CAMPANIA // Terre del Principe is the small winery owned by Peppe Mancini and Manuela Piancastelli. Beppe, who rediscovered the rare and ancient Pallagrello and Casavecchia grape varieties, decided to dedicate himself to viticulture after a career as a lawer. Manuela soon followed him, leaving her position as a journalist at Il Mattino newspaper after 20 years. That’s how Terre del Principe was born in 2003 in Castel Campagnano, in the province of Caserta, 30 kilometers from Naples. The estate consists of ten hectares of organically farmed vineyards, and produces around 20,000 bottles every year under the consultancy of Professor Luigi Moio. The available wines in the United States include:

Interview with Peppe Mancini, owner of Terre del Principe

Vias: Peppe, you are the rediscoverer of Pallagrello Bianco, Pallagrello Nero and Casavecchia, three ancient native grape varieties from Campania. How did this rediscovery occur?

Peppe Mancini: Almost all of the important encounters of life happen by chance, as it was for me with these grapes. I was looking for my grandfather’s favorite wines, who was a landowner in Castel di Sasso, near Caserta. The village peasants, who remembered him thirty years after his death, told me about these old grapes and wines, which were unknown to me at the time: Pallagrello and Casavecchia. I was then doing a different job, I was a lawyer, and wine was only a passion. At the beginning I wasn’t thinking of creating a company. But these grapes immediately fascinated me, especially after I was able

to find 150 year-old vines, real natural monuments.

We now know that these grapes had no longer existed in the wine scenario of Campania. Is this true?

Very true, they were not even included in the National Catalog of Wine Grapes. For five years, after every harvest, I brought three quintals of grapes per type to the University of Naples, to allow them to be studied by the Ministry. Genetic tests, ampelographic studies and micro- vinification were performed. At that time, I also discovered that Pallagrello had a great history; it had been part of “Vigna del Ventaglio,” the beloved vineyard of King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, and the Pallagrello wines, both white and red, were often served at royal meals together with French wines. This important page of our history was unfortunately forgotten with the Unification of Italy in 1860, when the small production of these wines remained

in the shadows .

What were the years of experimentation?

The early 1990s. I created a small company that allowed me to perform the first bottled tests, but at the time I could not even declare the grape variety on the label. It was “outlawed,” since they were not yet included in the National Catalog.

Those must have been important years...

Very much, especially because that is when I met Luigi Moio, who then directed the experimentation at the University of Naples. He immediately believed in these grapes and contributed to the rebirth of Pallagrello and Casavecchia in an extraordinary way. And then, thanks to an interview I gave after producing my first few bottles, I met Manuela Piancastelli, a journalist who later became my wife. Together we were, and still are, a perfect team. I gave my heart to these grapes, Luigi Moio gave the intelligence, and Manuela, the words.

And in 2003 Terre del Principe was born. What was the winemaking project?

I only needed the company to carry on my passion. I wanted to try to make great wines from unknown grapes closely related

to this unknown part of Campania which is beautiful, clean, and rich in complexity and unspoiled territories.

What are the main characteristics of Pallagrello and Casavecchia grapes?

Pallagrello Bianco is a wine of great structure, fascinating in its balance between flavor, acidity and softness. It is perhaps one of the most complex whites from Italy. Our Sèrole knows how to face the challenge of time very well, and this is another virtue. Pallagrello Nero is an elegant wine, with

silky tannins, aromas of spices and berries. Our Ambruco has vigor but also a lot of grace, it is a wine that matures without losing its freshness and character. The Casavecchia grape, on the other hand, is very particular since the bunch is large and sparse. Our Centomoggia is more rustic than the Pallagrello Nero but very recognizable in its aromas of red fruits, with slightly sharper tannins, that however, can refine very well over time.

Tell us something about Piancastelli, a blend of Pallagrello and Casavecchia, and your most important red wine.

It is a wine that Manuela strongly wanted (not by chance, it is named after her). She loves softer and more fragrant wines. Indeed, when we met she already owned a vineyard planted with these two red varieties. We therefore decided to make this blend, naming it Piancastelli, which we wanted to be the small masterpiece of Manuela. The wine is the result of three different harvests: one for Casavecchia in September, the second for Pallagrello Nero in October, and a third for a part of Pallagrello Nero that we leave to overripen until November. Thanks to this vinification process Piancastelli is able to show the elegance of Pallagrello Nero, the intriguing perfume of Casavecchia and the smoothness coming from the overripened grapes. Another peculiarity of Piancastelli is

the label: each year it is different, created by various artists. The 2013 vintage was drawn by the Italian-Czechoslovakian artist Mojmir Jezek and the 2014 by Ginny Sykes, a talented artist from Chicago.

What is your average yearly production?

For about ten years we have fluctuated between 50-60 thousand bottles, but recently, we decided to decrease production. I know it’s a choice that goes against the tide, in a world where everyone wants to continue growing. But I believe in “happy degrowth;” I prefer to follow the seasons of life, and having just reached 70 years, I want to focus only on the best expressions of these grapes. We also left the large cellar we had from 2003 to 2016 to move to a smaller but more fascinating space: a very old cooper’s shop, a structure in the center of Castel Campagnano village where we vinify our wines and let them age in a cave 15 meters below the ground.

Until a few years ago Pallagrello and Casavecchia grapes were unknown. How did you communicate the peculiarities of these wines? And how important is communication for Terre del Principe?

At the beginning it was easy, because 15-20 years ago there was great focus on the rediscovery of indigenous grapes. We did not have to make such a great effort, journalists sought us out to talk about our wines. We had a great mentor, Luigi Veronelli, who was one of the first to believe in us. Then came the prizes, such as Gambero Rosso’s Tre Bicchieri several times, and many other awards, that helped

us to get some exposure. Also, Manuela was a journalist and for her, communication is a natural part of life. Today, however, we are questioning how wine communication has changed. Social media has overtaken the traditional models and so we took a year off thinking about new forms of communication: in 2018 we didn’t participate in any Italian guides, and no Vinitaly either. Just a lot of contemplation.

How did you meet Vias?

About ten years ago, a friend producer introduced us Fabrizio Pedrolli, who is an incredible talent scout. He immediately fell in love with our wines and above all we realized that our philosophies coincided. Vias was looking for small producers of high quality and we were looking for an importer able to understand our differences. Vias has a fantastic portfolio of exciting and unique wines, we are very proud to be part of this important family!

Finally, with which dishes of the Campanian cuisine would you pair Le Sèrole and Piancastelli? Le Sèrole is a rich and fragrant wine, perfect with a seafood risotto or with a fragrant pasta with anchovies and fennel. The Piancastelli is powerful and soothing, I see it pairing well with pasta with eggplant, grilled lamb, or with aged cheeses like our Parmesan or Provolone del Monaco. •
