Editors Letter.... Heavy Snow fell in the Isle, lasting

nearly a month. Did you know

England is experiencing its worst

winter for almost 15 years? Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed the weather,

I hope everyone gave others a helping hand if needed. Whilst the snow can be fun, it can also be a terrible burden for

others, especially the elderly. January always seems to be a gloomy month, the excitement of Christmas and New Year gone. We all need cheering

up, lets look forward to brighter months ahead with Spring just round the corner.

Of course there is Valentines Day and Mothers Day, browse through the Arrow

there of plenty of gift ideas; flowers from Jackie's on the High Street, a

professional portrait from Steve Oatway, vouchers from the Beauty Salons or even

a tattoo for your loved. The choice is yours, and don't forget to shop in your

area and support your local businesses. Keep your articles coming in and if any

business is interested in advertising, prices start from as little as £20 per

month. Also don't forget to check out our website:

Due to the very bad weather at the

beginning of January we had to cancel our monthly

meeting. We were due to have Allan Rowsell and

luckily we have been able to rearrange this for

March. The March meeting of the Isle of Axholme

group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust will take

place on Thursday March 4th when Allan will be

taking us around parts of south west USA. He and

his wife spent several weeks visiting this area and

he will be entertaining us with some wonderful

photographs of the many interesting buildings,

people and landscapes they came across. Allan is

chairman of the local camera club so the photo-

graphs, combined with lots of information about

the area and its people, will give us a great evening.

Do come along and join us, our meetings are open

to anyone; you don’t have to be a Trust member.

We meet on the first Thursday of the month from

October to May at the new hall at the rear of

Haxey Methodist Chapel on Low Street starting at

7.30pm. There is a small admission charge of £1

and there is a raffle and refreshments. Bird food is

always on sale at the meetings as well as at Geoff’s

house in Belton. For further information about the

local Trust group and their meetings please contact

Geoff or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051. We look

forward to welcoming all regular members and

new visitors. Crowle community Hall are hold-

ing a concert on 28th February tick-

ets £12.00, show starts at 7.30pm. country and

Current priorities that the

Neighbourhood Team are

concentrating on in the

North Ward area are:- Church Street, Crowle Anti-social be-

haviour incidents.

Update = The number of calls for ser-

vice in the Church street area have

reduced but nuisance incidents are still

occurring involving unknown young

people.

Manor Park/Godnow Road, Crowle

Anti-social behaviour surrounding vehi-

cle use. Concerned about vehicle nuisance/behaviour of young driver gathering at various locations in

Crowle. The main area being Windsor Park playing fields.

Update = The Neighbourhood Team have been concentrating on this area with regular high vis patrols.

Situation will be monitored and any offences committed will be dealt with in a positive manner.

George Avenue/Station Road Keadby Street request from the Parish Council and North Lincolnshire

Housing asking that the parking situations at these locations be monitored. Concerns for George Avenue

were re access of emergency services vehicles should they need to attend. On Station Road parking is-

sues revolve around the parking by parents around the school and concerns re safety of children in that

area.

Update = High vis patrols have been conducted in the area and the situation is being monitored.

During the month of December 2009 a search of premises within the Crowle area revealed a cannabis

factory, which has now been destroyed. Enquiries are still on-going regarding those involved.

Also at this time please be careful when out and about in your vehicle due to the recent severe weather

conditions. Allow yourself plenty of time to get to your destination and drive to the road conditions and

your capabilities. Better to get where you are going then not at all.

Please be advised that there has been a number of house burglaries within the Isle of Axholme during

recent weeks. So remember to secure your property correctly at all times and report any suspicious

persons/vehicles or incidents to the police as soon as possible.

Working with Pc Graham Godley are your Police Community Support Officers Paul Fearon and Wendy

Frear who regularly patrols the North Ward area of the Isle and will be happy to discuss any community

issues with you. Please feel free to stop and speak with them or alternatively contact either of us via 0845

60 60 222 or by e-mail graham.godley, paul.fearon or wendy.frear @humberside.pnn.police.uk.

The police station at Epworth provides a front counter service on Mondays and Thursdays, between 9am

and 3pm. There is also a Police Surgery held on the first Monday of each month at the Crowle Hub High

Street Crowle between 2.00pm and 3.00pm. The next two surgeries are on Monday 1st February 2010

and Monday 1st March 2010.

The date and location for the next Neighbourhood Action Team Meeting will be held at Keadby School on

Tuesday 16th March 2010.

The Isle of Axholme

Where You Live Your Local History Adapted by Anthony Catherall

THE ROMANS The Romans under Emperor Claudius invaded Britain in 43 A.D. His armies very swiftly moved north so that by 47 A.D. they had captured most of the land southeast of a Severn-Trent frontier. At Lincoln a legionary fortress was built. Ermine Street and Fosse Way Roman roads meet at Lincoln. When the captured areas had been consolidated the Romans looked north again. In 71 A.D. they struck across the Humber at Brough and across the Trent at Littleborough. Their attack was hampered by the marshy conditions around the Isle of Axholme and further north in the Vale of York. Keeping to the firmer ground the Romans skirted the Isle of Axholme. They set up a garrison town at Danum (Doncaster). They marched north and between 71 and 74 A.D. they set up a legionary fortress at York. Prior to this in 51 A.D. a Roman outpost was set up near Doncaster (probably near Rossington Bridge) in Brigantian territory. At this time the Brigantes and Romans lived in relative peaceful co-existence. Some history books by (Stonehouse & Fletcher) mention the story of the attacks made by the Britons from the forest covered Isle of Axholme on the Romans en-route from and to Doncaster. Eventually the Romans became annoyed at these attacks and apparently sent an army to deal with the attackers. A battle was fought near Austerfield possibly with the famous Roman General Ostorius in charge. The Romans were the visitors and apparently set fire to the forest thus destroying the Britons refuge. Evidence to support this story includes the finding of remains such as parts of swords, heads of battle-axes and

a statue of a Roman soldier in oak. One Bronze Roman Coin has been found in 1969 at Epworth and is now in Scunthorpe Museum. It has been dated A.D. 350-353 in the reign of Magnentius. A Thought for Lent

Wednesday 17th February is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Lent is a period of time

preparing for two important events, namely the death of Jesus on Good Friday and His resurrection

on Easter Day.

Traditionally – or to lose weight in preparation for the beach in the summer holiday – people ‘give

up’ things in Lent. The list can be endless, but may include cakes, biscuits, sweets, crisps, wine and

all things naughty but nice.

There is a lot to commend such self discipline. But how about saving the money you don’t spend on

all these items above and giving it away at Easter to a favourite charity or to the poor people of

Haiti. A jam jar on the kitchen table works well, and allows everyone in the family to contribute.

Or why not ‘give up’ a favourite TV programme once a week and take up reading the story of Jesus

in the Bible, or praying or simply sitting still, listening for the still small voice of calm – the voice of

God Himself.

You may have more creative ideas yourself as to how to prepare for Easter. Lent begins with a

Communion Service in St Oswald’s Church Crowle at 7.30pm on Ash Wednesday. I wish you a

Holy Lent.

on A161, Railway Cut and the Ceontaphs at Crowle & Ealand. We would like to thank all of you for

your continued support and hard work.

Over the last 12 months we have also continued to help and support local community organisations

these have included the purchase of tables for Crowle Playing Field Association, musical instruments
