher ratio. Technology & LearningBrain Camp (Ages 8-14)Activate your child’s brain in this cognitive enrichment program. Brain Camp exposes kids to fun activities that build core brain skills including memory, attention and logic. Certified brain teachers provide insight on how to plan and set goals, solve problems, harness the power of a great attitude and use cool memorization tricks. Extreme Dissection 2017 (Ages 7-12)Do you remember when you dissected a frog in school? This is way better! This week is filled with REAL specimen dissections and observations. Young scientists will be hands-deep in dissecting frogs, owl pellets, cow hearts and more under the supervision of former science teacher John MacLaren. Participants will walk away with a deeper imagination of what the world is like. The curiosity developed will be out of this world!



Explode into Science (Ages 7-12)Students will tingle with excitement, both figuratively and literally, as they learn to make chemicals and gasses change shapes, states and explode. This is no ordinary science class as every day holds new experiments that include dry ICE, ping pong explosions, tornado tubes, implosion cans, film canister rockets and much more. Together, under the instruction of former science teacher John MacLaren, we will create the largest, biggest and messiest explosion of them all! Parents are invited for a Friday finale showcase guided by the young scientists themselves to see first-hand demonstrations of what was learned during the week.



Jr. Doctor Training & Dissection (Ages 7-12)Does your child dream of becoming a doctor? Throughout the week, Jr. doctors will observe and perform real-life surgery on a brain, heart, eye and skin while learning about systems of the body including: skeletal, digestive, respiratory, circulatory, nervous and more! Jaws will drop when they experience what bones, muscles and fat look and feel like. Students will participate in a Q&A session with real doctors, take videos and pictures of all that they encounter and take home an information packet to continue learning after class! Instruction provided by John MacLaren.


Water Rockets & Marshmallow Blasters (Ages 7-12)Launch your child into a week of learning about Newton’s Laws of Motion, pressure, measurements and distance while having fun. Students will design, create and keep their own marshmallow blasters and spoon catapults, compete in distance contests and challenge each other in friendly marshmallow war games. Students will also explore various styles of water rockets to launch into the atmosphere. This week is sure to fly by with science fun under the instruction of former science teacher, John MacLaren.


Robotics Club USA: Star Wars® - Engineering Apprentice (Ages 8-14)Students will learn how to build basic mechanical systems and structures, solve problems and use engineering concepts in a competitive and cooperative learning environment. Young engineers will enter the galaxy as they build Star Wars® vehicles. Students will be presented with questions about engineering feasibility and creative design discussions are used to help develop an understanding of basic engineering principles. In addition, the students will examine each vehicle and discuss how one might recreate or reverse-engineer a scaled static model. Instruction provided by Robotics Club USA.

Mad Science: Rockin’ Rockets (Ages 6-12)Your child will launch their knowledge of flight as they build their own rockets! Young scientists will experiment with different kinds of propulsion systems as they use their new knowledge to blast off, track and recover different kinds of rockets. We’ll have a “rockin’” good time during this rocket week with Mad Science of Austin & San Antonio.


Mad Science: Science Explorations (Ages 6-12)Young scientists will discover space travel as they prep their “egg-stronaut” for flight. Students will problem solve ways to build a flying orbiter and design a crash test helmet to protect their “egg-celent” partner. With the help of Mad Science of Austin and San Antonio instructors, students will explore: how to use the sun’s rays to make a tasty treat, change the color of beads and turn a shadow into a picture; figure out the trick of tight ropes with C.G. Owl; send secret messages using chemical reactions and more!



Mad Science: Wings & Things (Ages 6-12)Your child’s imagination will take flight as they learn about Sir Isaac Newton’s laws of motion, the Wright brother’s contributions to aviation and prepare for aerospace adventures. Students will design, build and test fantastic flying creations including kites, planes, rockets, hovercrafts and more. Star secrets of the universe will also be explored with their own planisphere. Students will experiment with the laws of physics, gravity and motion during this amazing week of hands-on fun. Instruction provided by Mad Science of Austin & San Antonio.


Robotics Club USA: City - Engineering Apprentice (Ages 8-14)Does your child have an eye for design? How about city engineering? Young engineers will construct a variety of buildings typically found in the city and surrounding areas. Building and creative design discussions are used to develop an understanding of the function and purpose for different types of buildings. In addition, students will examine city structures and discuss how they might improve on a building or make them more functional. Instruction provided by Robotics Club USA.



Robotics Club USA: Structures – Engineering Journeyman (Ages 9-14)Young Jr. engineers will learn how to integrate and build basic Technic® systems that contain moving parts, gears, pulleys and other mechanical devices. Students will examine various models and discuss how the Technic® system differs from the standard LEGO® system and what mechanical advantages have been introduced. Instruction provided by Robotics Club USA.



Robotics Club USA: Gears - Engineering Journeyman (Ages 9-14)Robotics Club USA presents the LEGO® Technic® system and how it integrates gears and pulleys into mechanical devices and structures. Young engineers will learn all about gears and how they are used to alter power and speed, as well as convert directional energy in mechanical systems. Students will also examine various Technic® models and discuss how these gears have improved and converted mechanical advantage into usable actions, making work easier.

technology & learningBits, Bytes & Bots: 3D Video Game Making with Kodu (Ages 8-12)Has your child ever wanted to build their own racing game? Here’s their chance! Microsoft®’s Kodu is a visual programming language (similar to scratch) that is used to create video games. Students will learn the basics of 3D game design by creating multiple games in this class. Conditional formatting will be mastered by the time they build their final project… a serious racing game. When skill behind the wheel isn’t enough, students create power-ups to stun their opponents including ray guns, land mines, force fields and more! This course builds skills by challenging students to analyze a problem and structure their solution. Instruction provided by Bits, Bytes & Bots of San Antonio.

B3: World of Robots - Part 1 (Ages 4-8)WowWee® -MiP the Robot, programming with Cubelets® and fun with Hexbug® brings the robot world to life with Bricks, Bots and Beakers. Activities including tin can robots, “program a friend” and marshmallow bots will open student’s eyes to basic programming, circuitry and STEM skill development. Young minds will be sparked with curiosity and creativity through projects, games, crafts and robot snacks. Each child will receive a B3 (Bricks, Bots and Beakers) certificate upon completion. B3: World of Robots - Part 2 (Ages 4-8)Bricks, Bots and Beakers continues the robot fun with WeDo LEGO® robots, Colby the Code & Go™ Robot Mouse and Snap Circuits®. Students will learn programming, circuitry and STEM concepts through fun activities including robot masks, hovercrafts, juice box bots and more! GENERAL INFORMATION— Classes in this publication are for youth only. We ask that you adhere to the age requirements listed in the course description. The Community Education Program of NEISD is conducted for the benefit and enjoyment of community patrons. Classes are offered for people of all ages regardless of where they live. Classes offered are non-credit. Financial support for the program comes from class tuition. Every effort has been made to make this publication accurate as of the publication date; however, all policies, tuitions/fees, instructors and class content are subject to change at any time by appropriate action of instructors or administrators of this program. All classes require pre-registration. Early registration is encouraged to avoid class cancellations due to low enrollment. REFUND POLICY—We understand things happen from time to time that get in the way of you attending a course in which you enrolled and planned to attend. If this is your situation, please give us a call and we will issue a credit of the tuition paid that can be applied to any course you wish to take in the future. Request for refund must be made by calling Community Education at 407-0140 option 3. CANCELLATIONS—If we cancel your class, you will receive a full refund by check or credit on charge card. Registrants will be notified by e-mail or phone if class has been canceled. Refer to “Refund Policy” above if you wish to cancel your class.CONFIRMATION of registrations will not be sent. You will be contacted only if a class is canceled or is already full when your registration is received.RETURNED CHECKS—A fee will be charged for each returned check.SUPPLY/FOOD FEES —Some classes have a supply fee which is payable to the instructor at the first class. This fee is in addition to the class fee, which is paid to Community Education and is noted in the class description.POLICIES—North East Community Education reserves the right to change class instructors when necessary. North East Community Education also reserves the right to refuse enrollment to participants with a history of unacceptable behavior.INSTRUCTORS—We make every effort to offer courses on a wide variety of subjects and topics, and to ensure that instructors are knowledgeable in the subjects that they are instructing. The views, opinions, descriptions, beliefs or other language included in the course descriptions, or that may be presented during instruction on any subject in any given course, are entirely the instructor’s own, and do not necessarily reflect the views or judgments of either the North East Independent School District or the North East Community Education Department.
