Editors letter... What a start to

the year! As if it‟s not hard enough to

motivate yourself at the beginning of

January with the end of the Christmas

holidays, the excess pounds and a hefty visa

bill! I have to admit, it was lovely at first and the

hope we have had our lot for 2010 so we can all

get back to normal.

February brings both love ‗valentines day‘ and

more holidays! Perfect Harmony have some lovely

gift ideas for that special someone and both

Cusworth Hall and Yorkshire Wildlife Park will be

open throughout the half term period to help

occupy the children.

St Mary‘s Church Hall is now open for business so

if you would like to arrange to book the hall, please

contact Betty Brockman, numbers can be found on

what‘s on page.

March issue deadline is 16th February 2010

Is it just me or is the sight of litter a bug-bear to many other people

too? I am sure that to most, the answer's a resounding 'Yes.' Driving

and walking each day as I do throughout Sprotbrough, I never fail to

be disgusted at the sight of litter in our streets and scenic areas. More

recently, with the further addition of takeaway food rubbish scattering

the roadside, the journey along Sprotbrough falls onto Mill Lane has

become an eye sore. Plastic bottles, beer cans, takeaway trays and

crisp papers adorn the verges during this once pleasant drive.

It's not just confined to that area though. The KFC car park suffers the same

degradation, as does the skate park, the trans pennine trail and so many of our

streets in Sprotbrough. I regularly see the Council cleaners tidying the shopping area

near St Mary's church but no sooner is it cleared away than more quickly appears!

I wonder about the people who so blatantly discard their litter. Have they no regard

for the community whether they live in Sprotbrough or not? I wonder how they'd

feel if rubbish was dropped in their gardens or outside their houses and what they'd

have to say if the Council didn't bother to clear it but left it to pile up?

I find it hard to believe that people who enjoy the serenity and beauty of Sprotbrough actually want to ruin it

with the eye sore of litter. And with all the bins provided in the area, there really is no need.

I remember several years ago, doing a presentation about litter at a comprehensive school in Doncaster. When

asked why they dropped litter, one of the teenagers casually told me that 'it wasn't cool to put litter in the

bin!' It's not just teenagers though - it's people of all ages!

Call me old fashioned but I remember all these years on, my parents instilling in me the need not to drop

litter. No, actually, they didn't explain why not to - they just told me not to! I recall my coat pockets bulging

with sweets wrappers which were emptied once I'd got home.

I intend in the weeks and months to come, to carry out some litter presentations in the local schools, in the

hope that we can educate our young people into disposing of their litter safely and wisely, thereby keeping the

streets and our area a tidier place to live. I ask that parents and grand-parents play their part in teaching

their children and grand-kids not to drop litter. If told, children are often quick to learn and once aware, don't

need to be told too many times. It's such a small thing to ask but it's outcome could have such great benefits for

the community. A tidier and more pleasant area for us all to live in! And knowing children, they're often quick

to correct adults who they see not conforming!

Dog waste too, is a problem, not only on the footpaths but on the grassed areas as well. It's easily picked up in a

plastic bag and binned when you get home. It's so simple and there's really no excuse for not doing so! As with

litter, it's an offence to not pick it up but more to the point, it's inconsiderate to leave it for someone else to

trample in!

I know many community minded residents and groups who take time out to pick up discarded litter for the

benefit of us all. I applaud their community spirit! We're not responsible for the actions of others however,

we can all play our part. Between us, we can make a difference!

Q. I‟ve never had a dog before so would like some advice on what I

should be doing to make sure my new puppy is healthy and happy

during its first few months?

A. I‘m glad to hear you‘re taking the health and wellbeing of your new puppy seriously. Having a new

pet is an exciting experience but it‘s important to remember that any young animal is especially vulnerable

and you should be aware of essential health and overall checks that need to be carried out during its early

life.

We offer a package at the practice called the ‗Best Start in Life‘ which covers

everything you will need to ensure your puppy (or kitten) is fully prepared for its

future life. For £75, the package includes:

Microchip

Primary vaccination course (two injections)

Flea and worm treatment

Bag of Royal Canin food

10% off neutering

This covers the most important aspects of a new

puppy (or kitten‘s) life but please ask in the practice

for more details about how the Best Start in Life

package can benefit your pet.

Rebecca Aldren, practice partner at

Vets4Pets in Doncaster.

Over the next few months,

Rebecca will be answering your

pet related questions in The

Arrow. If you have a question

you would like answered, please

“Making the right choice” Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most important

decisions you will ever make as a parent. Here at Sycamore Hall we

recognise that school should not only be a place of education, but a happy, secure world where childhood

memories are made, and cherished. From the weekly spelling tests, double maths and language lessons, to

the May Day Celebrations and unique Christmas pantomime, we will ensure that your child not only

learns, but has fun and enjoyment along the way.

Our small class sizes ensure that your child is given a high degree of individual attention and is nurtured to

ensure their full potential is reached. We pride ourselves on developing a positive attitude towards

academic work, promoting concentration, self-discipline and a sense of achievement. The school has a

happy and hardworking atmosphere, and upholds traditional values such as good manners and courtesy for

others. Our school welcomes children with special needs and values all its pupils equally.

Sycamore Hall offers you an affordable independent education with moderate fees that you will find

surprising. Fees may be paid termly, monthly or weekly with generous discounts available for siblings.

Despite the fact that there has been little to report over the past couple of months or so, this doesn‘t mean that nothing has been happening. Our team of conservation volunteers has been hard

at work in the nature reserve and the committees of the Strategic Partnership and Community Group have been busy formulating plans and preparing applications for grants.

You will know already about SHARP, the Sprotbrough Heritage and Access Restoration Project,

which includes a fish pass at Sprotborough Falls and progress, though slow, is being made with this. A new project, however, is now being prepared for submission to ‗Access to Nature‘, which we are

calling ‗Discovering Doncaster‘s Don Gorge‘

‗Access to Nature‘ aims to encourage more people to enjoy the outdoors, particularly those who

face social exclusion or those that currently have little or no contact with the natural environment - perhaps because they lack the confidence to get out and enjoy natural places or have few

opportunities to do so. By 2014, it is hoped that 1.7 million people - in urban, rural and coastal communities across England - will have benefited from this grant programme by giving them

improved opportunities to experience and enjoy the natural environment and providing more opportunities to gain new skills . It is funded by £25 million from the Big Lottery Fund‘s ‗Changing

Spaces‘ programme and by Natural England.

Our project‘s aim is to share the hidden gem of Doncaster‘s Don Gorge with a greater number and diversity of people, enabling participation, learning and involvement in the rich natural and industrial

heritage of the area. At present, there are several barriers to this aim, such as the lack of a base and toilets for volunteers, suitable parking, public transport and site information, so it hoped that our

application will enable us to provide at least some of these.

The projects primary focus will be the development of a permanently moored visitor centre/

classroom in Lower Sprotbrough, in a converted British Waterways Heritage boat or barge. A project officer will be appointed to manage the centre, engage with the community and wider public,

along with overseeing the production of leaflets, trails and interpretation.

We are always eager to have feedback regarding our proposals and this is your chance. So, don‘t be shy, please get in touch and let us know what you think.

Dear Michelle, I would like to nominate our Minister's wife, Patience Okai-Sam. The

family is originally from Ghana but they've recently moved from Bradford to Sprotbrough, which is quite a culture shock in itself, and even through this really cold weather she has managed to laugh and joke! With a daughter at University and other family

members still in Ghana, she works very hard/long hours in a Nursing Home in Mexborough and still attends as many Church functions as her shifts allow. Despite all of this, Patience always has the biggest and warmest smile on her

face for everyone. Susan Kirvan

Redundancy Brings New

Challenge for Local Roofing

Contractor

After gaining 20 years experience with a Doncaster based roofing company, Eliot Grant from Old Cantley, faced

the devastating news of redundancy as his employer succumbed to the recession. There have been many

stories similar to this throughout the last year and Eliot was determined to see this as an opportunity.

Eliot decided it was time for him to run his own business, ―I just saw this situation as an opportunity. Your own business is something

you dream of, but sometimes you just don't have the guts to go for it‖ says Eliot.

Eliot contacted Chris Adams from Success Doncaster, he helped Eliot write a business plan and apply for a business grant. ―Chris

was a great help and pointed me in the right direction‖.

Within 2 months EPG Roofing was born, offering the public the best roofing services locally.

Business started on 1st January 2010 and Eliot is already receiving a steady amount of

enquiries, thanks to the Arrow magazines.

Eliot specialises in all roofing requirements

and is also skilled in all parts of the building trade. If you would like Eliot to give you a quote for some work call him on 07850 976791.

If you need any help with your business, developing new skills or finding a job, contact

Success Doncaster on 01302 734554.

And if you don‘t like heels, watch

out for the new lower heels

coming through... So Christmas has been and gone, your sharp

shouldered jacket is at the dry cleaners, you

have worn your little black dress out and are so

glad that you bought your over the knee boots to

take you through the cold and rainy months of our

English weather. So now we are all thinking about

what we may be wearing next season and

particularly when the long hot summer days come

along, which at the moment we can only dream

about.

Well - you will be happy to know that romance is

well and truly in order for Spring Summer 2010

and this mood was evident with collections seen

across the board. Key elements of this came

through the clever use of fabric, in particular

lightweight and sheer fabrics and chiffon (see image

of Chloe dress). Beautiful cuts, knotted fabric and

layers of ruffles carry through to next season.

Once again, nude tones feature strongly with ice

cream shades adding to the softness of next season

- allowing more of an emphasis on de-constructed

cuts and drapes as a statement (rather than bold

colour seen Autumn/Winter 09). Touches of lace

and underwear contribute to the romantic look

with underwear worn as outerwear for the more

daring.

Prints are also strong, futuristic led but more

subtle than last season with some vintage prints

coming through (Roberto Cavalli).

And if you invested in sparkle this Autumn winter

don't despair its staying with us right through to

summer!!!! Wear as much sparkle or as little as

you please, dress your beaded dress down with a

pair of flat sandals and a straw hat or just show a

little glitz around your neck or on your handbag.

On that note Party dresses are a big trend to be

worn day or night with our attention moving from

the shoulders to the hips creating womanly curves.

Jumpsuits are staying too, try and get your hands

on a strapless one or one shouldered numbers, the

eighties vibe will stay with us.

White is always in for Summer, it was showcased

tailored, bleached, masculine, feminine, ruffles,

sheer. Yellow also made its debut in the Louis

Vuitton, Stella McCartney and Lacoste shows. If

you want colour think check and pinstripe instead .

Silver and statement jewellery is my prediction for

Summer, and worn with white will lead you into

the next season quite nicely.

Nails, Nails & More Nails...

February’s Beauty Quote Do I love you because you're beautiful,

Or are you beautiful because I love you?

~Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, Cinderella

Dear Reader, How are you doing with your New Year Resolutions? Still exercising for an hour 4

times a week and just eating salad and fruit? I am doing quite well so far - I couldn‘t

make the Christmas Panto or a day at Centre Parcs because of the weather, but I

have finally finished the fourth Stephanie Meyer book and I had a wonderful back

massage at the salon – fantastic to ease muscular aches and pains and to fulfil my

‗me time‘ quota for this week. It was wonderful!

So... love is in the air this month with

„Valentine‟s Day‟ on February 14th

Why not treat your loved one to a gift

voucher for a massage treatment at Perfect

Harmony? There are: Swedish Massages,

Aromatherapy, Hot Stone, Thai, Indian

Head, Reflexology. With so many

treatments to choose from, a gift voucher

provides the perfect answer!

This months Arrow/Perfect Harmony gift

voucher is going to a lovely lady who lives

on Sprotbrough Rd, who has a huge heart, a

bubbly personality and does an awful lot of

'giving' and not enough 'taking'. Hopefully,

this voucher will give her some 'me time'!

If you know of someone who you think

deserves a gift voucher, maybe to cheer

them up or as a celebration of what they

have achieved or just because they are a

‗special‘ person, please forward his/her

details to the salon and leave the rest to

me. Don’t forget our ‘10 Years Younger 2010’ promotion. Fancy knocking back the years? Then

get in touch and once again, leave the

rest to me!

Beauty Tip Of The Month

A home manicure…. First add some sugar to a

hand wash and create lather with a little water.

Rub the hands vigorously to remove all the dead

skin cells. Rinse well with water and dry. Apply a

small amount of olive oil around the cuticles and

push them back gently. Apply hand cream liberally

over the hands and wrap in cling film to create

the heat that will allow penetration of the

nutrients. After ten minutes remove and massage

the remaining cream into the skin. Use nail polish

remover to remove any oily residue off the nail

plate and apply a thin layer of base coat, two

coats of a vivacious valentine colour, such as vivid

red or a bright pink, and complete with a top

coat. Next comes the difficult bi!. Wait patiently

for the polish to dry and - hey presto! Nails

perfect for any romantic Valentine celebration.

If the „diy‟ manicure is too difficult for you to contemplate, or if you just

fancy a treat, we at Perfect Harmony will gladly make your nails look

perfect. You could have a manicure or, more extravagantly, choose Bio

Sculpture Gel nail colour over your natural nail, or beautiful talons with

Ez Flow Acrylic Nail Extensions, or, even better... the latest Minx Nails

- the fashion of the celebrities!

How Safe is Your Home?

This is the question a recently established Sprotbrough based business,

Doncaster Composite Doors, is asking the public. Beating the Burglar is an

ongoing battle and householders need to guard and be aware of the latest

criminal activity/trend sweeping the country.

There are many homes in Doncaster that are fitted with a eurocylinder lock

which cost as little as 37p. It has been proven that these locks can be easily

broken by burglars.

Doncaster Composite

Doors offer to

replace these locks

with their new anti

bump locks which

provide the highest

levels of security.

Business owner, Jason

Targett said ―It‘s

frighteningly simple to

break into many

homes, in seconds!

We recommend you

have your locks

checked and replaced

where necessary‖.

Wednesday mornings from the 24th

February on our school premises,

supported by staff from the Children’s

Centre and our Parent Support Advisor.

Doncaster Advanced Motorists WHEN TEENAGERS TAKE TO THE WHEEL

Dear Readers, How we train our new drivers is under scrutiny this month – because the Government is still rightly

concerned about the number of young driver deaths on our roads.

What can a parent do when the time comes for their teenager to take to the road and learn to drive? The

short answer is ―pay for it‖ – as there is no substitute for proper professional tuition.

But the hands-on parent who wants to help their youngster with practice at the wheel can help make the

process less daunting, and perhaps reduce the need for quite so many lessons, before the dreaded L-test.

IAM experts argue that drivers who practice with supervision in addition to their lessons with an

Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) are more rounded at the end of the process and increase the chances

of first time test success.

But driving lessons are not getting any cheaper (if only because of the rising cost of petrol the instructor

needs).

If you want to help your youngster learn to drive, you need to go back to driving school yourself. Be

prepared to sit in the back when your youngster has their first driving lessons – but say nothing. Just take

it all in.

That way you can see and hear for yourself what the

professional instructor is advising, and make sure that

you reinforce those messages when you are helping

on practice drives with your youngster.

You have to also realise that your driving style may

be an effective one for you as an experienced driver,

but not necessarily a direct fit with the syllabus that

the ADI will be working to preparing your youngster

for the test. The Driving Standards Agency (DSA)

also publishes the curriculum on their website –

another very useful resource for parents.

Please remember too that not every family car is

suitable for practicing in, of course: a larger vehicle

that has an automatic transmission is of limited use if

you know that your youngster will eventually do

their test in a manual Micra, for example.

If you are interested in further information regarding

the courses that we offer, you‘ll be able to find this

information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists

The Family Table

February can be a very quiet month, after all the festivities of December and January. It seems ages ago… Let‘s all open our hearts to welcome the thoughts of Spring, which is just around the

corner. Go out into the countryside to see the snowdrops, the sight of them lifts our spirits, they are so small and wonderfully made. Come on out into the fresh air and praise God for His wonders of creation (hopefully as this comes through your letterbox, the

snow of January will have melted). Then bring your friends home for a cup of soup or coffee to warm up.

Have you shared your TABLE with anyone since the New Year? If not at your own table, then gather a few friends together and have a cheap and cheerful 2 for the price of one meal at a pub or café. We don‘t have to spend a fortune, it‘s the fellowship which helps us all to feel good. I wrote last month that God doesn‘t want us to be alone. But! we do

have to make the effort, not only to come to His Table to share His love and guidance, but also to share with others.

Some of us, including myself have been recently bereaved. We‘ll miss sharing the tables and the presence of our loved ones. However, our memories can never be taken from us. Jesus said, ‗let not our hearts be troubled‘, so we must celebrate their lives and

remember all the wonderful times together. When we believe in Jesus, death as we know it will only be for a little while, because we

know that we will share eternity with HIM. Remember we are not alone, God‘s blessings are passed from heart to heart. So let‘s

rattle those tea cups and get together soon. Our invitations are always open, like the doors of our hearts, so come and join us at

all our events.

We‘re having a Sunday Lunch at the Newton

Inn on February 7th at 12.30 pm, it‘s open to everyone who enjoys good food and good company, Fun Day families, Tuesday

Clubbers, Coffee Morning Chatterboxes, the Cell Group gatherers and Sunday Morning congregation are all included.

Come and join us, there‘s always a warm welcome round our Family Table.

See you there.
