Automobile engines had priming cups over each cylinder which had to be filled with gasoline that had been purchased in five gallon tin cans. Drivers would open the petcocks to let the fuel drip into the cylinders, set the hand controls for spark and throttle and then pray that the engine would start on the first turn with the crank. That was seldom the case. Cold weather starting was another matter. Before antifreeze, motorists would drain the water out of their cars after using them so radiators and engine blocks wouldn’t freeze and crack. Then they had to fill radiators with water before attempting to start the vehicle again. In extreme cold there are stories of motorists starting small fires under their engine crankcase to heat the oil to make starting possible. Most automobiles of 1912 were open vehicles with folding canvas tops. Only clip-on side curtains kept the weather out and the cellulose windows would fog up, becoming a danger for drivers trying to see what was coming at them. Kia unveiled the Track’ster concept at the recent Chicago Auto Show.

Amid the driving rhythm of heavy-metal music, smoke and blinding lights, Kia Motors America took the wraps off a performance-oriented three-door Soul coupe concept that hints at what could possibly be the future of Kia’s wildly successful Soul.

The Track’ster is not just another pretty face; it has a body to match. Sculpted surfaces seem to flow into each other naturally. The flanks are smooth but accented with well-defined wheel enclosures.

The wheelbase on the concept is stretched to 101.2-inches, almost an inch longer than the production Soul. As expected on a car with the Track’ster’s performance intentions, large 14-inch Brembo vented and cross-drilled disc brakes are embraced by six-piston calipers up front and 13.6-inch discs are paired with four-piston calipers at the rear.

A 2.0-litre turbocharged in-line-four engine puts 250 horsepower to the road, a 66 per cent increase over that of the production Soul.

Power is routed to all four wheels via an electronically controlled four-wheel-drive system. The short-throw six-speed manual transmission is capped with a stubby spherical shift lever. The Track’ster rides on a lowered sport suspension tuned for track performance.

The new Aston Martin V12 Zagato revealed

The £330,000 (plus local taxes) Aston Martin V12 Zagato production car will be shown at the coming Geneva Motor Show.

MEtRolanD MEDiaCaRguiDE MagazinE

With the final design signed-off and engineering development work progressing apace, Aston Martin has revealed the first images of the new

V12 Zagato (road car) scheduled for production later this year.

It will have a price of £330,000, plus local taxes.

The V12 Zagato is the pinnacle of the Vantage range. It is also the latest expression of a successful creative

collaboration that has given rise to a series of striking GT cars over the last half-century, the original and most iconic of which being the DB4GT Zagato. Not only does this masterpiece rank among the most desirable, collectable and valuable

cars in history, but its 50th anniversary also provided the inspiration for the V12 Zagato.

Built at Aston Martin’s global headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire, production of the V12 Zagato will be strictly limited to no more than 150 cars.

Creating each V12 Zagato is a painstaking process that takes approximately 2,000 man-hours to complete. Just like the One-77, the V12 Zagato is constructed from a combination of hand-crafted aluminum and carbon fibre.

Look closely because the Kia Track’ster concept gives a good idea of what the next vehicle in the Soul lineup may look like.

haze and fog that hung in the air for much of the year. This was pollution caused by coal and sawdust-burning furnaces coupled with industrial emissions from mills and factories right in the city.

“I remember driving down Arbutus Street in the 1950s when you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face,” says Peter Trant, whose passion is restoring century-old vehicles. “You could hear the foghorn blowing day after day at Point Atkinson because of the fog and pollution. It made it very difficult for motorists to see anything.”

‘Automobilists’ and passengers had to dress for motoring to keep warm in winter and to keep the road grime off their clothing. Horse dung dried on the roads and rose as dust thrown up by automobiles, carts and carriages. Motoring apparel included hats, dusters, capes, boots, scarves, gloves and goggles. Without protective clothing, motorists would arrive at their destination absolutely filthy.

City roads had dust, mud and ruts, while suburban roads were often crude paths through the forest with no road signs or clear markings for passing points. Farmers were often employed to use their horses to drag bogged down automobiles to solid ground.

Automobiles in 1912 often carried two spare tires. Many didn’t have demountable rims. Motorists with punctures and flat tires would have to take the tire off the rim like a bicycle wheel, patch the inner tube by the side of the road, then get all the rings and locks in place to remount the tire without puncturing the tube again and then pump up the tire to 60 psi with a hand pump.

Night driving was challenging with few street lamps in the cities and none in the country. Vehicle headlamps had acetylene burners that needed to be lit and adjusted for proper combustion. Tail lamps and side lamps burned kerosene and were often left burning at

night to help others see parked vehicles.Collisions between vehicles could

be catastrophic because there were no passenger restraints or safety glass. Occupants could be thrown through plate glass windshields.

Motorcar maintenance was excessive and daily tasks were often recommended by manufacturers. Cleaning was unending with nickel and brass radiators, lamps and accessories to be polished.

Peter Trant’s 1912 Kissel Kar is an example of what would be considered extravagant and radical motoring a century ago. The giant 500 cubic inch, six cylinder engine providing 60 horsepower coupled to an industry leading four-speed overdrive transmission could propel the semi-racer automobile at speeds approaching 60 miles per hour. All this in a two-seat vehicle with no additional room for even a suitcase.

It 1911, the year before Trant’s Kissel Kar was built in Hartford, Wisconsin, Ray Harroun won the first running of the Indianapolis 500 race in his Marmon Wasp. His average speed was 74.6 miles per hour. The top speed of motorcars on urban dirt roads a century ago was about 20 miles per hour.

Motoring would become a lot easier in 1913. For that model year, most manufacturers adopted the ‘automatic’ electric starter that had been pioneered

by Cadillac the year before. Closed cars with roll-up windows would soon become more popular and all weather motoring with ventilation and heaters gradually became commonplace.

These developments enabled longer distance driving which encouraged the building of new safer roads, some with hard surfaces. New road and vehicle safety features made motoring more practical and more comfortable than 100 years ago.

For the first time ever, the Vancouver International Auto Show will give away two brand new vehicles in this year’s Dream Car Lottery.

One lucky winner will have the opportunity

2012 Dream Car Lottery to give away two luxury vehiclesOne lucky ticket buyer will win both a BMW X5 Diesel and Z4 Roadster

to experience two world-class vehicles, the BMW X5 Diesel and BMW Z4 Roadster, with a combined value of more than $145,000.

Proceeds from the lottery will benefit various charities, non-profit and sport organizations supported by the New Car Dealers Foundation of BC.

The Dream Car Lottery is part of the 92nd annual Vancouver International Auto Show, coming to BC Place Stadium April 2 to 8.

“We’re thrilled to be able to exceed British Columbians’ expectations in 2012 by offering not one, but two luxury vehicles as the grand prize for the Vancouver International Auto Show’s third annual Dream Car Lottery,” said Blair Qualey, President of the New Car Dealers Association of BC and Director of New Car Dealers Foundation of BC.

“The lottery also allows the New Car Dealers Foundation of BC to support integral local community initiatives and organization throughout the province of British Columbia including the Special Olympics.”

Partial lottery proceeds will benefit Special Olympics BC to help further the organization’s work to provide individuals with intellectual disabilities with opportunities to enhance their life and celebrate personal achievement through positive sport experiences.

The BMW X5 Diesel is sophisticated in power and outstanding in efficiency with precise and powerful driving dynamics. It has an inline six-cylinder turbo engine and is praised throughout the industry as being one of the best-driving best-handling SUV’s on the market.

The BMW Z4 Roadster’s sleek-styling, high-class interior and high-speed performance combine to make it one of the most desirable luxury roadsters available. It generates 335 horsepower and 332 lbs-ft of torque while the seven-speed sport automatic double clutch transmission and straight six-cylinder engine accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in five seconds.

This year’s lottery will also offers a second prize, a VIP experience package to the 2012 Monaco Grand Prix. Widely considered to be one of the most important and prestigious automobile races in the world, this prize is valued at approximately $10,000.

Tickets for the Dream Car Lottery are now on sale and are $20 each, or four for $50. Tickets can be ordered online at www.VancouverInternationalAutoShow.com until April 2.

Tickets are then available on site only at this year’s 92nd annual Vancouver International Auto Show.

The Dream Car Lottery will be drawn on April 10.

The official launch of SVT came during the 1992 Chicago Auto Show with the unveiling of the 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra and SVT F-150 Lightning.

Now Ford returned to Chicago to celebrate its past and look to the future with the 2013 Shelby GT500 convertible.

In honour of SVT’s anniversary, a commemorative lighted sill plate will be used in the 2013 Shelby GT500 to celebrate the many years of performance vehicles.

The 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra offered a 235-horsepower 5.0-litre V8 engine, which demonstrates just how far the products have come in 20 years. The 2013 Shelby GT500 with its 650 hp V8 marks the latest offering from

one of the oldest and most successful automotive performance groups in the world.

The 2013 Shelby GT500 convertible with the optional Performance Package is faster around a track than the outgoing model. The new convertible shaved nearly 3.5 seconds off its lap time at Sebring International Raceway compared to the 2011 and 2012 models.

Keys to the improved lap times are the power boost from the new 5.8-litre supercharged V8 producing 650 horsepower, as well as the SVT-designed Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers available on the Performance Package and the all-new chassis tuning.

Accessed on the dash with a simple push of a button, normal mode gives customers a more comfortable ride over road irregularities.

Sport mode is all about performance, delivering improved response time on the track and less body roll while cornering with reduced pitch under braking.

The upgraded dampers allowed SVT engineers to tune the convertible more aggressively for the track, while still being able to maintain desirable on-road manners.

A new Brembo brake system also is a key enabler in boosting the performance of the convertible. The new brakes offer drivers enhanced stopping power to help keep their car under control, while new six-piston calipers in front along with larger front and rear rotors further improve braking performance. More aggressive brake pads also help the car achieve high deceleration and further robustness for more driver confidence.

2013 Ford Shelby GT500 convertible helps SVT mark 20 years of high-performance vehicles

The 2013 Shelby GT500 convertible offers an astounding 650 hp V8.

The Mopar brand will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2012.

Starting as the name of a single product (anti-freeze), the Mopar brand evolved over 75 years, developing a strong identity that represents authentic parts and accessories, expert service and convenient car care.

Today, Mopar is building on its reputation for top-quality, trusted service and high performance.

The Mopar brand was officially trademarked in 1937 at a meeting of the Chrysler Parts Corporation’s Activities Council in Highland Park, Mich. The committee mulled over a list of names for the anti-freeze product, coming up with “MoPar,” for the words MOtor and PARts.

Mopar became a brand name for most Chrysler Corporation parts, and gradually evolved into the name of the parts business itself. The moniker was officially attached to a Chrysler parts organization in the late 1960s, when Chrysler created an aftermarket business unit named the Mopar Division.

With Chrysler Group LLC’s partnership with Fiat S.p.A, Mopar continues to expand its global footprint. In 2011, Mopar opened operations in Shanghai and Dubai along with Mopar Express Lanes in the Middle East. The brand started showcasing its vast product portfolio at international auto shows including Frankfurt and Bologna.

And to support the North American launch of the new Fiat 500, Mopar introduced more than 150 quality-tested accessories.

General Motors remains the No. 1 innovator for the fourth-consecutive quarter among 183 companies ranked by The Patent Board in its quarterly automotive and transportation industry scorecard.

GM was granted 1,123 U.S. patents in 2011 applied to global product engineering, global powertrain engineering, global research and

development and OnStar organizations. The Patent Board is the leading

independent provider of best practices research tools and metrics for patent analysis and intellectual property investment. It tracks and analyzes innovation and patents across 17 industries on a global basis.

Among recent technology patents:• Quiet Brakes – A friction-damped

disc brake design that uses a thin metal ring embedded in the brake rotor to absorb vibrations and mute the squeal. The quieter brake is expected to be available on some cars and trucks within two to three years.

• OnStar Voice Recognition – OnStar’s speech recognition method can identify the location of the speaker within the vehicle and adjusts its microphone pick-

up pattern or magnitude to respond to location-specific commands.

• eAssist Thermal Management – Vehicles with engine shut-off capability, such as Buick LaCrosse with eAssist, use an innovative thermal management system that maintains occupant comfort during engine-shut off and prevents engine shut-off if comfort will be lost, such as during very cold or hot weather.
