Enduring the long lines under the scorching heat of the sun, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims flocked the National Shrine of Our Lady of Candles during the Jaro Fiesta 2014

last February 2.These religious aficionados lined up to proximally venerate

Candelaria (as Our Lady is fondly called by locals) situated at the façade of the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral. They believe that by doing so, she will intercede for their prayers usually to recover from sickness, to have a safe trip, to land a job or to find a husband or wife, among others. Holding bouquets of flowers and candles, some devotees went there to express gratitude for her intercession in trying times.

“We came here to pray. We wanted a baby boy [and it was given to us so], we came here to give thanks,” said Raj, an Indian national who came to visit Candelaria for the first time together with her husband, James and their son who they consider a blessing.

Meanwhile, in commemoration of this liturgical year dubbed as the Year of the Laity, Jaro Fiesta 2014 was themed, “Jareños: Called to be Saints…Sent Forth as Heroes, Bringing Light to the World with Mary.”

To vivify and perpetuate this year’s theme, various liturgical activities were organized in cooperation with the lay people. A series of novena masses from January 24 to February 1, 2014 marked the beginning of the celebration.

Isa naman ka madinalag-on nga selebrasyon ang ginhiwat nga piesta sang Candelaria sang nagligad nga

Pebrero 2, 2014. Ang kapiestahan sang Candelaria kilala indi lamang diri sa Pilipinas kundi sa bilog nga kalibutan. Madamo sang mga turista ang nagtambong sa Misa kag luyag man nga makatandog sa imahen ni Candelaria.

Sa kadamuon sang tawo, indi gid malikawan nga may magkalalipong sa sulod sang Katedral, maayo na lang kay preparado man ang simbahan sa mahimo nga matabo nga disgrasya. May mga first aiders sa gwa sang kumbento, madamo man sang mga pulis nga amo ang nagamintinar sang disiplina kag kalinong.

Ang mga manugbaligya sang Perdon magahod samtang naga-ingganyo sa mga manugbakal, paindis-indis sila kag iya-iya nga diskarte para lang maubos ang ila nga Perdon. Lapit sa 200 ka-tapangko ang naplastar sa palibot sang Katedral apang naubos sa gihapon ang nahimo nga Perdon sining tuig.

Bilang isa ka pamatan-on, kami ang nangin “greeters” ukon manugpanamyaw sa mga bisita ilabi na gid sa mga kaparian kag gina-updan sila pakadto sa La Isabelita Hall ukon sa Legion of Mary Hall.

Wala tupong nga kakapoy ang amon nga nabatyagan bangud halin sa aga tubtub sa gab-i ang amon obra. Isa ako sa mga lideres nga kinahanglan nga magiya sa pareho ko man nga pamatan-on. Ginasiguro ko nga sila ang nakakaon kag kon sila na makabatyag sang kakapoy, pangitaan sing mabulos sa ila. Sa pihak sang kakapoy, ara sa likod ang amon nga kalipay bangud nalipay kami sang amon nga ginahimo. Makita gid ang pagkabalaka sa tagsa-tagsa.

Sa akon obserbasyon sa sining tuig na kapiestahan, mas madamo ang tawo ikumpara sang nagligad nga tuig bangud alas-5 pa lang sang aga, halos puno na ang palibot sang Katedral tubtub sa alas-9 sang gab-i.

Magapabilin si Candelaria nga tagdala sang Kapawa nga si Kristo sa aton kabuhi.

Bantog ang kapiestahan sang Candelaria sa bilog nga Pilipinas, kag subong man sa bilog nga kalibutan.

Aga pa sang Domingo sina nga adlaw nagsinigabong na ang drums kag tunog sang trumpeta sang naga-diana, patimaan nga aga na, kag dapat manghimos na agud makasimba sa Katedral kag magpadunggog kay Candelaria. Ang iban aga pa nagpalas-an sang ila inug-baligya nga Perdon pakadto sa KJatedral, nangita sang ila tapanko nga maladladan sang ila kandila. Sa ila pagsampot sa Katedral ila nakita ang mga tigulang nga nagsilimba. Sa malawig na nga tinuig, ang una kag aga pa sa kinaandan nga nagasimba amo ang mga tigulang. Naandan na nila ini nga buluhaton kag wala gid nila ginapaiway. Ila gid ini ginapreparahan.

Ang mga seminarista kaagahon pa nagkadto sa Katedral para magpatigayon sang “Palapak”. Ang mga pulis kag mga barangay tanod aga pa man nagkaladto sa pagpatigayon sang matayuyon nga pagpalakat sang trapiko indi lang sa salakyan kundi sa mga sumilimba man. Sila ang mga nagpatigayon sang “peace and order”. Ang mga manuglutu kag manughugas pinggan aga pa nagparikparik agud mahamtang sa natalana nga tion ang pagkaon.

Ang bilog nga adlaw sang kapiestahan masako kag madamo ang mga tawo nga nagtalambong sa sunod sunod nga Misa. Gutok gid ang sulod sang Katedral, madamu man ang sa Grotto, kag may duha ka malawig nga linya sang mga deboto nga nagasaka sa Shrine sang Mahal nga

How faithful are we in responding to God’s invitation? What are we doing in order to effect change in our world? What are the things that we still need to do?

Let us pray to our Blessed Mother, Our Lady of Lourdes, whose feast we shall celebrate on Tuesday, February 11. Like her, may we become faithful followers of His Son, Jesus.

Makalilingaw maglantaw sang prosesyon, ara ang mga magayon nga mga lin-ay nga nagadala sang AVE MARIA, nga nagapadungog sa Mahal nga Birhen sang Candelaria, ang Reyna sang Jaro kag iya konsorte nagprosesyon man nga may dala nga pendon, ang bandera nga may simbolo sang Mahal nga Birhen. Ang nagakalain-lain nga mga barangay nga sakop sang parokya nag-prosesyon dala ang ila mga estandarte ukon banner nga may mga laragway sang mahal nga Birhen sa Lourdes, Fatima, kag mga laragway sang mga santos nga patron sang iban nga barangay kag iban pa.

Matuod nga nangin madinalag-on ang kapiestahan sang aton Patrona. Apang ang talaksan sang kadalag-an indi ang kadamuon sang tawo kondi kon paano ang mga tumuluo nangin malapit kay Kristo paagi kay Maria, ang Candelaria.

Kita Asin kag Kapawa sa tinaga kag buhat kay ang Pulong sang Dios nagasiling nga dapat mangin kapawa kita sa tagsa-tagsa paagi sa buhat nga naangot sa kabubut-on sang Dios. Sa

pagbuhat naton sang maayo ginapakita kag ginapahayag naton si Kristo nga amo ang Kapawa.

Ang Evangelii Gaudium ni Pope Francis nagasiling nga ini nga misyon indi lamang kabahin sang aton kabuhi kundi aton gid ikabuhi. Ginatawag ini ni Pope Francis nga “AKO ang MISYON”. Ginapaambit naton ang aton kabuhi sa iban subong man ginapaambit naton si Kristo sa iban.

• Paano bala ako nangin isa ka asin ukon kapawa sa akon panimalay kag sa akon isigkatawo?

On the eve before her feast day, an august coronation of Our Lady of Candles was officiated by Rt. Rev. Higinio Velarde, Jr., the parish priest. The symbolic crowning of Mary and the child Jesus on her arm was witnessed by a massive number of Marian supporters and spectators. This serves as the simulation of the historic canonical crowning of the image by then Pope John Paul II in 1981 making Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria as the only image of the Virgin Mary in the

Philippines crowned by the Pope himself. Since then, the annual coronation has been taken by Marian enthusiasts on a different meaning and appreciation.

Hourly masses were also actively participated by the faithful on February 2 which left the cathedral filled leaving no room for late comers. On the same day, a number of infants were officially enlisted to the Catholic congregation and welcomed to the Christian world in a mass baptism at St. Vincent Ferrer Seminary adjacent to the cathedral. A solemn crepuscular procession partaken by the parishioners, pilgrims and

servants of the church dazzled the spectators. The whole-day religious conviviality concluded with regality and splendor when the Fiesta Queen Cezrry Marie Angela Geluz together with her King Jose Alyson Jabat was crowned.

The whopping number of pilgrims who gathered at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Candles proved once more that Jaro Fiesta is, indeed, one of the most celebrated religious and cultural festivities in the archipelago.

Biblikal man bala ang Piesta?

Many of us live as mere human beings. As long as we are healthy physically – our pockets full enough to take care

of our economic needs – our name socially popular among high class individuals – our name a byword in the intelligent group – we think that going to Mass on Sunday and Holy days of obligation, are all we need to do for God in our life. We have had our trials and failures in the past but we dismiss them simply as natural occurrences.

However, God doesn’t want us to simply take our religious obligations for granted. He doesn’t want our road to salvation to be treated as just one of those things. He wants us to be His disciples, His faithful followers, His apostles, to bring more people to Him and He to more people.

We can read in the Books of Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy and Joshua, how God emphasized reverence, obedience, respect, faith and love due Him, and the heavy punishments He gave to those who contradict His will.

This time, because of too many vices and crimes, God sent us typhoon Yolanda, some fires now and then, and some infectious diseases to make us feel our guilt and our

responsibilities. We must be thankful that all of us, who were spared from these incidents, are given the chance to be more earnest in our purpose to follow the right road and help each other as we go along.

I have observed that the Churches are doing much to hone our piety and our capacity to become disciples of Christ.

Here in Jaro, the clergy and the formators are doing everything they can to improve our faith. Many apostolic groups have been organized through seminars and workshops-charity groups work beyond normal time to give knowledge about and improve faith. Rev. Fr. Nathaniel Gentizon, though hounded by religious occupations, has shouldered the Parish publication, which is a challenge to his energy and endurance. Ushers, readers, choirs, collection-in-charge, altar boys, Eucharistic Ministers, sacristans, helpers, guards, drivers and kitchen aides, they are all disciples of God.

In Sta. Maria Church, Rev. Fr. Joseph Hew, the Parish Priest has issued rules against indecency of attire. No sleeveless dresses, no tight pants; no noisy footwear. There must be silence while Mass is going on. The people join in the hymns and prayers of which copies are

given out. In receiving communion, there is order, and piety. I attended Mass there during Dinagyang Sunday and I met Fr. Hew after the Mass. Truly, he is bringing many souls to more knowledge of God.

Last February 1, I went to participate Mass at the Providence Chapel because I knew that I could not tackle the difficulty in going to the Cathedral the next day. There were more than a hundred people who were at that Mass officiated by Msgr. Maurillo Silva, but the group was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. Even the children were well-behaved. The crowd joined in singing the hymns and saying the prayers. Everything was orderly. Six children took charge of the collection plates and they were adept at doing their duty. After the Mass, the children with their parents, and some church-goers went to offer balloons to Msgr. Silva as they sang. It was his birthday and I greeted him.

There are growing signs that we are getting to be better Christians. Let us throw away our pride and work as disciples of God, Who knows, we will be Apostles of the Lord?

Let us call to mind what Jesus said: “The harvest indeed is great, but the reapers are few.”

Dear Brothers and Sisters,1. On the occasion of the Twenty-

second World Day of the Sick, whose theme this year is Faith and Charity: “We Ought to Lay Down Our Lives for One Another” (1 Jn 3:16), I turn in a special way to the sick and all those who provide them with assistance and care. The Church recognizes in you, the sick, a special presence of the suffering Christ. It is true. At the side of – and indeed within – our suffering, is the suffering of Christ; he bears its burden with us and he reveals its meaning. When the Son of God mounted the cross, he destroyed the solitude of suffering and illuminated its darkness. We thus find ourselves before the mystery of God’s love for us, which gives us hope and courage: hope, because in the plan of God’s love even the night of pain yields to the light of Easter, and courage, which enables us to confront every hardship in his company, in union with him.

2. The incarnate Son of God did not remove illness and suffering from human experience but by taking them upon himself he transformed them and gave them new meaning. New meaning because they no longer have the last word which, instead, is new and abundant life; transformed them, because in union with Christ they need no longer be negative but positive. Jesus is the way, and with his Spirit we can follow him. Just as the Father gave us the Son out of love, and the Son gave himself to us out of the same love, so we too can love others as God has loved us, giving our lives for one another. Faith in God becomes goodness, faith in the crucified Christ becomes the strength to love to the end, even our enemies. The proof of authentic faith in Christ is self-giving and the spreading of love for our neighbours, especially for those who do not merit it, for the suffering and for

the marginalized.3. By virtue of Baptism and Confirmation

we are called to conform ourselves to Christ, who is the Good Samaritan for all who suffer. “We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us – and we ought to lay down our lives for one another” (1 Jn 3:16). When we draw near with tender love to those in need of care, we bring hope and God’s smile to the contradictions of the world. When generous devotion to others becomes the hallmark of our actions, we give way to the Heart of Christ and bask in its warmth, and thus contribute to the coming of God’s Kingdom.

She knows the way, and for this reason she is the Mother of all of the sick and suffering. 5. Saint John, the disciple who stood with Mary beneath the cross, brings us to the sources of faith and charity, to the heart of the God who “is love” (1 Jn 4:8,16). He reminds us that we cannot love God if we do not love our brothers and sisters. Those who stand with Mary beneath the cross learn to love as Jesus does. The cross is “the certainty of the faithful love which God has for us. A love so great that it enters into our sin and forgives it, enters into our suffering and gives us the strength to bear it. It is a love which enters into death to conquer it and to save us… the cross of Christ invites us also to allow ourselves to be smitten by his love, teaching us always to look upon others with mercy and tenderness, especially those who suffer, who are in need of help” (Way of the Cross with Young People, Rio de Janeiro, 26 July 2013).

I entrust this twenty-second World Day of the Sick to the intercession of Mary. I ask her to help the sick to bear their sufferings in fellowship with Jesus Christ and to support all those who care for them. To all the ill, and to all the health-care workers and volunteers who assist them, I cordially impart my Apostolic Blessing.

The Candle Light special issue gives the reader a macro description of what the most popular and most anticipated

fiesta of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria is all about.

Starting with its impressive and eye-catching cover, this year’s theme, “Jareños: Called to be Saints…”, showing part of the thousands of pilgrims and devotees that flocked in the celebration centering on the focal point of the religious fiesta which is the National Shrine of Our Lady of Candles and the well-lighted “Perdons” to the main focus of the celebration which is the statue of our Birhen sang Candelaria with the Sto. Niño in her arms aptly describes what the fiesta is all about.

The opening message of the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Guisseppe Pinto, quoting the encyclical letter, Lumen Fidei of Pope Francis highlighting the Christian Faith centered on the Risen Lord is truly good for everyone. Its light does not brighten simply the interior of the Church, nor does it serve solely to build an eternal city in the hereafter; but it helps us to build our societies in such a way that we can journey towards a future of hope (n.51).

The Year of the Laity which is this year was strongly emphasized by Archbishop Angel N. Lagdameo of Jaro, and Msgr. Higinio Velarde, Parish Priest of Jaro in their messages.

The inside front cover tells the whole story of how and when the National Shrine all started from the year 1521 to 2011 when the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) came out with a decree establishing the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral to become the National Shrine of Our Lady of Candles.

This was followed by Msgr. Alejandro Esperancilla’s very catching and highly motivational “The Lady by the River” analogically summed up, “the Candle is Mary; the Light it gives is Christ.”

The varied and interesting stories and photographs of the National Shrine gives the reader the interest to go on browsing page by page which includes also the history of “Perdon sang Candelaria, “Palapak sa Candelaria”, “Halad”, Schedule of Liturgical Activities, the Order of the Procession of February 2, to a brief introduction of the Fiesta’s King and Queen plus the Childrens
