Happy New yearhappy new year to everyone. This is the first article written in

2020 and the morning after another spectacular new year’s party in our ballroom. It was organized and produced by Jodie nolasco with a Parisian theme. betty Whalen created spectacular centerpieces featuring a lighted eiffel Tower. and oscar and Jackie worked very hard on the decorations. We are lucky to have all these people working together for our enjoyment. Please thank them all.

Budget discussioNWe always appreciate the opportunity to answer questions on

the Canal Walk 2020 budget which everyone has had now for several months. It gives us the opportunity to reinforce the knowledge that we are the leading active adult community in the metropolitan area and in the state of new Jersey, not only with our many activities, but more particularly, in terms of financial management.

by the way, here is how we compare to our neighbors for 2020 monthly maintenance Fees.

somerset run $291 w/o free cable which equates to about $40 more than Canal Walk. renaissance is $370 which is an average of $90 more per month than Canal Walk.

a general word about our philosophy and practice. We have chosen from the beginning to outsource all services to expert providers. While we all treat our management team as if they are our employees, in fact they are not. Therefore, we do not have any associated human resource, payroll management, recruiting, benefit costs issues or adjusting to any new labor laws.

as a result, all contracts we have in place include the salaries of all workers, payroll costs, insurance, vendor overheads and profits. This includes Community management, landscaping/snow, maintenance, Pool management, and security to name the major ones.

We also have the benefits of their expert knowledge in their particular field and using their purchasing power in many cases.

Please remember that questions can be submitted to the board and management at any time on any subject.

advisory paNelWe held our first two meetings with the new advisory Panel in

December. after an organizational meeting, as described last month, the group took on several projects. bob rossomando is leading one group looking at replacing the Club room furniture and other Clubhouse needs. nick Iorio is leading another group regarding Communications and bernie Worst and Jim lyttle are establishing the new special events

Committee which is discussed below. all three groups will be meeting in January and you will be hearing more in the next few months.

special eveNts committeeThis is a new board Committee for which we have had an

outstanding group of people volunteer. The goal of the committee is to provide a broad spectrum of high quality special events, which will appeal to Canal Walk residents. The first meetings were held in January, and they are “well on their way for 2020” and will start planning for 2021 in the next few months. here are the events already scheduled for this year.

• sunday, april 19, 2020 David Wroe nJ Festival with opera/Italian/neapolitan singers

• sunday, June 14, 2020 Duprees Two shows- 3:00Pm and 7:00pm • saturday, september 12, 2020 The Jersey Tenors • saturday, november 7, 2020 Imperial brass

From the enclave BoardeNclave pHase ii coNstructioN

as of this writing, Premier is moving along with constructing the final enclave section. The hamilton, which opened last april, is almost sold out with only one or two condominium units remaining to sell. The Inverness, which opened in December, is also mostly sold out with only five units left to sell. The Jamestown, the last building to be constructed, is moving along with the expectation that Premier will begin to sell those units very soon.

sNow/iceFebruary in new Jersey is known for its freezing temperatures,

snow, and ice. Please exercise caution when walking in the community if sidewalks, driveways, and streets are snow covered or icy. It’s imperative for you to immediately report icy conditions by calling our management office (732-412-7618) during regular business hours, or association advisor’s emergency number (732-422-3349) after business hours.

canal walk refund policy • effective march 1, 2019, the following is a revision to the refund Policy for any and all tickets, trips or reservations made for events arranged by the Clubhouse activities, special events Committee and Trips and Travel Committees and the activity Director.

• once you register and pay for any event or trip, you have the absolute right to admission for that event. There will be no refunds for any reason. The only exception is if there is a wait list which the office may maintain. It is your responsibility to contact the office if you would like them to help you resell your tickets, and to inform the office if you have already sold your place/ticket to another person. This policy is to properly manage our finances and is consistent with almost all performance venues.

• If you cannot use the reservation, you may sell your ticket or right to admission, or give it to someone else. The office should be advised of any changes to the reservation so that we can account for everyone attending.

an email google group Has Been established

This is an email discussion group whereby we can share information, using our own group email address. Currently, more than 800 residents are participating in the group. It has proved to be an efficient method for sharing information pertinent to the community. While having a Gmail email account is suggested, but not required, it does allow group members to view and search past postings.

The purpose of this group is: • To share and receive references or information about vendors,

e.g., “I’m looking for someone to fix...;” “Does anyone know of a good dentist, dressmaker, plumber, etc.”

• To sell, purchase, or borrow items, e.g. “I have a ticket for.... and would like to sell it;” “Can anyone lend me a baby car seat for the weekend, etc.”

• To discuss common issues with our personal property in order to seek other’s opinions and share possible solutions.

The Group is: • NOT a public group (It is for Canal Walk residents only) • NOT for commercial or political purposes • NOT to be used as a soap box or a vehicle to “vent” about the

board, the hoa, or the builder. If you are not yet a member and would like to join the Canal Walk

Google Group, send an email requesting membership to: [email protected]

The December 16 acting uP year end event left them laughing in the aisles. over 100 Canal Walk neighbors and friends braved horrible weather to enjoy this potluck appetizer and dessert evening, with entertainment provided by the Canal Walk acting uP team. The evening included 12 short scenes or vignettes selected from a year’s worth of acting uP meetings. opening the show, bernie Worst and Dom nasto were waiters serving edna stone at a posh ny French restaurant, in a piece called La Mouche (in my soup). sandy siegel played lucy

while Charlie stone was Desi trying to read a children’s book. bruce Davidson played st. George in stan’s Freberg’s parody of Dragnet, “St George and the Dragonet” directed by Gloria stuart. (dum de dum dum). Chocolate featured sandy epstein as a detective investigating “chocolate stains” and the disappearance of betty rivera’s husband. on the serious side, ava Vita and Gail Daly recreated a scene from Lost in Yonkers. act 1 ended with a segment from an old bob & ray show Wise Old Owl featuring sandy e. and bernie.

act II started with the Neighbors, directed by arthur bransdorfer. The story opens at 3 am with marion yudow and bruce (two Peeping Toms) knocking on the door of their neighbors from across the street, Charlie and edna. They barge in wanting to clarify “what they can see and…….complain about what they can’t see”. sandy e and Gloria were two patients finally meeting after months in the same Psychiatrist’s Waiting Room. Zero Visibility featured marion and Gail as two best friends stranded in a car during a snow storm. bernie and Dom returned as two old men sitting and bantering on a park bench from I’m Not Rapaport. Directed by edna, Charlie and ava recreated a scene from Last

of the Red Hot Lovers. Closing the evening were sandy siegel and Gail reviving a musical piece from Chorus Line. The entire production came together with the help of loretta Dimestria as stage manager and beanie lashen providing musical segments during and in between the acts.

If you missed the fun, the entire show was videotaped and is now available on the acting uP youTube channel. In the Clubhouse library, the lionel Train Display opened on December 1 and lasted through January 5. according to the sign-in logbook, 274 names were listed but according to the train engineers, at least twice as many came to see the display that number is more than doubled! We had visitors who would spend ten minutes or more watching the trains go around the three tracks (wondering if there would be a collision), and sometimes people would just peek in to see if the

engineers had changed the train sets. a popular train set was the engine pulling 13 boxcars each one representing the original 13 colonies. other favorites were the barrel loading, and the coal loading cars. The train committee would like to thank the board of Directors, the Canal Walk community (especially the librarians), and all the grandchildren and guests for supporting our first ever train display!

canal walk women’s Bible studyeach Tuesday we are continuing our bible study focusing on

David, the shepherd turned king. We can relate in so many ways because he was definitely not a perfect man, but God had a plan for his life. In spite of all his mistakes, he pursued humility. one statement in our study guide says, “humility doesn’t mean you think less of yourself but that you think of yourself less.” a challenge for all of us as we deal with friends, neighbors and family.

We would love to have you join us on Tuesdays at 4:00 pm in the Club room. This is a Christian bible study, but all faiths are welcome. Feel free to contact Gail or susan if you would like more information. The contact info is: Gail Tornquist at 908-625-0526 or [email protected]; or susan Pohli at 732-412-7223 or [email protected].

government affairsat the first meeting of the Franklin Township Town Council for

2020, an ordinance was amended describing the list of Qualified streets and Qualified street lighting poles on our streets (not the parking lots). being on this list means that the Township will continue to maintain the streets (fixing potholes, cracks, etc.). The township also handles maintenance of the lighting poles but not the lamps themselves. This schedule was last amended november 8, 2018.

at the January 6th meeting, the mayor and three at-large Council members were sworn in. The at-large members (sivaraman anabarsan, kimberly Francois, Crystal Pruitt ) and our 2nd ward Councilman William Galtiere (who continues in his term) are our direct contacts for concerns anyone might have about the Township along with mayor Phil kramer.

The move by the state to ban plastic and paper bags appears stalled in the state legislature. The Franklin Township environmental Commission will now reconsider a local proposal for the ban.

January 1, 2020 – It was a dreary, cold and windy start to the new year. a day that many cuddled up in front of their fireplaces and watched an old movie or read a book. a day that was good for cleaning out a cluttered closet or straightening out the pantry. For others, it was a day to bake some cookies, cook a pot roast, and have some hot soup or a nice hot cup of tea and a scone. but for about 33 of your fellow residents, doing these things did not appeal to them. They did not stay in their houses all snug and warm but decided to participate in the 2nd annual CW Pickleball Polar bear Challenge (see photo). Those of you who lived in one of the boroughs of nyC would know that every new year’s Day regardless of the cold, members of The Polar bear Club jump into the ocean at Coney Island.

last year, I had an idea - instead of jumping into the ocean, why not jump onto the pickleball courts and play some pickleball regardless of the weather. This year’s Polar bear event was run by one of our newer players, steve selvaggio, who did an outstanding job organizing the event. This year, January 1st turned out to be quite cold with wind gusts at about 20 mph and, at times, there were even some scattered snow showers. Donning puffy jackets, hats, gloves, scarves and wearing layers and layers of warm clothes we fought the cold and wind outside on the pickleball courts. Pickleballs were flying this way and that, making for a very difficult game but resulting in lots of laughter and a lot of fun. In addition to the players, there were many spectators at the courts who brought chairs and blankets. one of our players, allan Frost, had his wife Judy, 2 daughters and 4 grandkids there (see attached photo of 3 of them swathed in several blankets cheering on their Poppy). hot cocoa, donuts, snacks and baked goods kept the players warm and fueled. Thanks again to steve for a fun filled afternoon and we look forward to next year’s 3rd annual CW Pickleball Polar bear Challenge.

Tip•of•the•Month•– The next time you play, pick a skill you want to improve and work on it that game. Give yourself a goal – maybe to try to dink or use a soft drop shot instead of just pounding the ball. maybe try to lob the ball or go after a ball instead of just letting it pass you by. The only way to improve your game is to improve your skills.

Please contact stan spector ([email protected]) or me, leslie Goldenberg ([email protected]) for more information concerning indoor play or anything pickleball.

I didn’t hear from a lot of you, but it really was 50/50 about keeping or dropping the landline.

some dropped it to save the expense while one person said it made them feel modern to live with cell phones only.

Two people said it was like an old friend and couldn’t picture their house without it. While I can see both sides of this issue, it’s important to discuss one thing that looms large when you don’t have a landline. It has been our experience that when you call 911 from your home phone they immediately know who and where you are. some cell phone are GPs equipped and can give a dispatcher a very good but not exact location when you call. If that’s the case you must give clear concise information when calling for help. I suggest you call your cell phone provider and find out what information your cell phone provides in an emergency.

When it comes time to put my article together for the newsletter, I can always depend on the scammers to provide a few fresh new ideas. here are a few recent ones…

I received this email from “[email protected]”Dear [email protected],You have successfully purchased Nonstop Knight - Idle RPG -

Enter a dungeon adventure on the App Store. See your payment details in the PDF attachment shown in your email or request cancellation of your order. Apple Store

When I clicked the attachment, it came back with a warning “you should only preview files from a trustworthy site.” Well, that was enough for me. This is a perfect example of a site that is not trustworthy. so I deleted the email. but I will watch my Visa bill for the next few months to make sure I didn’t buy the dungeon adventure.

* * *here’s another one ….It comes from “Customer service [noreplyscs.supportids

[email protected]]”Greetings from AmazonWe have placed a hold on your Amazon account and all pending

orders. We took this action the billing information you provided did not match the information on file with the card issuer. To resolve this issue, please verify now with the billing name, address, and telephone number registered to your payment card. if you have recently moved, you may need to update this information with the card issuer. If we are unable to complete the verification process within 3 days, all pending orders will be cancelled. You will not be able to access your account until this process has been completed. We ask that you not open new accounts as any new order you place may be delayed.

now your hint that it may be a scam comes from the From address. look at the script after “Customer service”. Does that look like an amazon address? so don’t click the VerIFy icon, just delete the email and move on.

* * *on the other hand, if you get an email like this …Dear•Howard•Kliger, We noticed that you weren’t taking full advantage of your Prime

Membership. As•a•Prime•Member,•you•get•exclusive•access•to•Prime•Music,•an•ad-free•music•streaming•service•at•no•additional•cost. Listen to over two million hand-curated songs, plus thousands of playlists and stations online, on an Amazon Echo device, or on your mobile device with the Amazon Music app. Enjoy music anytime, anywhere -- at home, the office, the gym, or on-the-go -- it’s all included in your membership.

The From address is “amazon.com [[email protected].]”. The message is positive – not a dire warning – and the address

is from amazon.com. This is a genuine email from amazon. Feel free to click on the addressable link that is imbedded in the massage.

Finally, here’s a disturbing thought. how many of you have alexa? That’s that little cylindrical device that you connect to your internet service and when you say “alexa, play some classical music” it responds with a mozart sonata or something like that. or ask it for the weather in Philadelphia, and it responds with the current temperature and precipitation level.

but it may be listening to you when you are not asking it anything. suppose you are talking about buying a new washing machine. and tomorrow morning, there is an email from amazon advertising washing machines that can be purchased through amazon. yes, amazon is listening to you. or suppose you are discussing beach umbrellas and tomorrow morning there is an email from amazon describing beach umbrellas. yep, amazon is listening to you…..

and tomorrow morning, if your email has amazon ads for marital aids……… then it’s time to move that damn alexa into the living room.

There was no monthly Challenge for December 2019 so there are no pictures to highlight. however, the shutterbugs have a nice habit of emailing around some of their recent photos, so presented here are a few samples, by angela Johns, Debbie stuart, David reissman, and Phil Witt. With winter upon us, shutterbugs brave the weather and continue to look for photo ops in the surrounding areas.

proJects:a new project was started by hank Goldenberg, David reissman,

rich debella, and mitch benveniste, to create a shutterbugs Camera buyer’s Guide. This will help shutterbugs who are using primarily smartphone cameras now to explore what features are available in dedicated cameras such as point and shoot, consumer Dslr, mirrorless, professional-consumer (called pro-sumer) and professional systems.

pHoto tip oF tHe moNtHone way to improve one’s photographic skills is to study the work

of the “masters”, find images that you especially like, think about the reasons that you like the images, and apply these ideas to your own compositions. Just type “famous photographers” into the search field of your favorite internet search engine.

the third monday of each month except september and December in the ballroom of the CW Clubhouse. CW residents interested in photography are encouraged to join the shutterbugs. membership forms are available from Debbie stuart [email protected].

you caN sHare, sometimesmost of Fluffy’s diet should be a nutritionally complete cat food,

but you can give her a treat from your plate every once in a while. you just need to know how to choose feline-friendly snacks with nutrients she needs. Cats are meat eaters, plain and simple. They have to have protein from meat for a strong heart, good vision, and a healthy reproductive system. Cooked beef, chicken, turkey, and small amounts of lean deli meats are a great way to give them that. raw or spoiled meat could make Fluffy sick. If you wouldn’t eat it, don’t give it to her. Whole grains, like oats, have a lot of protein per calorie, and they’re easy to make. many cats like corn, polenta, a coarsely ground cornmeal, brown rice, barley, and wheat berries, but you need to mash them first. Cats tend to like smaller grains like millet, couscous and whole wheat breadcrumbs. We all know

Fluffy loves fish and for a reason. Fish have a lot of omega-3 fatty acids, which help your cat’s eyes stay sharp as well as help with arthritis, kidney disease, and heart disorders. Canned or cooked fish is fine for a treat. but no sushi for her! raw fish isn’t a good idea. eggs (cooked only) are another super source of protein for Fluffy. not all cats like vegetables, and even fewer like fruits (felines can’t taste sweet flavors). but veggies are a rich source of vitamins, and they’re loaded with fiber and water to help with digestion. Try fresh cucumber or cantaloupe, steamed broccoli, or asparagus. having a veggie burger for lunch? Fluffy may like it but make sure it doesn’t include onions or garlic. be careful with cheese (a high-protein snack that’s fine for your cat in small amounts), but many cats’ tummies can’t handle dairy, so go easy on the cheesy treats, and skip the saucer of milk. paiN medicatioNs For FidoIf you notice Fido isn’t quite himself lately, it could be because

he’s in pain. he could have an injury, an infection, or a disease. or maybe he’s starting to feel the aches of aging. Don’t try to guess what his problem may be. Visit your vet to find out what’s wrong. your vet will recommend medication based on what’s going on and your dog’s health history. nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or nsaIDs, help reduce swelling, stiffness, and joint pain in humans, and they can do the same for Fido. They can bring relief to a dog with arthritis, or one who’s just had surgery. but don’t give Fido something from your medicine cabinet. There are some of the available nsaIDs just for dogs: novox, rimadyl, Deramaxx, Previcox, metacam. nsaIDs are usually safe for dogs and have few side effects. but in some cases, they can cause kidney, liver, or digestive problems. how to tell if Fido is having a bad reaction to an nsaID? an easy way to remember the signs is with the word BEST: Behavior changes, Eating less, Skin redness/scabs, Tarry stool/diarrhea/vomiting. If you spot these symptoms, stop giving your dog the drug and call the vet. aspirin is an over-the-counter nsaID. It may be ok giving it to Fido for a limited amount of time, but usually only if he has an injury or another short-term condition. It’s not recommended for long-term use in dogs because it has a greater potential for side effects, including the risk of bleeding. Coated aspirin is best on the stomach, so give the pills with food. Talk to your vet and follow her recommendations on how much and how often. What about supplements? Glucosamine and chondroitin are very popular alternative treatments. It’s not clear if they help, but some research has found that they may make swelling go down, help cartilage repair itself and also may help protect and lubricate existing cartilage. again, ask the vet and always discuss before giving Fido any meds/supplements. ask for a written copy of the treatment plan, as well as instructions (and a demonstration) for how to give the meds to Fido. you may not be able to relieve all of Fido’s pain, but you should be able to make him feel better. read more about other pet meds at www.WebMD.com.

staying HealthycaN JoiNts aNd kNees tHat acHe really

predict weatHer cHaNges? For as long as I have been married, my husband has always

predicted the weather. of course, one does have to realize that he was an aerographer’s mate (a weatherman) in the u.s. navy, but it wasn’t his education that told him that a storm was brewing. no, it was his appendix scar from years ago. you see, it would itch, he would say. now more research has been done whether this type of thing is just an old wives’ tale or does it have real merit?

according to an article put out by the Health Realizations, Inc.2019, for centuries, people have wondered if weather has an impact on one’s health. as early as 2,400 years ago, the Greeks were making note of the effect that hot and cold winds might have on pain and illness. During the Civil War, physicians were writing about amputee soldiers sensing pain in their “phantom” limbs when the weather was changing.

so, it’s no surprise today that doctors still ponder the connection between weather and pain. In fact, a lot of research has gone into trying to figure out exact scientific mechanisms that bring about this kind of weather-related pain.

many studies have explored the relationship between weather changes, like barometric pressure, temperature, humidity and joint pain and the majority of these researchers do agree that there is “a very definite maybe!” according to Dr. hayes Wilson, mD, chair of rheumatology at Piedmont hospital in atlanta, “The weather making joints hurt is more than just a myth. I see it in my patients who experience morning stiffness and have red, hot, swollen and painful joints when a front is approaching.”

according to kevin robinson, a meteorologist with the Weather Channel in atlanta, he, too, has been quoted as saying, “When people feel pain during a weather change, it is often not precipitation or humidity causing the problem, but changing barometric pressure. as storms approach, barometric pressure – the weight exerted by air – falls, resulting in many people experiencing an increase in aches and pains. a decrease in barometric pressure may make inflamed joints swell, which in theory, could stretch the thin tissue lining the capsule surrounding a joint.” other doctors claim that their patients experienced a significant increase in arthritic pain between fall and spring, when more storms occur, and a significant decrease in pain from spring to fall, when weather is typically calmer.

There are some scientists, however, who dispute this theory. some think it is all psychological. “some may blame their pain on the weather to help relieve the thinking that they have any control of the pain they might be experiencing. attitudes like this may develop unconsciously, and the link between pain and weather would seem like a simple cause-and-effect relationship.” For example, if a person believes that rain causes pain, that fact alone can trigger the psychological link with pain.

Whether or not you experience an increase in pain when the weather is taking a turn, you can use the following sources to help plan a special event.

AccuWeather.com has an online service called the “arthritis Index.” here you will find a ranking of the potential severity of weather-related arthritis pain from low to extreme.

Weather.com also offers a health section where frequent pain sufferers can go to find out the level of “aches and pains” that might be experienced in their area in their featured “aches and pains” index.

you might not be able to change the weather, but you definitely can change how weather affects you. For me? I’ll just rely on my husband’s navy education and his appendix scar to warn me of impending bad weather! Nina Pesce

restaurant review Joe’s meat market

28 Main Street, South Bound Brook, NJ • phone: 732-356-4557on the off chance that some of our Canal Walk neighbors have not

experienced lunch or dinner at Joe’s meat market or had the benefit of enjoying their catering services, I decided to review their wonderful offerings.

my husband and I recently stopped in for lunch and as always were delighted with our selections.

Their sandwiches are probably the best, freshest and most generous sandwiches you could ever hope for. one of our favorites is the Prosciutto with mozzarella and roasted red peppers served with balsamic vinegar on a sub roll. They list over 25 over stuffed sandwiches priced from $6 for a half sub to $15 for a whole sub. They really are over stuffed as advertised so generally a half sub is almost too much for one person. every ingredient is very fresh and delicious.

They have an extensive menu serving a huge variety of meats and pastas, all homemade and, from what we have ordered, absolutely delicious. They are wonderful caterers and have an extensive menu both hot and cold. In the front of the store they have a pizzeria, known as Giovanni’s Pizzeria. They make 23 different varieties of Pizza which are very good. They are open from 7am to 9pm monday thru Thursdays. Friday and saturday they are open 7am to 10pm. sundays they are open from 8am to 8pm. you may have guessed that they are open every day for breakfast and they have a great breakfast menu as well. The atmosphere is a friendly deli atmosphere with about maybe 6 tables but not a dining atmosphere for a special night.

It’s all about the food there....great food, both Italian (real mama mia home cooking) and great american food as well (Filet mignon, Prime rib, burgers, Grilled salmon, shrimp scampi etc) everything is reasonably priced with top quality ingredients at all times. The lunch menu costs less than the dinner menu. For example shrimp scampi is $11 at lunch and $14 for dinner.

hope anyone who goes to Joe’s enjoys the food as much as we do!Submitted by: Ellen Catalina

Today, television is so much a part of our lives that is difficult to remember that it first became available less than 75 years ago. Many of us at Canal Walk recollect those early days of TV and even the “Radio Days “that preceded them. Recently, I spoke to Ken and Barbara Morrison about those times and this is what they told me.

Ken: In the days before TV, listening to radio was a family experience, almost a formal one. kids would come home for supper after playing outside all day and, afterwards, the whole family would gather in the living room to listen to the radio. kids would sit on the floor chin in hand, parents would sit in chairs and we would all look at the radio as we listened. as we listened, we visualized the action and gave our imaginations free rein. In some ways, it was almost better than TV. When TVs first went on sale, few people were able to afford them. The first time most people saw a TV program was on the television sets in storefronts; the shop owners kept them switched on all the time to attract the public. our neighbor was one of the early owners of a TV and we kids often took advantage. Ten or twelve of us would stand on his lawn and watch through the open window; the screen was small but had a magnifying attachment and we could follow the action easily.

Barbara: Those first TV sets were huge, more like a piece of furniture, even though the screen was only ten or twelve inches. admiral and rCa were the big names then. We got our first TV set

when I was in grammar school, around 1953 and it was a Zenith. It was black and white, of course, and reception was sometimes iffy. Those living in apartments had” rabbit ears” atop the set that had to be adjusted to get a good signal; home owners had more elaborate rooftop antennas. and, needless to say, remotes were yet to be invented. some of the early shows I liked: Orson Welles Mercury Theater, the Arthur Godfrey Show, Green Hornet and Father Knows Best. also, since I came home for lunch when I was in grammar school, I became a fan of the soap Guiding Light.

Ken: In those early days, TV was not the 24 hour service we now have. Programming began at 6am and continued till 10 pm, later expanding to 12 midnight and still later to 2 in the morning. Initially, there were three national networks (Cbs, nbC and abC; channels 2, 4 and 7) supplemented by three local channels( 5,7 and 11). Pbs came a little later. as far as programming goes, it was an age of experimentation, of trial and error, programming executives tried to determine what the public

really wanted. That turned out to be variety shows, science fiction, westerns, sports, sitcoms, animal shows (Lassie, Rin Tin Tin) and crime dramas. news programs were initially limited but were considerably expanded after the 1962-63 newspaper strike that left radio and TV as the only source of news. my favorite shows included Bonanza, The Lone Ranger, Dragnet, The FBI in Peace and War, and Lassie. and, as a sports fan, I got my fill of basketball, football and baseball on TV.

Barbara: my favorite TV genres were variety shows and talent shows, beginning with The Arthur Godfrey Show and sid Caesar’s Show of Shows and continuing on with The Ed Sullivan Show. I also enjoyed sitcoms like I Love Lucy and The Honeymooners; they were based on real life, were funny, light hearted and innocent, and made you feel good even as they carried a message. no wonder they are popular in re-runs even today.

Ken: after we were married, our TV watching was drastically reduced. I was very busy with work and both barb and I were very busy bringing up the children. at times, it seemed like we were watching only cartoons and kids’ shows. by the way, the cartoons were really funny then, unlike those on TV today. after I retired, our TV watching has picked up again. mostly, I watch nature shows (which I think are fabulous), sports and specials.

Barbara: as ken said, there was a period in our lives when we didn’t have much time for TV. I did however enjoy the late night talk shows, particularly Johnny Carson who I think was in a class by himself and some series like MASH. nowadays, I like watching Blue Bloods (with Tom selleck), game shows and soaps. Guiding Light may be a thing of the past but The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful are two shows I still like to watch. some things never change.

wHat cats tHiNk, wHat cats doaccording to the

2017-2018 national Pet owners survey, there are an estimated 94.2 million cats and 89.7 million dogs in america. That there are more cats than dogs in the u.s has always been a bit of a surprise to me because dogs are so much more visible particularly here at Canal Walk. but then I guess I shouldn’t be. Dogs prefer the outdoors while cats prefer to stay in. In many other ways too, cats are the polar opposites of dogs. Dogs are outgoing and eager to please, cats mysterious and aloof. here is what some cat owners have to say about their pets.

• In ancient times, cats were worshipped as gods. They have never forgotten.

• Dogs have owners. Cats have staff. • If cats could text you back, they wouldn’t. • Don’t tell me what to do. you’re not my cat. • If the earth was flat, cats would push everything off it. • If sleeping was an olympic sport, my cat would win the gold. • Cats spend half their time sleeping, the other half making viral

videos. • bathing cats is a martial art. • I dressed my dog as a cat. now he won’t come when I call him. • letting the cat out of the bag is easier than putting it back in.

Valentine’s Day, which is celebrated every year on February 14th was declared in the year 496.

Pope Gelasius called it saint Valentine’s Day in order to separate the church from the roman celebration of lupercalia which was an ancient pagan fertility festival taking place on February 15th. saint Valentine’s Day was named after one or possibly more saints named Valentinus. In the middle ages the tradition of courtly love was flourishing and that is when Valentines’ day became associated with romantic love. In 18th century england this day evolved into a special day which lovers expressed their love for each other by giving candy, flowers and sending Valentine cards.

national organ Donors Day is also celebrated on February 14th. What could be a greater expression of love than donating lifesaving organ tissues, bone marrow, platelets or blood?

national Donor Day was initiated in 1998 by the saturn Corporation and its united auto Workers partners along with the support of the u.s. Department of health and human services and many non-profit health organizations.

If you are interested in becoming an organ donor of any kind you can visit: donatelifenw.org. Submitted by Ellen Catalina

The film, Parasite, just won the Golden Globe for best motion Picture - Foreign language. Its director, bong hoon Jo, was also nominated for best Director and best screenplay. I suggest you keep an eye out for the oscar nominations because I guarantee this movie will appear among them. It’s difficult to pigeonhole this film in any one category because it is so unique. I’ve seen it described as a tragicomedy, a term I’ve rarely seen used since studying shakespeare. other phrases that seem to fit are dark comedy, suspense thriller, and drama.

To begin with, the entire dialogue, with the exception of a few snippets, is in korean, requiring the audience to read subtitles. I realize that this would put some off, but I can only say that, in my opinion, as with the netflix best foreign movie oscar winner Roma, the effort is well worth it. The action takes place in and was filmed in korea and it’s a tale of two korean families. In one sense these two families couldn’t be more different, in another, they share some of the same foolishness.

The first family is a feckless bunch of self-described losers, living in a squalid, messy basement apartment in a slum area. They are largely preoccupied with stealing WiFi, from nearby businesses, folding pizza boxes for a few bucks, and lamenting their lack of luck in the form of gainful employment. They consist of a father and mother and a young daughter and son, both college age, but neither enrolled. each of them has a distinct personality but one common trait, a certain larcenous tendency.

The film begins with a demonstration of their cheesy lifestyle which, as it develops, gets more and more humorous.

The second family, the Parks, is a wealthy one, mother and father and a teenage daughter and terribly spoiled little boy. They live in a mansion built by and for a famous architect who moved on to Paris. Their follies consist of casual materialism (not that the other family doesn’t share this trait), status consciousness, and obsession with everything trendy with elites. They are also, as the plot develops, shown to be cluelessly gullible in the face of the ever resourceful family number one.

as luck would have it the loser family, low on money but not lacking in cleverness and other skills, manages to inveigle themselves, step by step into the lives of the Park family. like the beverly hillbillies, they come to enjoy their newfound statuses in a series of scenes which become funnier and funnier, while at the same time producing a genuine sense of suspense in an audience that doesn’t know where this is all going. a bit like watching a tightrope walker, waiting for the fall. Will there be a fall? you have

to see the film to find out.The movie is beautifully filmed and skillfully made by a director

who knew what he was doing. This film satirizes much of our modern life which we have in

common with koreans and much more of the world: the obsession with electronic devices, WiFi and the ubiquitous cell phones, without which much of the fraudulent schemes in the film wouldn’t be possible. It also satirizes distinctions of class and infatuation with status.

at various points in the film there is sheer hilarity, at one point producing a scene like those in a classic bedroom farce. yet, an air of suspense prevails through much of the film’s 2 hour and 12 minute length. The plot takes many and various twists and turns for which the viewer is consistently unprepared and surprised. For that reason I can’t in good conscience reveal more detail than I have.

see it and be surprised yourself. The film is rated r By Frank Catalina
