Go on TRy It with First Defence Black Belt Schools

Mike  Beard  originally  started  training  over  25  years  ago  and  formed  First  Defence  Black  Belt  Schools  to  help  children  and  adults  overcome  a  wealth  of  different  obstacles  in  life.    Mike  explains  he  was  hospitalized  at  the  age  of  20  through  stress  of  a  previous  job  and  that  a  lifestyle  change  was  needed,  this  was  the  reason  he  started  training  in  Taekwondo.  Mike  also  suffered  with  Asthma  and  since  he  started  training  in  Martial  Arts  the  stress  problem  have  never  reoccurred  and  the  Asthma  has  virtually  cleared  up  and  gone.

Mike  says,  “There  are  many  reasons  why  children  come  and  train  with  us  at  First  Defence,  it’s  not  all  about  children  getting  bullied  but  it  is  one  reason.    We  find  we  get  children  from  all  walks  of  life  some  are  just  lacking  confidence,  low  esteem  and  some  may  have  ADHD  or  need  to  lose  some  weight.”

He  explains,  “When  I  was  at  school  I  hated  all  mainstream  sports  and  we  are  finding  that  some  children  who  come  to  our  classes  love  what  we  do  but  not  the  mainstream  sports  at  school  just  like  I  was  some  years  ago.”

“Martial  arts  can  help  adult’s  gain  more  confidence,  flexibility,  strength,  stamina,  stress  relief,  weight  loss  and  as  a  bonus  give  them  useful  insight  to  self  defence  skills.  A  lot  of  teenagers  and  adults  come  to  us  to  learn  self  defence,  we  don’t  believe  in  short  6  week  courses  of  self  defence  as  a  couple  of  weeks  down  the  line  all  will  be  forgotten.    Self  defence  needs  to  be  ongoing  and  you  need  to  enhance  and  refine  the  skills  you  gain  from  what  you  learn  in  class  there  is  no  quick  fix  for  learning  self  defence.”  Says  Mike.    “Martial  arts  can  really  help  with  the  stresses  of  everyday  life  some  professional  people  may  say  that  they  do  not  have  time  but  with  168  hours  in  a  week  a  couple  of  hours  training  in  a  week  can  make  a  real  difference  to  your  health  and  lifestyle.”    First  Defence  are  proud  to  have  supported  local  charities  and  over  the  last  few  years  the  club  has  donated  well  over  £10,000.00.  They  are  a  local  club  who  thrive  on  team  building,  which  may  help  towards  making  new  friends.  Why  not  go  along  and  see  for  yourself  and  ask  club  members  what  being  in  a  martial  arts  club  has  done  for  them.

What  is  good  customer  service?  Honesty,  making  someone  comfortable  and  is  has  to  come  from  the  heart.  If  somebody  is  comfortable  enough  to  walk  through  my  door  then  the  next  step  is  for  me  to  make  them  welcome.  I  love  meeting  and  greeting  people  and  I  think  this  is  a  better  experience  than  the  faceless  shopping  of  online.    How  would  friends  describe  you?  Fun  to  be  around,  good  shopping  partner  and  gives  good  advice,  being  helpful.  I  don’t  like  to  be  told  ‘No’  but  I  like  to  use  the  word  ‘No’  with  my  family!  Describe  a  typical  day  off  being  Jane.  I  have  Sundays  off  and  I  love  to  walk  our  Dog  ‘Max’,  especially  when  we  live  in  such  a  lovely  part  of  the  country.    Top  Tip…  Don’t  be  afraid  to  try  anything  once!    Hobbies...Jogging  and  socialising  with  friends  and  a  glass  of  wine,  discovering  new  things,  walking  the  dog  and  music.    Your  favourite  piece  of  clothing?  Boots  –  I  have  had  them  since  2008,  I  have  2  pairs!    Your  Simple  Pleasure?  People  watching,  with  a  cup  of  coffee  and  a  slice  of  Red  Velvet  cake.    Proudest  Moment?  When  I  had  Jasmine.  The  whole  situation  was  just  magic.  I  couldn’t  stop  looking  at  her.  I  will  take  that  with  me  for  the  rest  of  my  life.    Favourite  Food?  Sausages  or  pork  chops  with  beans  and  an  egg.

Tell  me  about  Just  Like  This.  It  happened  after  a  holiday  to  Tenerife,  and  Steve  suggested  that  I  should  start  up  my  own  business.  In  2006  the  shop  was  finally  empty,  I  always  liked  the  shop,  and  I  got  the  keys  and  took  a  look  around.  It  was  just  what  I  wanted.  I  never  planned  the  layout  of  the  shop  it  has  evolved  and  I  am  always  adding  to  it.  I’ve  tried  it  all:  men’s  and  ladies,  ladies  and  children’s  and  now  its  ladies  clothing  and  accessories. How  do  you  handle  stress  and  pressure?  What  do  you  do  to  relax?  Jogging  and  singing  to  music  in  the  car.    Have  you  always  had  a  passion  for  fashion?  Yes,  I  have  an  eclectic  taste,  so  I’m  not  just  about  the  50’s  and  I  am  a  mood  dresser  too.    How  do  you  evaluate  success?  All  sorts  of  ways:  Having  a  rapport  with  customers  and  people,  it’s  not  always  in  monetary  form  and  keeping  hopeful  for  the  future.    Did  you  go  to  Art  College  or  study  fashion?  No  I’ve  been  working  since  I  was  13.  My  first  job  was  for  a  newsagent  polishing  and  sweeping.    What  was  the  last  luxury  item  you  brought?  A  tattoo!  On  my  backside!  It’s  turning  into  a  little  habit  now!    What  are  you  goals  for  the  future?  To  titivate  the  shop:  a  few  painting  projects,  moving  things  around  and  dressing  up  units.  You  have  to  work  hard  up  on  the  High  Street,  it  keeps  you  on  your  toes,  you  can’t  rest  –  fire  in  the  belly  so  to  speak.  I’m  on  the  look  out  for  new  shoe  and  bag  companies  and  I  am  quite  keen  to  have  a  men’s  corner  with  some  funky  shirts.    Is  it  the  best  feeling  when  someone  walks  out  the  shop  with  a  whole  new  outfit  for  a  special  occasion?  Oh  it  is!  The  best  thing  is  when  I  get  them  to  come  out  of  the  changing  room  and  check  themselves  in  the  shop  mirror  with  more  room  and  I  usually  encourage  the  customer  to  take  a  twirl  in  the  dresses.  This  is  when  they  give  their  most  honest  reaction,  with  more  room  and  not  enclosed.      What  makes  you  happy?  Happy,  positive  people  around  me,  I  buzz  off  that  energy.  There’s  too  much  sadness.    How  did  the  Christmas  parade  go?  Went  well,  lots  of  atmosphere  with  Falmouth  Marine  Band.  Last  book  you  read?  Fifty  Shades  of  Gray…After  the  2nd  one  I  go  bored  and  didn’t  even  bother  with  the  3rd.  I  don’t  know  what  I’m  looking  for  in  life!  I  listen  to  a  lot  of  music  too  and  I  can’t  wait  for  the  next  series  of  Game  of  Thrones! Your  favourite  film?  Hot  Fuzz  –  It’s  so  funny,  no  matter  how  many  times  I  have  seen  it,  it  still  makes  me  laugh!    Describe  yourself..A  bit  bonkers!  I  like  spontaneity,  off  the  cuff.  But  having  a  business  you  cant  always  be  like  that,  it  is  in  my  nature.  But  I  have  no  idea  where  I  would  be  without  my  family!  They  keep  me  grounded.  Also  I  would  hate  to  offend  anybody,  ever.

Yomojo - a holistic approach to weight loss YOMOJO is a new weight loss club led by our team of Motivators.

We encourage our members to lose weight by taking a holistic approach to eating a balanced diet and increasing their daily activity.

It is all about the motivation to lose weight and feel great. Regular classes will be held at the Falmouth Sports Club on Fridays between 2pm and 3pm, from 17th January.

We welcome men and women of all ages.

Yomojo membership costs £5 a week and this includes regular one to one consultations between our members and their Motivators as well as access to the weekly classes.

During the one to one consultations we set achievable weight loss and movement targets and review these regularly to ensure Yomojo members achieve their weight loss goals.

Barbara Peppiatt of Yomojo says, “We want our members to embrace a healthier lifestyle to achieve a permanent healthy weight and feel great about themselves and we are here to help them do just that”. Our Motivators are carefully selected people with empathy, knowledge and a huge desire to help people to achieve their targets”.

Yomojo classes will be opening throughout Cornwall and we are looking for Motivators to run these classes. If you are interested in our holistic approach to weight loss and have the motivation to help others, please call Barbara on 01726 824502. Full training and support will be given to the right individuals.

SHOW YOUR LOVE FOR CLIC UNIT, TRELISKE, TRURO.

This  year  Falmouth  RFC  has  chosen  THE  CLIC  UNIT  AT  TRELISKE,  as  their  charity.  This  is  at  the  request  of  myself  (Jeff  Maddern),  as  my  step-‐son  Curtis  is  at  this  moment  receiving  treatment  for  Acute  Lymphoblastic  Lymphoma,  a  type  of  childhood  Leukaemia.  He  has  been  receiving  intensive  Radiotherapy  and  Chemotherapy  at  Bristol  and  Truro,  but  mainly  at  Treliske  Hospital  since  February  2013.  The  prognosis  is  very  good  thanks  to  the  marvellous  treatment  he  has  received  from  all  the  health  care  specialists  at  the  CLIC  Units  both  in  Bristol  and    Treliske.  With  their  professionalism  and  dedication  the  staff  has  nursed  Curtis  through  this  very  difficult  and  uncertain  9  months,  they  are  ALL  amazing.  Raising  much  needed  funds  for  the  local  Treliske  CLIC  unit  will  help  to  maintain  the  specialist  CLIC  Nurses  who  support  the  patients  and  families  through  this  incredibly  stressful  time.    Curtis  has  one  more  month  of  intensive  Chemotherapy  before  he  embarks  on  a  3  year  period  of  low  dose,  maintenance  chemotherapy.  Much  of  his  care  will  be  home  based  and  performed  by  the  specialist  CLIC  nurses  who  are  NOT  funded  by  the  NHS.  Every  penny  raised  will  be  put  to  good  use  locally  and  will  be  a  small  gesture  on  our  behalf  to  say  a  huge  “THANK  YOU”  to  these  special  people.  Curtis  is  not  the  only  child  by  any  means  going  through  chemotherapy  on  the  CLIC  unit  in  Treliske  Hospital.  The  specialist  Drs  and  nurses  need  constant  update  training  on  new  and  better  treatments  being  brought  out  all  the  time.  Their  tireless  dedication  to  their  patients  is  exceptional  and  we  (and  many  other  parents  too)  are  incredibly  grateful  for  their  time  and  care.    We  (the  function  organisers)  all  ask  you  for  your  kind  support  for  this  important  fund  raiser,  DINNER  &  DANCE  ON  SATURDAY  15TH  FEBRUARY  AT  THE  FALMOUTH  HOTEL.  Tickets  are  ONLY  £24  for  a  3  course  meal  with  tea/coffee  and  a  Disco.  ORGANIZE  A  GROUP  OF  FRIENDS  AND  A  TABLE.  No  one  to  go  with  but  would  like  to  participate?  Let  us  know  and  we  will  organise  seats  for  you.    BUY  YOUR  TICKETS  FROM  JEFF  MADDERN  01326  377966  or  079673787,  DAVE  ADINNALL  01326  311527,  TIFF  BAILEY  07854091366  OR  DEBBIE  MADDERN  (NE  GALLAGHER)  07825990155.    An  even  BIGGER  request:  ANY  ITEMS  YOU  ARE  ABLE  TO  DONATE  TO  OUR  LUXURY  RAFFLE  ON  THE  NIGHT  WILL  BE  GRATEFULLY  RECEIVED………(BUSINESSES  IT’S  A  GREAT  WAY  TO  PROMOTE/FREE  ADVERTISE  YOUR  BUSINESS!  Make  the  most  of  it!)    ALL  RAFFLE  DONATIONS  WILL  BE  RECOGNISED  ON  THE  WINNERS  BOARD  ON  THE  NIGHT!!  LOOK  FORWARD  TO  SEEING  YOU  ON  THE  15TH.  REGARDS  JEFF  and  DEBBIE  MADDERN

So Much Choice www.falmouthchurchestogether.org.uk

Since  I  became  chair  of  Falmouth  and  Penryn  Churches  Together  (F&PCT)  in  September  I  have  had  the  opportunity  to  get  to  know  the  churches  in  our  area  in  closer  depth.  What  has  struck  me  the  most  is  that  they  are  not  a  group  of  individual  churches  at  all!  The  fact  is  that  they  are  all  departments  of  one  unit  making  up  the  church  in  Falmouth  and  Penryn.

What  do  I  mean?  Each  of  our  individual  communities  is  working  toward  one  goal.  To  help  you  and  I  understand  just  how  much  God  loves  us.  This  work,  along  with  giving  a  place  of  family  and  teaching  to  their  congregations,  is  common  to  each  and  every  one  of  them.  Of  course  there  are  issues  on  which  we  don’t  agree  but  they  are  secondary  to  our  main  aim.  So…I  have  discovered  that  in  fact  the  differences  between  us  mean  that  we  can  offer  you  tremendous  choice  in  styles  of  worship,  music  and  teaching.  That  in  turn  means  that  one  of  the  churches  in  your  locality  is  likely  to  meet  the  need  of  any  taste  and  personality.

It  would  take  the  entire  magazine  to  describe  each  individual  group.  F&PCT  includes  from  the  Quakers,  Salvation  Army,  Elim,  Assemblies  of  God,  Free  Evangelical,  Roman  Catholic,  Baptist,  Methodist,  United  Reformed,  to  the  Anglian  churches.  All  providing  different  styles  to  suit  different  people.

The  activities  of  F&PCT  are  as  varied  as  its  members.  Again,  the  difference  in  emphasis  is  wide.  From  Street  Pastors  to  services  held  regularly  in  our  local  Care  Homes.  It  would  fill  the  page  to  begin  to  describe  them.  Perhaps  this  is  an  article  for  another  time!

Do  you  understand  my  point?  Because  we  are  all  so  different  we  want  our  unity  to  show  you,  our  friends  and  neighbours,  that  there  is  a  Christian  community  in  Falmouth  and  Penryn  to  suit  everyone  of  us.  All  trying  to  show  how  much  God  loves  us  as  individuals.  Warts  and  all!

We  would  love  to  meet  you.  Our  website  will  give  you  all  the  details  you  need  in  terms  of  types  and  times  of  services.  Or  just  call  in  to  any  of  our  churches  and  I  promise  they  will  give  you  a  warm  welcome.

Over  to  you  to  make  your  choice!

Jennie  Morgan  Chair  of  Falmouth  and  Penryn  Churches  Together.
