That was more than 40 years ago. The truck received rough use on the farm north of Edmonton for many years before being parked by the shop in 1979. It would not move again for the next three decades. Beard was 18 years old when he “factory ordered” the truck. “In those days, four wheel drives were a very rare commodity,” he recalls. A neighbour used a Dodge Power Wagon 4X4 to go hunting year-round and introduced Brian to four wheeling when he was 14. “Every Sunday in the winter, my neighbour went hunting in deep snow through ditches, plowed fields and bush. This was my introduction to the amazing things a four wheel drive could do. After my first ride, I had to have one.” When Brian got his driver’s license at 16, he started a small oilfield hauling business after school and on weekends with an old pickup which eventually fell apart. Then in Grade 12, he convinced his father that he should buy a new truck – a 4X4 because used 4X4 trucks were usually worn out. Dealers didn’t stock 4X4 trucks in those days, so, with $500 of hard-earned savings and an agreement with the bank to make payments of $107 a month, he ordered his new truck, a Mercury M250. The $4,000 price tag for the four wheel drive was twice that of a regular three- quarter ton pickup. In Canada, Ford trucks were sold by Ford dealers and the same trucks re- badged as Mercury models were sold Rare ‘67 Mercury pickup left derelict for 30 years returned to original owner after complete restoration Brian Beard with the Mercury 4X4 pickup he purchased new that was returned to him after being completely restored by his cousin, who had used it on his Alberta farm. Selective modifications in design and innovative equipment features have honed the profile of the 2012 BMW X6 as a distinctive model within the premium segment of all-wheel-drive automobiles.

Since its market launch, more than 150,000 of the X6 Sporty Activity Coupe (SAC) were sold within approximately three years. This far exceeded the original plans.

Precisely modified details in the front view give the new BMW X6 an appearance characterized by exclusive athleticism and supremacy.

The standard fog lights are now set in matt finish surrounds in the upper area of the outer air inlets.

As an alternative to the standard bi-xenon light, the new BMW X6 is the first vehicle in its segment to be fitted optionally with adaptive LED headlamps.

Their bright white light ensures optimum visibility, while their high-quality appearance represents a new interpretation of the brand’s hallmark twin circular headlamps.

The standard equipment range of the new BMW X6 also includes 19-inch light alloy wheels. In the eight-cylinder model BMW X6 xDrive 50i these now feature a new double spoke design in bi-colour.

The selection of light alloy wheels available as an option is supplemented with a 20-inch version in Y-spoke, bi-colour design.

The luggage compartment volume of the Sports Activity Coupe is 570 litres and can be extended to up to 1,450 litres by folding down the rear backrests.

As an additional option, the M Sport Edition is offered for the new BMW X6 in Germany. This attractive equipment package includes 20-inch M light alloy wheels in double spoke design and bi-colour finish with mixed tires, adaptive LED headlamps, BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line, black surrounds for the fog lights and M door sill cover strips.

Unique – and now more exceptional than ever: the new BMW X6

BMW has made a number of design changes on the 2012 X6, including new optional adaptive LED headlights.

by Mercury dealers. The last Mercury truck was produced in March 1968. Brian estimates that there were only about 125 of the three-quarter ton Mercury 4X4 built in the 1967 model year.

He ordered his truck to be as special and heavy duty as possible, with the Custom Cab option, Spicer free running front hubs, a 352 cubic inch V8 engine, four-speed transmission, two-tone paint, cab lights, AM radio and a front bush bar.

His truck was built at the Ford Twin Cities truck plant in April 1967. As the arrival day got closer, young Brian would stop by the railyard to see if his truck had arrived. One day in early May, there it sat on top of a rail car, just as he had ordered it.

“Wherever I went with my truck, people would remark that it was the prettiest truck they had ever seen,” he says. “The truck and I went on many adventures. But working and going to high school was one thing. Going to university with the cost of fees and books along with all the studying made it impossible to keep my truck.”

The young engineering student worked out a plan to give his truck to his cousin to work on the farm. When the battered and bruised Mercury 4X4 pickup was finally parked in 1979, it had travelled 69,823 miles.

“Over the years, I spent time at the farm and would always visit my old truck and feel sorry for the way she had ended up,” he says. “I promised that one day I would restore her back to her original beauty.”

But an engineering and project management career that took him all over the world building pulp and paper

mills, mines and refineries got in the way. Then in 2009, his cousin Buck called him at his Fraser Valley home east of Vancouver to say he wanted to make the truck new again. “Buck said that he wanted me to have it back the way it came to the farm and I could take her home,” Brian recalls.

Rebuilding the truck to new condition in Alberta took more than two years. Another 1967 Mercury pickup truck had to be purchased to replace the rusted and badly damaged body parts on the original truck. The parts had to be from a 1967 Mercury pickup because of its many one-year-only pieces and a truck in good shape was difficult to find.

Brian’s truck was completely disassembled, the frame sandblasted and painted and the original 352 cubic inch V8 engine rebuilt along with all running gear components. The cab, box and front fenders were sandblasted and repainted the original Holly Green and Wimbledon White. Even the original bush guard was reinstalled after being repaired where it had been twisted and bent from towing tractors out of the mud.

Ivan Perry of Gibbons, Alberta rebuilt all the mechanical components, including engine, transmission, transfer case and front and rear differentials, while the body work, paint and reassembly was handled by Bev

Boudreau of Onoway.The 1967 Mercury 250 4X4 pickup

truck that Brian Beard bought 45 years ago is now a showpiece that is often displayed alongside its garage-mate, an equally rare 1966 Mercury 250 four wheel drive pickup he purchased from the Saskatchewan farmer who was the original owner. That owner had restored his truck himself with new paint to its original colours.

“Words cannot express the happiness I felt bringing my old truck home and being able to take her to car and truck shows,” Brian Beard enthuses. “It’s wonderful to be able to tell people how rare and special she is.”

Next week, read about Brian Beard’s fabulous Fraser Valley “fire station” filled with vintage fire engines – one of the finest fire engine collections in Canada.

Alyn Edwards is a partner in Peak Communicators, a Vancouver-based public relations company. [email protected]

Wondering how much money driving a hybrid will save you?

If an electric car will work for you? Or what emissions you’re currently

producing on your weekend get-away drive?

Toyota Canada introduces the Hybridizer, an online educational tool that allows Canadians to compare a conventional gasoline-powered vehicle, a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and an electric vehicle.

These powertrains are featured in typical driving scenarios like the daily commute, a weekend getaway or a road trip, and the Hybridizer tool shows drivers what fuel or electricity charging costs they face as well as charging times and total emissions.

And now Canadians have a chance to experience what it’s like to drive in a hybrid that plugs in, with Toyota Canada’s Hybridizer contest. Gas it up like a regular car or plug it in for electric-only operation – you decide what works best.

Running until April 31, the contest will offer five lucky winners the opportunity to drive a 2012 Prius plug-in hybrid vehicle for a week.

To enter the Toyota Drive a Prius plug-in hybrid For a Week contest, visit www.hybridizer.ca, follow the online instructions, submit an entry form and tell Toyota why you should drive a Prius Plug-In Hybrid for a week.

Drive a Prius plug-in hybrid for a week with Toyota Canada’s Hybridizer contest

Canadians can win a test drive of the new Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid by entering a contest online.

Cadillac CUE, the new user experience for intuitive in-vehicle connectivity and control, received a Popular Mechanics Top Gadgets of CES 2012: Editors’ Choice Award at this year’s International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Cadillac was the only automaker selected. The awards were announced on PopularMechanics.com at the conclusion of CES. Each

year at CES, the editors of Popular Mechanics select their top picks based on the level of innovation, potential industry impact and overall appeal.

Cadillac presented CUE amid thousands of new products and innovations in the consumer electronics showcase.

CUE features the first automotive use of capacitive touch – the use of electrodes to sense the conductive properties of objects, such as a finger. It is a technology

used by many of today’s most popular handheld mobile devices.

Other key aspects of CUE are natural speech recognition, Bluetooth connectivity for up to 10 devices and a motorized concealed storage compartment.

CUE debuts in production on Cadillac’s 2013 XTS luxury sedan starting in late spring in North America. CUE will also be featured in the all-new 2013 ATS sport sedan launching in North America this summer.

At age 16, Zac Sunderland embarked on the adventure of a lifetime: he set sail on a record-breaking 13-month journey and became the youngest person to sail solo around the world. Inspired by her older brother’s determination, Zac’s younger sister Abby attempted the same record just one year later, but met with a devastating rogue wave that unexpectedly ended her journey.

These two life-long sailors will share their remarkable stories of courage, perseverance and peril at sea at the Vancouver International Boat Show, Feb. 8 to 12 at BC Place and the Granville Island Maritime Market and Marina.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary as BC’s largest showcase for the recreational boating industry, the 2012 Boat Show features the season’s hottest new boats and boating products and the best deals of the year. Last year the show welcomed 31,106 visitors and more than 250 exhibitors.

Produced by Canadian Boat Shows, the show is Western Canada’s largest consumer boating event, organizers say. Visit VancouverBoatShow.ca for discounted tickets, schedules and show updates.

A free shuttle service runs continuously between BC Place and Granville Island. New for 2012, Water Ferries will run between BC Place and Granville Island, with pick-up at Plaza of Nations. On-site parking is available

at BC Place, along with numerous parking lots within walking distance and on-street parking. Find metered street parking within walking distance of the yacht club and the AquaBus stops at Granville Island.

Joining Zac and Abby Sunderland at this year’s Boat Show will be:

• ‘Duma’ – The Famous Water Skiing and Boat-Driving Dog, a seven-year-old Jack Russell terrier. This water skiing sensation and long-time skipper will be on-hand to meet fans for photos and more after each show through Feb. 8 to 12th.

• Russell Newberry – Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch will meet fans, sign autographs and share stories about working the world’s most dangerous job.

• Kids Zone – With friendly, energetic staff, and plenty of fun activities, like paddleboat rides, the Nautical Play Centre, located in the Kids Zone, is a can’t-miss hit for kids of all ages.

• B.C. Marine Authors – Find B.C. marine authors and titles, including “how to” books on everything from boat repair to navigation, tales of sailing adventures, destinations, and travel on the high sea, as well as appearances by featured authors throughout the show.

• Wooden Boat Alley – Meet some of BC’s finest craftsmen as they showcase their exquisite wooden creations and demonstrate their exceptional skills and passion for this time-honoured, traditional marine craft.

• Discover Boating Centre – Free rides, resources and un-biased advice from boating experts can be found at the Discover Boating Centre. Help with everything from maintenance questions to first-time boat buying guides is available here.

• Manufacturers’ Showcase – An all-new area dedicated specifically to manufacturers of marine-related products.

• Government Services – An area dedicated to marine-related Government Agencies.

• Get Your Pleasure Craft Operator’s Card – Become a certified Pleasure Craft Operator at the Show. Learn more about the test, or even write the exam, proving that you are a capable boat operator.

• Sailfest – Explore the largest number of sailboats ever found at the show at the in-water venue and find all sail-related products, services, schools and destinations, easily recognizable by the SailFest flag.

Kia Canada Inc. unveiled the KV7 concept to the Canadian market at the recent Montreal International Auto Show.

This “activity van” is the latest to embrace Kia’s design-led transformation through its unique features.

The KV7 concept challenges the notion that vans are strictly for family transportation and reveals a vision for a vehicle with the functionality to transport a large number of people and their belongings while also serving as a connected social hub for groups of friends and adventure-seekers.

The KV7’s design stands in sharp contrast to the dramatically raked

windshields and wedge-shaped noses found throughout the van segment. KV7 builds on the philosophy of “embracing the box,” established by Kia’s funky Soul urban passenger vehicle, which creates a unique and alluring design language that brings SUV-like qualities to the segment.

The interior includes four custom-built swivelling seats, including the driver’s seat, a rear-corner mini-lounge with seating for three and integrated storage compartments.

The unique seat and surface materials are in a modern colour palette, featuring soft beige and green tones, in a variety of unconventional textures including reclaimed teak wood flooring and sustainable wool and felt materials.

Kia displayed the KV7 Concept at the Montreal International Auto Show.

Volvo sends winners on Lapland adventure

Volvo Cars of Canada will be sending two lucky people to Sweden on the journey of a lifetime to take part in the Fjallraven Classic this August.

This unique five-day trek, 20 miles north of the Arctic Circle, features some of the most breathtaking views on the globe.

Surrounded by majestic mountains and crystal clear streams, the hiking adventure follows a 110km route through magnificent and rustic scenery comprised of green valleys and grassy moors.

“Fjallraven Classic was my way

of getting Swedes out in the Swedish mountains,” says Ake Norden, the founder of Fjallraven, “Now there are Scandinavians, Germans, Americans and people from as far as China.”

Food and fuel are distributed at the six checkpoints and medical staff are available for support should participants require it.

The grand prize includes flights, entrance fees, Fjallraven gear and a tent.

For those who wish to rise to the challenge, visit the Volvo Cars of Canada Facebook fan page or visit the Volvo display at the Vancouver International Auto Show in March.
