enjamin Bratt calls him “My BrownBro.” He also referred to him as the“Tom Cruise of the Philippines”.Ishmael Bernal once pointed out

the then young actor to Marilou Diaz-Abayaand said, “Watch out for that guy.” The na-tion has since watched him both on TV andin the movies. Now, the whole world has thechance to watch him too.

Nothing was ever given to Cesar Montanoon a silver platter. Growing up in Sta. Ana, theyoung Cesar grew up watching Tagalog moviesof Vic Silayan and Dolphy. Little did he knowthat decades later he himself would end up onthe silver screen. He finished engineering at theLyceum. But it was in 1984, his senior year, whenthe acting bug bit him. He soon found himselfin different acting workshops.

Cesar Montano caught the public eye withhis early movies. He played a native statuewhich came to life to fulfill the innermost de-

sires of Rita Avila in “Machete”. From therehe has played a wide array of roles any actorwould be envious of. He has also starred op-posite almost all the country’s top female ac-tresses. He has been a “Warfreak”, a“Sanggano”, a “Hostage”, a “Kadre” and an“Utol”. He was in the Antipolo and the LipaMassacre. He gave reel life to Governor ChavitSingson. All proving that he is a bankable ac-tion star who does his own stunts. He evenhas the scars for each movie to prove it. Healso dabbled in comedy and television and hadviewers laughing in their seats. He even triedhis hand at directing. Each step he took wassuccessful, he won accolades from theater-goers and his peers along the way.

Cesar Montano soon became a multi-award winning actor for his roles in “Jose Rizal,”“Muro-Ami”, “Bagong Buwan” and others.According to Abaya, Cesar was a naturalchoice for the lead role in the movie recount-

hi l ippine cinema’s CesarMontano is currently appearing in“The Great Raid” with Benjamin

Bratt, James Franco, Connie Nielsenand Joseph Fiennes. The movie isbased on two books, William Breuer’s“The Great Raid on Cabanatuan” andHampton Sides’ “Ghost Soldiers”.Ghost Soldiers recount Japan’s initialmilitary triumphs throughout Asia andthe South Pacific and the subsequentemergency evacuation of Allied troopsfrom Bataan in 1942. It also describesthe horror faced by survivors of the hid-eous Bataan Death March as theystruggled to stay alive in the POWcamp at Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija. Thehighlight of the book, however, is thedaring liberation of the 513 British and

American soldiers who clung to life in theinfamous POW camp.

In early 1945, the Japanese in the Philip-pines are faced with certain defeat againstGeneral Douglas “I Shall Return” McArthur’sU.S. Forces. Because of this, Tokyo issueda “Kill All” policy on the thousands of Alliedprisoners of war held in Japanese concen-tration camps. Without mercy, they executeevery captive G.I. when their defeat by ap-proaching allied forces becomes inevitable. The pipe smoking, ray-ban wearing generalsees this as an opportunity to undertake atheatrical, high-risk rescue mission. In typi-cal McArthur fashion, the rescue raid is longon emotional value but has limited strategicor military value. Thankfully, however, the res-cue mission was flawlessly executed by theU.S. Army’s Sixth Ranger Battalion led by

ing the life of thenational hero ofthe Philippines. She calls Cesar a“consummate actor”.He spent six monthsstudying and research-ing for the role of Rizalbased on the five-page syl-labus Abaya gave him. Hecould have done a lot of othermovies and earned a lot ofmoney instead. But he didn’t.

After doing Jose Rizal, Cesarrealized that there were a lotmore films he could do. Hewanted to do very Filipino projects that wouldhelp promote Philippine culture to theyounger generation. After Jose Rizal, Cesarworked with Abaya in Muro-Ami and BagongBuwan. The tandem proves to be a good one.

One of his latestventures, as pro-

ducer, director andactor, was the am-bitious “Panaghoy

sa Suba”. Showcasing thecharms of Loboc River in his

hometown, the high-risk film utilizedBohol’s regional dialect and cost about

PhP25 million. But it was worth it.Currently, Cesar Montano is appearing in

“The Great Raid” with Benjamin Bratt, JamesFranco, Connie Nielsen and Joseph Fiennes. He plays Capt. Juan Pajota, a leader of filipinoGuerilla forces. Cesar recalls that he lostabout 10 pounds during the boot camp heldfor actors before the actual filming. So what’snext for Cesar? He has his mind set on recre-ating the Dagohoy rebellion and theBalangiga massacre on screen. That’s think-ing out of the box for Philippine movies.

Remembering the Rescue RaidLt. Col. Henry Mucci and Captain RobertPrince. The Sixth Ranger Battalion at thattime had yet to see combat duty and yet man-aged to infiltrate enemy lines and grappledwith a retreating Japanese Army that pos-sessed a vast superiority in numbers.

Historians like Hampton Sides acknowl-edge, however, that the mission would nothave been successful without the support ofthe local Filipino guerillas. The Filipino gue-rillas not only provided crucial intelligenceon local terrain and the movement of Japa-nese troops, they also directly confronted theJapanese in a fierce gun battle allowing theAmericans and the rescued POWs to escapewith limited casualties. Robert Prince, oneof the surviving assault commanders of theCabanatuan raid, recalled the decisive roleprovided by the Filipinos:

“The Cabanatuan raid was a success, and the POWS were rescued only be-cause we were assisted by two Filipinoguerrilla forces led by Capt. Juan Pajotaand Capt. Eduardo Joson. Not only didthe Filipino forces provide flank and rearguard protection, with the help of local vil-lagers, they provided us with 50 carabaocarts that allowed us to get the POWsback to safety. We couldn’t have done itwithout the help of the Filipino guerrillasand the support of local villagers of NuevaEcija and for that the American people willbe forever grateful.”

It took 60 years to get this story toldbut it is nonetheless good to know thatthe heroism of Filipinos during WWIIwould be immortalized in Hollywood cel-luloid via “The Great Raid”.

he Great Raid, unfortu-nately, was not shot in thePhilippines. It was shot on

location in Australia where WorldWar II Cabanatuan was repli-cated. However, several moviesshot on location in the Philippinesended up achieving box office andcritical success. Some even wonAcademy awards. We’ve listedthese now “classic” movies as wellas certain trivia associated witheach.

Apocalypse Now (1979)Based on Joseph Conrad’s book“Heart of Darkness”, this movie isa controversial addition to themultitude of Vietnamwar movies in exist-ence. The movie fol-lows Captain Willard(Martin Sheen) on hismission into Cambo-dia to assassinate ren-egade Green BeretColonel Kurtz(Marlon Brando) whohas set himself up as aGod among a localtribe. Filming of thismovie (mostly in

Pagsanjan andBaguio) was ex-tremely difficult withshooting extendingwell beyond schedule. The original six-weekschedule ended uptaking 16 months. Atyphoon destroyedsets, causing a delayof several months. The film went wayover budget, directorFrancis FordCoppolla threatenedto commit suicide and actor Sheenhad a heart attack. The helicop-ters and pilots used for filming

were supplied by theMarcos governmentand were also neededfor fighting the NPA.As a result, the pilotsand helicopters oftenhad to go from film-ing to combat dutyand vise versa.

The Year of LivingDangerously (1983)Put together by ac-claimed Australian

director Peter Weir, this movie featured ayoung Mel Gibson(Mad Max, LethalWeapon, etc.) as ajournalist in volatileIndonesia in thelate1960’s. Then In-donesian dictatorSuharto did not al-low the film to beshot in Jakarta and asa result, film produc-tion had to be movedto Manila. Filipinos

who watch this film will be sur-prised to find outthat much of thenon-English dia-logue in the film isin Fil ipino, notBahasa or Javanese. The supposedlyMuslim prayers spo-ken in some of thescenes are, in fact, the “Ama Namin”.This movie alsostars Filipino actorsBembol Roco andKuh Ledesma insupporting roles.

Platoon (1986)Former Marineturned movie di-rector Oliver Stonetells his personalstory of how theVietnam Wartransformed youngpoet and writerChris Taylor(played by CharlieSheen) into a sol-dier and a man. This movie, whichwas a major box of-f ice and crit icalsuccess - Platoon grossed US$137million and won the Oscar forBest Picture in 1986 - also servedas a springboard for the film ca-

reers of actorsWillem Dafoe, TomBerenger, JohnnyDepp, John C.McGinley, ForrestWhitaker, and (ofcourse) directorOliver Stone. Allthe scenes were shotin Cavite andPagsanjan. Triviabuffs would be in-terested to knowthat filming for thismovie was sched-uled to begin Febru-

On Location: the PhilippinesT

ary 1986 but wasdelayed by theEDSA Revolution.“I woke up andthere were tanksoutside my hotelroom,” relatedWillem Dafoe.

Born on the Fourth ofJuly (1989)Oliver Stone’s semi-sequel to Platoon, the movie starredTom Cruise as RonKovic, a real life

Vietnam veteran who spoke outagainst the war after cominghome. Director Stone wanted totell movie-goers that “there wasanother war waiting for Vietnamvets when they got home”. Kovic, who was full of patriotism beforegoing to Vietnam, became cynicalabout the war and America ingeneral after his experiences inSouth East Asia. The war sceneswere shot in Laoag and Vigan inIlocos Norte. The scene in whichKovic’s platoon was ambushed(and Kovic was paralyzed) wasshot in the sand dunes of FortIlocandia, just a few minutes awayfrom the resort hotel. The movieearned an Oscar for Best Directorfor Oliver Stone.

Out of Harm’s WayPhilippine Embassy officials in Baghdad have tem-porarily relocated to Amman in nearby Jordan. This after a series of bombings and abductions ofdiplomats in Iraq. Though temporary, the trans-fer will be for an indefinite period of time, accord-ing to Philippine Foreign Undersecretary JoseBrillantes. It was not clear if all of the embassy’sFilipino staff have relocated.

“We continue to maintain our diplomatic tieswith Iraq. The embassy in Baghdad remains openand the diplomats in Baghdad are in Amman forsecurity reasons occasioned by the recentkidnappings of diplomats,” Brillantes said.

After the abductions of Robert Tarongoy andAngelo de la Cruz, the Philippine governmentbanned the deployment of Filipino workers toIraq. The ban is still in effect, according toBrillantes. At present, are between 6,000 and7,000 Filipino workers in Iraq, mostly as cooksand maintenance personnel in US military camps.

Clarifying Saudi Police ClearanceThe Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) saidthat the Saudi police do not require overseas Fili-pino workers to secure a clearance from them be-fore they’re allowed to return to the Philippines.Ambassador Bahnarim Guinomla of the Philip-pine Embassy in Riyadh clarified that Saudi au-

thorities do not issue police clearance to home-boundOFWs.

The department issued the clarification after itreceived reports that there were workers victimized.A “syndicate” requires OFWs to secure a “policeclearance” for a fee before they can book their flighthome.

Guinomla further clarified that the PhilippineEmbassy already issues a certification that the request-ing party does not have a derogatory record.

Assault on Filipino protesters in JeddahThe Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC)urges concerned Filipinos worldwide to request foran immediate investigation by the Philippine govern-ment on the reported assault on four Filipinos byConsulate Guards. The four were headed for a dia-logue at the Philippine Consulate in Jeddah, King-dom of Saudi Arabia on July 16, 2005 when theywere mauled by a Philippine Overseas Labor Office(POLO) officer backed by security guards. Injuredwere Leo Legaspi of Migrante, a migrant workers or-ganization, Jackiline Pakpakin, Jessica Hapos andIrene Mahinay.

Las Vegas, Here We Come51 Filipino teachers were recruited from the Phil-ippines to teach in the fast-growing Clark CountySchool District. This is under an international re-cruitment program designed to help meet a short-age of teachers is the Las Vegas-based district.

With the academic year starting Aug. 29, thedistrict still needs to hire 400 full-time teacherswhile plans to open 11 new schools this monthare in the works. The upcoming school year willusher in an estimated 296,000 students in 313schools, making the educational district the fifth-largest in the US.

D ear Sir,What would be the best

thing to do first once you arrive atyour destination? I shall be leav-ing for Germany in a month’s timeand would like to know what oth-ers did first. It will be my first timeto go out of the country and I amvery excited. Although, I will betraveling, I am also conscious ofthe financial strain that this couldcreate. I would also like to askabout saving tips on trips.

Miguel San Jose

Dear Miguel,Well, there are always the for-malities of proceeding to im-migration, declaring medi-cines that you may havebrought along with you.

If you are going as a tour-ist and don’t have someonewho will pick you up from theairport, it is best to ask the cabdriver to bring you to yourhotel straight away. I’m sure

that once you get to your des-tination you will be very tiredfrom the long trip. Make surethat you have the name andaddress of your hotel writtendown in a notebook, PDA oreven cellphone for easy access.

Once you are at the ho-tel, proceed to the conciergeor information desk, or check-in counter so that you may beable to drop off your stuff inyour room.

Then the fun begins. WhenI first traveled all I needed weremy sneakers and two feet. Af-ter depositing all my stuff insidemy room, I then went strolling, city map in hand. First, I lookedfor the visitor’s center. There Igot all the maps, interestingplaces to visit and landmarksthat I needed or wanted to ex-perience for my stay. I alsolooked for grocery stores, bak-eries, convenience stores whereI could buy cheaper food.Rather than ordering hotelfood, I chose to save by buyingoutside. Instead of taking thecab or taxi, I looked for the busstation. Here, I found othermaps and bus routes that

helped me get to destinationsthat I wanted to see.

Before I forget, if you aregoing to stay for more than amonth, then I suggest thatyou look for apartments, orstay with some people whooffer vacant rooms in theirhouse for rent. This will loweryour cost considerably. I foundan apartment through theirlocal version of Buy and Sell.It cost me 150 dollars perweek as compared to 70 dol-lars a night in my hotel. How-ever, you will have to do mostof the cooking of your meals.

If you plan to movearound a lot then a rental willbe the best value for your. Bearin mind that Europe drives onthe left side of the road, some-thing that you must imbed inyour conscious mind.

Again, I would like tostress research. Do a littleweb surfing about the desti-nation. This not only opti-mizes your time once you getthere but also allows youmore time for fun.

Enjoy your trip.Fons Mariano

inancial planning (FP) isthe process of meeting

life’s goals through the propersupervision of one’s finances. One person’s goals in life maynot be the same as the next; FP,therefore, is a very personalizedprocess. Next, no matter whatyour current financial status is,you will need a plan to achieveyour goals. None of us plan tofail, but sadly, many of us failto plan. Finally, FP is also acontinuing process; as youmeet your life’s goals through-out time, your methods ofachieving them will alsochange.

Steps in making a finan-cial plan:• Know what you want. A com-fortable retirement, the best edu-cation for your children, a beau-tiful house, a second honey-moon? You need to prioritizeyour objectives to make the pro-cess more realistic.

FP is not just for the rich, it iseveryone’s responsibility. Plan-ning helps you make smarterdecisions and provides peace ofmind from the stability of yourfinancial position.

If you wish to know more aboutfinancial planning, call Philamlife’sOFW Market Department at 526-9380 or 526-9381, [email protected] orvisit our website atwww.ofweb.net.ph.

PHILAMLIFE, togetherwith OWWA and the PilipinasOnline Bantay OCW Founda-tion, will conduct a free finan-cial planning forum for OFWson August 15, 2005 - Mondayat the Grotto Vista Resort,San Jose Del Monte Ci ty,Bulacan from 1:00 to 5:00 pm.Walk-in guests are welcome toattend.

• Know your financial position. How much income do you receiveand how much to you spend? Doyou have any savings, loans, otherinvestments? If you have more li-abilities than assets, you will haveto make extreme adjustments in theway you plan your finances. If yoursavings, investments and other as-sets are greater than your debts, youare on the right track, but alwayswith room for improvement. Then, match this reality with your objec-tives - are they still reasonable ordo you have to be more practical?

After answering the two basicFP questions of “Where are you fi-nancially?” and “Where do youwant to go?”, you can now reviewyour investment options. This willhelp you choose the instruments inorder to reach your financial goals.Savings deposits, life insurance, mutual funds, pre-need contracts, money market placements, andmany other vehicles are there tobuild your “investment basket” orportfolio.

lite Garments International has long been oneof the stalwarts of the garment industry. Anexporter since the 1950s, they came up withtheir first local

label, Twenty-TwoBC. It was a conces-sionaire located insideleading departmentstores.

When the family’seldest daughter,Sheree Roxas-ChuaGotuaco, graduatedfrom fashion designand came back to thePhilippines, sheestablished En-sembles, a labelknown for corporateattires. Ensembles wasdoing so well thatcopycats soonsurfaced and sheeventually decided tocome up with anotherunique concept.

Franchise OfficerBelle Dumawalrecalls, “Doon niyanaisip to come up with

E Freeway. Freeway’s concept is trendy, sexy, stylish natalagang pang-kikay.”

Freeway first targeted the 18 to 29-year oldmarket but was pleasantlysurprised. Belle recollects, “Ibana ngayon. Kahit na medyo older, gusto na rin mag-dress up. Soiyong market namin, inextendnamin. Naging 18-45 years oldand even older pa sometimes.Sila pa rin iyong percentage ngmarket na pumapasok sa store.Kasi sila iyong may money.”

Part of Freeway’ssuccess is because the clothesare trendy yet affordable. Acollection comes out everyweek to provide variety indesigns. But only in smallquantities so that one cus-tomer does not bump intosomeone with a similar outfit.

Company-ownedoutlets numbered 21 in 2003.They also received numerousinquiries regarding franchising, particularly from the prov-inces. Freeway is looking forenergetic and detail-orientedpartners. Belle expounds,

“Initially, we prefer someone who really loves loves loves fashion. That’svery important. Siyempre, sino ba iyong nasa fashion? Female. Sanabetween the market na tinatarget namin which is 18-45.”

Belle is confident a Freewayfranchise would suit OFWs.“Especially kung OFW ka, if youare really into fashion, hindi siyamahirap i-manage. Because una,the product line naman itself cancompete with other labels.Pangalawa, the investment is notreally that big compared to otherapparel brands. Plus, we reallybelieve that if the franchisee reallymanages it, mabilis lang iyongreturn of investment. Iyon ’ yungnakita namin based on our experi-ence.”

Belle is happy to share thatalthough Freeway started as aladies apparel brand, they havegiven in to requests from theircustomers and now carry a lineof footwear, bags and accessoriesas well.

That’s why there’s no reason aFreeway girl cannot give free reignto self-expression when it comes toher personal style. “If you want tobe medyo iba iyong dating mo, youcan wear mga camouflage. If youwant naman pa-tweetums, you canwear and choose from a lot of colors.Iyong mga accessories, meron dindoon. Ang maganda lang sa Freeway, you can really express yourself and‘yung mood mo.”

8 August 15-21, 2005 I OFW Guardian KUWENTONG OFW

eny Diaz is a BSE graduate of St.Paul College of Manila, major inMathematics. She spent 10 yearsteaching in an exclusive school in

Parañaque before accepting an offer toteach in an international school inMozambique, Africa.

Kahit saan, basta abroad.Iyong idea ko ng Africa, backward talaga.Gubat… Brown na brown ang makikitamo. Pero noong pagdating, maganda palasiya. Parang Pilipinas lang.

Teaching in anInternational SchoolThrice as much ang salary compared sapinanggalingan ko. Lahat ng subject, discussion is English. Kaya lang, natuto akounti-unti ng Portugese. Kasi, hindi lahat ngbata, marunong. And then you have to askmga locals.

Iyong mga bata namin, expat din. Kunglocal sila, big time yan. At first, mahirap. Lahat ngstrategies, you have to try. Basis ko iyongclass ko, intellectually, mas magaling angPinoy. Ang hirap magturo ng foreigner.Hindi lang medyo. Wild talaga sila. Theyrelate to you as a friend, not as a teacher.Pero nandon iyong respect.

Mostly Pinoy teachers kami pero mayother nationalities. May taga-Ghana, India,Iranian, Canadian pa akong nakasama. Masmadaling makipag-deal sa kanila. You cansay anything you want.

Life in MozambiqueSa weather, extreme. Mas mainit doon peronagha-hail. Weekends, we walk along thebeach. Mga foreigners nagpupunta. Libre.Pinaliliguan pa talaga.

Meron kaming maid. We have separateallowance for that. Siya ang magluluto, maglalaba, plantsa. Ang tawag talaga saamin is señora.

One year behind or more ang sine nila.Pero iyong movie house, maganda. Iyongshopping mall, don’t expect something thatelegant. Tapos iyong market, parangQuiapo or Divisoria. Dollar. So iyong coke between3,000-5,000. Ang burger is 10,000. Al-though most of them are Muslims, maynabibiling pork kasi open city. Banana. Pinya. Papaya.Cassava. May rice din. May gulay. Sa ulam, wala ring difference. Wala lang bangus.Iyong galunggong, iba hitsura pero meronsila. What I like most, crabs. 15 pesos langper kilo.

For 10 years, nagbo-board ako. Parangsanay na ako na wala sa bahay. So adjustedako. Pero hindi pala. Iyong ika-3rd month, may ginagawa ako sa salas, biglang tumuloluha ko. Pag nasa Pilipinas kasi, kahit nasaboardinghouse ka, if you want to go home,

ConqueringAfrica

anytime, you can. Dito, ang layo. Peromeron kaming Fil-community. Mayactivities at least once a month or kungmay birthday-birthday.

Most Memorable ExperiencesMy first year, wala akong ipon kasi puntakami ng Europe. Hindi ganon kalaki ang sweldo namin butthe experience is worth it.

AdviceKung single ka, go! Explore the world!Iba ‘yong independence mo doon. Iba na akongayon. Iba na ang thinking ko. Iba na angideas ko. At saka magiging tough ka. Walakang kakampi. You have friends pero dapatmaging self-reliant ka. You have to take careof yourself. Have enough sleep. Kasi kunghindi, magiging frail ang katawan mo. Walakang resistensiya. Doon ako naging stronger.I had to learn to stand on my own.

Pero you can.It helps a lot kapag gusto mo ang gagawinmo. Tapos, i-assure mo iyong sarili mo nakaya mo ‘to. Kaya mo ‘to.

Kung single ka, go!

Explore the world!

Iba ‘yong independence

mo doon. Iba na ako

ngayon. Iba na ang

thinking ko. Iba na ang

ideas ko. At saka

magiging tough ka.

Wala kang kakampi.

You have friends pero

dapat maging self-

reliant ka. You have to

take care of yourself.

hilippine Veterans Bank (PVB) re-ported a net consolidated income ofPhP166.15 million in the first half of

2005, representing a 54.7% increase on ayear-on-year basis with last year’s 1st half netincome at PhP107.39 million. PVB total as-sets stood at PhP21 billion as of the sameperiod. Total capital accounts meanwhilestood at PhP3.99 billion, PVB’s capital ad-equacy ratio, a measure of banks to shoul-der risks, still remained at a high 33%. TheBSP minimum capital adequacy ratio is 10%.

PVB President and CEO Ricardo A.Balbido, Jr. attributed the increase in netincome to earnings from both corporateand retail loans, portfolio investments, higher gains from securities trading andhigher fee-based transactions. He said thatthe bank’s first semester performance andfigures were “on target, despite the prevail-ing slow pace of business and invest-ments.” Balbido said he was optimistic thatthe bank will likely meet its annual netincome target of PhP300M by year-end.Last year, PVB posted a net income ofPhP260 million.

PVB increased deposits accounted for therise in total resources. PVB deposits were re-ported at PhP15.75 billion, an increase of34.69% from PhP11.56 billion at 2004yearend. Low-cost or current and savings ac-counts were maintained at 48.9% of totaldeposits.

PVB is a private, commercial bank with44 branches nationwide catering to both pri-vate and government markets. PVB is stilllooking at expanding its branch network.

The hair transplant procedure begins witha mild anesthesia to minimize any discomfortand during the procedure itself, the client cansit back, relax and watch TV, talk to the doc-tors and staff, make phone calls and/or listento music without feeling much discomfort.

f you own things thatwill be very hard to re-place without facing se-

vere financial hardship, thesethings ought to be insured. Ingeneral, think of insurance as“hardship avoidance,” not“convenience” or “hitting thejackpot.” When determiningwhether or not to buy insur-ance, just remember the fol-lowing basic points:

1. Insurance has only onepurpose. To protect against afinancial loss. Financial lossesmay occur if you die, are in-jured, become sick, if yourproperty is damaged, de-stroyed, or stolen, or if you getsued. The key word is “finan-cial” since it is impossible toprotect against the lossesthemselves. Thus, insuranceprotects us from the negativefinancial impact caused by aloss. If there is no financial loss, there is no need to protectagainst it through insurance.

2. Insurance works on thebasis of “risk transference”.The policyholder pays the in-surance company to take onthe risk of financial loss asso-ciated with the occurrence ofan unwanted event.

3. Keep in mind that in-surance companies makemoney by selling to peoplewho do not need it: theywant you to buy insurancebut never file a claim. Andto help them maintain prof-itability, the insurance indus-try has learned over manyyears of experience that con-sumers fall into one of twobroad groups: those who fileclaims and those who don’t.This is why it is important todetermine your needs priorto buying insurance. Youdon’t want to make premiumpayments for a service you donot need. If you do decide tobuy insurance, however, al-ways purchase it from a repu-table company. There isnothing worse than makingthose premium paymentsover time and then findingout that the company youmade a deal with is unable tofulfill its end of the bargain.

“Actually, it’s so good. Even though, busyako pero naiintindihan niya. Saka kung walanaman akong kanta, lahat ng time nasa sakanya, ako talaga ang nag-aasikaso, pati angpagtu-tutor.

“Mas happy ako ngayon, kasi mas nai-enjoy ko ang life ko ngayon. Dati kasi, I wasworking but I’m not seeing them ‘cause I’mnot with them.

“But right now, magkakasama na kami, dito na kami nag-I-stay sa Manila,” sabi paniya.

“Well, I do my best as a mom,” mabilisniyang sagot.

“I do my best in singing and I do best inloving. I’m very much in love right now, es-pecially with my family and my career.

“I do my best, dahil ‘yun ang gusto ng tao.But right now, I’m not proving na ako talagaang best. Ang sa akin lang, kakantahin ko‘yung songs na talagang nasa puso ko.

“Kasi I really love singing. I gave up teach-ing because of singing.”

After two years, sikat na sikat na siSheryn, hindi lang sa buong bansa pati narin sa ibang parte ng mundo na kung saannakapag-concert na siya kasama ang ibapang ‘champions’.

Kaya nararapat na bigyan na siya ng tituloat siya na nga ang tinaguriang ‘The CrystalVoice of Asia’.

Sheryn Regis“But it’s the support and wellingness to

give up anything just for you.

But if given, I will really ac-cept it. Kasi nakapag-Music Museum na ako, then sa ‘yun sa Cebu, malaking venue ‘yun.

“Pero kung mabigyan ako ng chance, siyempre dream ko na mag-concert saAraneta, although ilang beses na akongnakapag-concert doon.

“Actually sa September 2, guest kami niErik (Santos) sa concert ni Gary Valencianosa Big Dome, ‘yun Symphony of the Heart.Tapos sa October 7 (San Diego) and 8 (LosAngeles) may concert kami sa Californiapara sa Stars In A Million - The Reunion2005

“Good Evening, Mr. Zuniga. Are you sureyou’re in this class?”

“Bahala kayo,” sambit ni Tammy, “Let’sget back to what we were discussing beforewe were distracted. Mr. Zuniga, since you’relate, what do you think are the objectives ofbusiness?”

“Miss?”“Yes?”“Para kumita syempre,” sagot ni Sean na

tatayo sana kung hindi lang pinigilan ngkatabing si Dilbert.

“Ano pa?”“Para sumikat.”“Iyon lang ba? How about an advocacy?”“Miss ako ulit?”“Yes.”“I don’t know what you mean.”Biglang tumahimik ang apat na sulok ng

kwarto.

“Mukhang hindi ninyo sineseryoso angseminar na ito,” dagdag ni Tammy, “Howabout a test on the assignment I gave you.”

“Please submit your reaction papers withyour test papers,” aniya, “Then you may leavethe classroom as soon as you’re finished withthe test.”

“I’m about to leave. You may want to sub-mit your papers now,” ani Tammy, “Other-

wise, I’ll see you tomorrow.”Tumayo si Sean. Habang papalapit ito sa

kanya parang may kakaiba siyangnararamdaman. Tila kinakabahan ang guro.

“Miss, I’m sorry hindi ako nakapag-aral.”“Look, you don’t have to say you’re sorry,”

“Yeah, right,” sagot nito habang papalayosa kausap, “See you, Sean.”

“ See you.”
