10 Suggestions for Lent
1-Meditate on the History of Salvation. Think about
creation of the universe and Adam and Eve as the beginning
of human life on earth. Think of the fall of Adam and the
entrance of sin into humanity. The Matins form Cheese
fare Sunday reminds us that; 'Adam sat and cried in those
days across the delights of Paradise; beat his hands upon his
face, and said; "Merciful One, have mercy on me who have
fallen.' The memory of what happened through the fall of
Adam and Eves continues to this day. One has to look
at the evil in the world and remember that it all started
with the sin of Adam and Eve. But then recall God's
intervention in human history through the Incarnation of
Jesus Christ, the New Adam who by His death and
resurrection saved us.
2-Review the understanding of fasting. Fasting is a very
important aspect of Lent. Think of fasting as not just
related to diet but also to the fall of mankind and victory
through Christ. In the Bible, Moses fasted 40 days
before receiving the 10 Commandments (Ex 34; 28, Deut 9;
9, 9; 18), and the Prophet Elijah fasted for 40 days on Mt.
Horeb (3 Kings 19; 8). In both these cases, after fasting
they encountered God. Jesus fasted in the desert for 40
days and was tempted by the devil. The fall of Adam was
caused by eating the forbidden fruit, and the victory of
Christ came through fasting and refusing the devil's
temptations. Fasting also detaches us from earthly things.
Not that they are bad in themselves, since everything God
makes is good. It liberates us from realizing that we don't
live on bread alone.

“Неділя сиропусна” чи “неділя прощення”, як її часто
називають – це остання наша зупинка для роздумів,
щоб увійти вільною від боргів душею у Святий
Великий піст – шлях нашого покаяння, ще один крок на
дорозі Спасіння. І простяться нам борги наші, як і ми
будемо прощати нашим боржникам.
Примиритися, щоб Бог благословив на святий піст
Піст – це великий дар для людини, що скріпляє її у
духовній боротьбі, допомагає духовно зростати і дає
нагоду вимолити в Бога великих ласк, спокутуючи свої
гріхи. Багато вірних чекає на піст, щоб, отримавши
благословення, почати і довершити цей духовний труд.
Це дійсно духовний труд, який приносить нам духовну
нагороду. А трудимося ми над самим собою і нагорода
буде – це ми самі, обновлені і наповненні Благодаттю
нашого Милосердного Бога.
Піст – це спільна справа, адже один в полі не воїн
У цьому часі ми всі разом, цілою Церквою,
будемо йти дорогою покаяння. Це дуже велика
підтримка для нас. Адже наша сім’я, друзі, брати
і сестри у Христі – всі перебувають у постуванні.
Будьмо у цей особливий час уважні один до одного,
допомагаючи і підтримуючи у духовній боротьбі та
ділах милосердя. Ворог буде заважати нам, бо боїться
посту і молитви, а ми будьмо готові до цього і, навіть,
якщо десь упадемо, то чим скоріш уставаймо. (cont. on pg. 3)

3-Reconsider our life of prayer. Great Lent is a special
time to pray. But what is the language and content of our
prayer? Do our prayers consist of only petition, or de we
include repentance, thanksgiving, and praise? Attend the
Lenten services. Read the Psalms, for example: 'The Lord is
my God will enlighten my darkness.'(18; 28), 'The Lord is
near to all who call upon Him.'(145; 18), 'Rest in the Lord,
and wait patiently upon Him.'(37; 7), read the Gospels, and
read the service book, the Lenten Triodion-the texts are
available online. Read the various prayer services such as
the Akafist, and Paraklis.
4-Be conscious of the gravity of sin. Sometimes we don't
take sin seriously. Yet Scripture offers a very strong
unequivocal picture of sin. The hymnology of the Lenten
Triodion is replete with occurrences of the word 'sin' or
variations of it; 'O my poor and lazy soul, why are you a
slave of sin? Why do you not hasten to the Physician in
your weakness?...keep your lamp lit that you may find from
Christ our God the forgiveness of sins and great mercy.'
"Forgive and wipe away all the sins I have committed, O
Savior…forgive me, O God, and save me.' We understand
the seriousness of sin with Christ crucified on the Cross for
the sins of the world. Let us reflect on how sin controls our
lives, distorting the divine image in us. Our sins and evil
led Christ to the Cross, but remember that God has given
forgiveness as the perfect antidote through the very same
Cross. Forgiveness is connected to repentance.
5-Make Lent a season for repentance. Along with sin, we
are called to reflect upon repentance. Repentance is a very
important aspect in our lives. Jesus began His public
ministry with these words; "Repent, for the Kingdom of
Heaven is at hand." (Mt. 4; 17) Repentance is not a mere
superficial, sentimental act, but a radical change of mind,
soul, will and mentality. It is a central issue and an
essential component of the Lenten period. God is always
ready to forgive, but we must repent. (To be continued)

15 ідей на Великий Піст (без відмови від шоколаду)
Сорок днів — це сила‑силенна часу. Проте дивним
чином вже перед Вербною Неділею раптом
вихоплюється вигук здивування: Як?! Уже Великдень?
Як так швидко минув піст, і чому я проспала більшість
цього часу? Маю кілька конкретних пропозицій, щоб
цього уникнути.
Однак спочатку я хотіла б чітко поставити одне
важливе питання: а, власне, для чого це все?
Великопісні рішення становлять часом збір
привабливих челенджів. Не буду їсти шоколаду або на
40 днів відмовлюся від інтернету. Я не маю нічого
проти таких конкретно і чітко визначених планів,
та куди вони мають привести — лише до задоволення
я це змогла? Чи постанови — це спроба довести собі та
світові: я можу, вмію і хочу цим пишатися? А може, це
делікатна форма певної гри з Господом Богом: мовляв,
я віддаю Тобі моє зречення, а Ти дай мені великодню
радість, відчутний спокій серця, навернення близької
людини (непотрібне закреслити)?
Сорокаденний піст — це не програма тренінгу душі
й тіла, він не визначає часових рамок Олімпійських
ігор, протягом яких ми битимемо рекорди в чергових
змаганнях з циклу: а тепер я не буду їсти цього й цього.
Тут ми не боремося за золоту медаль чи зарахування
або незарахування предмету під назвою добре
пережитий Великий Піст. Це все має лише одну мету:
наблизити НАС до Бога, а не навпаки: бо Він уже
близько до нас. Все, що будемо робити протягом цього
часу, має сприяти більшій відкритості на Його любов.
Отож здається, що саме Його треба спершу спитати про
те, як має виглядати цей час!
Церква дає нам три конкретні підказки: молитва,
піст і милостиня. Завдяки цьому легше скерувати свою
увагу в цей час на Бога. Я дозволила собі подібним
чином згрупувати кілька підказок, які могли
б надихнути до створення власних великопісних
рішень. Цього разу не зазиратимемо до холодильника
і шафок із тістечками…
Молитва
Знайди додаткові чas щодня na vervy;ku.
Маю дещо інші пропозиції:
1. Перед виходом на Службу Божу присвяти десять
хвилин, аби завчасно, ще вдома, ознайомитися з
читаннями на цей день. Дай собі на це хвилинку часу;
зауваж, що тебе в цих текстах зворушує, що привертає
увагу, що розпалює серце, а що викликає опір.
Порозмовляй про це з Ісусом і віддай Йому це під
час Євхаристії.
