CLIENT-EMPLOYEE PROFILE:HUMANITARIAN OF THE YEAR

Carol Ann Fisher

Carol Ann Fisher was chosen as Humanitarian of the Year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 18, 2016). Carol is a

young woman who spends her time in our work programs, in day services and in Adult Basic Education programs. Carol is a very competitive person and enjoys challenging others. She is also a kind and caring person who interacts well with all of her co-

workers no matter the level of disability. She works hard and she plays hard, too.

We congratulate Carol and thank her for her kindness to others. l

Dear Friends,

During the past few years I often thought about how to handle my eventual future retirement from Hodan

Community Services (HCS). As you know, HCS has been a major part of my life. In September, 2016 I will turn 66 and I will have worked at HCS for over 44 years (40 years as Executive Director). Last December I came to the decision that it was nearing time to step down as Executive Director and I wanted a smooth transition for Hodan Community

Services’ future. Fortunately, HCS has an excellent Deputy Director, Tom Schmit, who has superbly handled leadership duties in my absence (vacations, sicknesses, away meetings, etc.) for the past 4-1/2 years. Tom is eager to take on the future challenges of being Executive Director.

At the same time I realized that it would be very difficult for me to just stop working for Hodan Community Services all at once as it has been such an important part of my life. I also felt that I still had much to offer HCS. One primary duty of mine has always been to help write grants and raise funds for Hodan Community Services. I actually have come to enjoy these duties and I know how important these extra funding dollars are for our mission.

With all of this in mind, I offered and our Board of Directors approved (last December) the following plan:

Effective October 1, 2016, I will step down as Executive Director and become part time (three days/week) Director of Development (with grant writing and fundraising duties). Tom Schmit will be promoted to Executive Director. Chris Mitchell will be promoted to Deputy Director. Chris will continue to lead the Vocational Services department and, as Deputy Director, will lead Hodan Community Services in Tom Schmit’s absence.

As I am about to enter my last few months as Executive Director, I feel at peace with my future and that of Hodan Community Services. We will remain in good hands with Tom and Chris’ leadership and I can still help HCS to grow and prosper. My dad (who passed away last Thanksgiving Day at age 101) always said, “Do your best and let God do the rest”. We will all continue to live by these words as a new chapter of “doing our best” begins on October 1… an exciting new chapter of service for all of the special people who make Hodan Community Services so great!

STAFF MEMBER PROFILE:

Don Williams

Don Williams has been employed as a regu-

lar Bus Driver since 2004. He also drove for Hodan Community Services (HCS) for a short time in the 1970s and as a sub driver in other years. Don very safely trans-

ports his passengers each day to and from Hodan Community Services. He is a kind and caring person who loves and is loved by his passengers who, in his words, “get into my heart.”

Don was born in Dodgeville and lived in rural Dodgeville in his earliest years. He lived near Fayette and first attended Georgetown rural school. When his family moved to rural Mineral Point when he was 10, Don attended Sweet Clover School. He graduated from Mineral Point High School in 1951.

Don has farmed most of his life in rural Mineral Point, just picking up occasional part time jobs to supplement the farming. His farm has 80 acres of wooded pasture and 100 acres in CRP (Conservation Reserve Program). Don has great respect for nature and preserving all lands from pollution and water runoff.

While still owning his farmland, Don now lives in Mineral Point with his special friend, Sharon Phillips (who also works part time as a janitor at HCS). Don is proud of his 6 grown children (Donald, Scott, Karl, Mark, Michelle, and Elaine), 11 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Don loves anything to do with nature and wild-life. He also has a love for classic tractors and enjoys collecting military rifles. Don has owned and flown his Taylorcraft airplane for the past 24 years and he has flown around Wisconsin and into Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota. Don has shown his kind heart by giving a number of local people with disabilities their first airplane ride.

We thank Don for being such a dedicated and dependable worker and friend. He is a role model for kindness who has also “got into our hearts.” l

Wisconsin Innovation Kitchen (WINK) began as a dream. Now, almost 6 years after the ribbon cutting, WINK is fulfilling other dreams daily. These are dreams of farm-ers and food entrepreneurs of having their produce and products appear on store shelves. And these are dreams of 20 client-employees with disabilities who have valued jobs at WINK that pay above minimum wage. What is especially rewarding is that this is often the first com-munity job outside the walls of our Hodan Community Services building for many of these 20 workers. None of these dreams could have been fulfilled without the outstanding leadership of our Wisconsin Innovation Kitchen Director, Kent Genthe, and his excellent WINK staff of Ray Guenther, Scott Pierce, Seth Jones, and Summer Hamille.

Since its opening in 2010, Wisconsin Innovation Kitchen (WINK) has grown to become a national leader in small batch artisan food production, serving area farms and food entrepreneurs from around the region and around the country. Ideas have been converted into food prod-ucts, brands and companies. Good new jobs have been created in our area because of WINK.

One of our local favorites, Bob’s Bitchin’ BBQ, was one of our earliest clients. Bob started out small, selling his original sauce on weekends and evenings at local farm-ers’ markets. Soon new flavors were added and orders for Bob’s great products began to grow rapidly. Within a couple years, Bob was able to open his first Dodgeville restaurant, Bob’s Bitchin’ BBQ. Located in downtown Dodgeville on Iowa Street across from the courthouse, Bob’s restaurant soon began attracting visitors from all over the Midwest and a legend was born. All the while, behind the scenes, the staff at WINK continued to grow with Bob’s Bitchin BBQ, providing bottled sauces for sale at the restaurant and through Bob’s retail successes. Last year, Bob purchased his own building in downtown Dodgeville. Bob’s Bitchin’ BBQ consistently wins regional awards for best restaurant, best lunch and best dinner. Bob’s Bitchin’ BBQ is one of WINK’s oldest and most successful customers. We love supporting Bob and wish Bob’s Bitchin’ BBQ the very best in its continued growth!

Another early customer at WINK was Yumbutter. This organic peanut butter required special handling and

equipment that the staff at WINK was able to work with the Yumbutter team to put in place. As the Yumbutter brand grew, new flavors were added and sales rose. The team at WINK rose to the occasion by developing new techniques. Yumbutter was featured on the Today show and awarded by Martha Stewart for their innovations. Here’s what our friends at Yumbutter say: “Without the partnership of WINK, I can honestly say Yumbutter would not be where it is today.”

Another long-standing WINK customer is Coffee Chew . This exciting tobacco alternative was developed by John Evans in Wisconsin. John brought his ideas and pro-totypes to WINK in their early stages. He utilized the entrepreneur support systems we have in place to help him launch, and then he worked with our WINK staff to perfect the recipes and preparation steps. Today Coffee Chew is one of our leading products. Made from fresh ground coffee, honey, sugar and non-dairy creamer, this great nicotine-free product is helping people all over the country find alternatives to tobacco. Coffee Chew is shipping internationally including a recent shipment to Australia. We package under two labels, Baseball Chew and Cowboy Chew. Major League baseball teams are showing increased interest in Baseball Chew as a tobacco replacement product for its players. Great taste. Great results. Great WINK customer. Thanks Cowboy Coffee Chew!

Early experiments with retail partners also proved suc-cessful and have been growing. Willy Street Cooperative in Madison began buying ingredients prepared at WINK several years ago. This partnership has grown over the years to now include custom preparation and packaging of Willy Street branded organic frozen foods. The pack-aging was a huge hit and we look forward to another great year of growth with our friends at Willy Street.

Among the most exciting news of the past year is the addition of the automating cupping machine . This amaz-ing new production capacity is now in place thanks to a generous contribution from Edgerton Gear (located in Edgerton, Wisconsin). The owner of the company, Dave Hataj, heard an interview about WINK on Milwaukee Public Radio and began offering to help. And what help it has been! WINK now is producing single-serve products in cups at commercial volumes using local foods. First out of the gate are local applesauce cups. The automatic cupper has a capacity to fill up to 60 cups per minute. It can package not only applesauce, but a wide range of products to be served in individual containers. WINK is on the move!

Another partnership that emerged this past year was one with Feeding Wisconsin/Second Harvest . Feeding Wisconsin is a leading provider of foods to our state’s

Margaret Lauper filling bottles of Bob’s Bitchin’ BBQ sauce.

Damon West filling Coffee Chew cannisters.

food banks and pantries, distributing 38.9 million meals delivered to Wisconsin residents. WINK’s partnership with Feeding Wisconsin emerged through a grant provided by the Walmart Foundation to extend the life of foods donated to the Feeding Wisconsin/Second Harvest system. We worked with Feeding Wisconsin to design the application which resulted in a $50,000 project for WINK. The end result was a run of 76,000 applesauce cups, utilizing Wisconsin grown apples, that are now moving from WINK into the Feeding Wisconsin System. This is a great new opportunity for all involved.

Also new this year was the award of a Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin grant. WINK was recognized by the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) for its leadership in small batch food processing in Wisconsin. This grant is helping pay for marketing assistance to sell our shelf stable food products made with our locally grown farm produce. Barry Hottmann and Rick Terrien of Innovation Kitchens LLC are consulting on this project, with technical assistance from John Delikat of Food Production Outfitter LLC .

Tom Schraeder, Executive Director of Hodan Community Services calls Kent Genthe, Barry Hottmann, and John Delikat the “dream team for Wisconsin Innovation Kitchen’s future”. With Genthe (food operations), Hottmann (market-ing) and Delikat (food equipment engineering), WINK has the future-focused talent to continue it’s national recognition as a prototype for a very special food processing kitchen. New food products and new jobs for people with disabilities will continue to be created. And more dreams will continue to be fulfilled! l

Hodan Community Services began to provide hot lunches in our first building, the former St. Mary’s/

St. Paul’s School, in 1976. The school had a large kitchen which served its students for many years. We decided to utilize this kitchen to provide hot lunches and teach our client-employees useful skills for future working in the food industry. Our client-employees learned to help with meal preparation, serving, dishwashing, and kitchen/cafeteria cleanup.

Mary Cenite was our first Food Service Leader and she continued leading this program for over 25 years before and after our move to our present Fountain Street loca-tion. Our Food Service Leader today is Alicia Ray, who has been in charge of our hot lunch program since 2014. Her food skills are excellent and she has brought many new food offerings (and great desserts!) to our menu. Thank you Alicia!

Over the years we have served 60+ meals per day to our client-employees and staff (in 2015 we averaged 62 meals/day). Each person has a choice each day to bring

a lunch from home or eat the hot lunch offering in our cafeteria. A calendar sent home each month tells the daily menu offering so decisions for lunch can be made each day.

Since 1986 (thirty years), Hodan Community Services has had a contract with Iowa County Seniors United for Nutrition (SUN) for noon meal preparation for senior meal delivery. We currently have a contract for Mineral Point’s senior meal delivery. Our meals are cooked and placed in insulated carriers by 10:30 a.m. for SUN volun-teers to pick up and drive to the homes of seniors in the Mineral Point community. We average 10-12 SUN meals each day.

We are proud of our hot lunch program and especially our staff and client-employee workers. We are one of the few work centers in the state and nation that provides this full hot meal option each lunch period. It is one more way that Hodan Community Services provides unique service for our client-employees and our community. l
