Did you know that taking up a collection for ministry needs is one of the oldest parts of worship that we call the Mass? From earliest of times, before people gathered around the table (altar), they recalled those who were in need (primarily widows and orphans), and took up a collection for their welfare. As the church grew and ministries and needs expanded as well, tithing become an even more integral part of one’s response to the lavishness of God. The collection, then, was a time not only to take care of the poor, but also the other ministries of the church and the administration of the institution serving the people. Today this remains the same need. And instead of passing a basket with a handle to those at the ends of the pew, we each have the opportunity to pass the basket through our hands as a reminder of the obligation we have to the poor and the ministries of our local church. And even if we donate through automatic withdrawal from a bank, or are not able at a given time to make a financial contribution, Pope Francis suggests we at least make the gesture of putting our hand in the baskets to symbolize the other ways in which we give of our time and talents to God and the Church. Then the collection is brought forward through the assembly, along with the gifts of bread and wine and offered back to God, who made them all possible in the first place. God’s lavishness can never be outdone, but we can all strive to show our gratitude in what we give back!

“How Come we pass baskets at Mass?”

What is DAAP? What is TAXA? DAAP and TAXA are acronyms you see twice each year in the bulletin’s monthly parish financial report. DAAP is our property, liability, and Workmen’s Compensation insurance. TAXA is the taxes we pay to the Archdiocese of Dubuque so they can do the business of running an archdiocese. 2020 Archdiocese of Dubuque Men’s Conference— Hey guys. You know how Father John encourages us to step out of the boat… maybe by participating in or looking at something that’s new to us? Here’s an opportunity for that. The Archdiocese of Dubuque is offering the 24th annual Catholic Men’s Conference on Saturday, March 14, at Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids. There’ll be plenty of opportunities to learn more about how to live your Catholic faith. Sign up! More details and registration may be found at www.CatholicMenOnline.com.

A survey from last fall reported that most Catholics in the United States don’t believe that Jesus is truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. Wow! It looks like there’s a lot of confusion among Catholics. The Emmaus

Pastorate RCIA session for Thursday, February 6, will focus on the Eucharist. We’ll meet at the Psalm Center at St. Mary Parish in Strawberry Point at 7:00 p.m. We welcome you to join us as we learn about this powerful belief of our Catholic faith. Evening for the Divorced and Separated and Those Who Love Them—Whether you’re divorced or separated, want to help someone you love, or are interested in working to help divorced families, join Catholic author and evangelist, Rose Sweet, for “An Evening for the Divorced and Separated and Those Who Love Them” on Friday, March 27, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at St. Pius X Church in Cedar Rapids. For more information and to RSVP for this FREE event, go to www.DBQArch.org/Divorce. Pilgrimage to Ireland & Northern Ireland—Join us November 9-19 for what is claimed by many to be the most beautiful place on earth, the Emerald Isle! We’ll visit Belfast, Derry, Knock, Galway, Killarney, Blarney, Dublin and so much more! Mass each day in great churches and cathedrals along the way. Cost is $3,379 with departure from Omaha. For a brochure and more information, contact Father Dan Guenther, St. Mary’s Parish, 311 4th St. N., Humboldt, Iowa 50548, or call 712-899-6870 or email [email protected]

Our Sympathy and Prayers to~ Sandy and Duke Wegmann on the death of

Sandy’s brother, Chuck Stanton, who passed away in Henderson, Nevada, on January 19.

Becky and Danny Wulfekuhle on the death of Becky’s sister, Sharon Irwin, who passed away in Canton, Illinois, on January 25.

Marie Pasker on the death of her husband, Jim, who passed away in Edgewood on January 27.

Financial Stewardship—When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple, they offered a sacrificial gift “in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.” An offering of a specific size or kind is not “dictated” when we bring our gifts to the altar at Mass. Is my gift reflective of the many blessings I have received?

Financial Peace University! Have you wished you would have attended the Financial Peace University Classes last year? You now have a second

opportunity! These classes return to St. Mark Parish, with the first class on Thursday, February 13. The remaining classes will be held on Monday evenings, beginning February 17 and are held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The program is sponsored by St. Mark Parish and is open to ALL Pastorate members. If interested in attending and for more information, contact Jody Kerns (563-920-4836). The program is free, but does have a one time upfront registration material cost. St. Joseph Parish Is Hosting an Event titled "Whose Life? A Jumpstart to Discussing God's Calling at Home" on Wednesday, February 12, from 6:30-7:45 p.m. in the St. Joseph Parish Hall. The event will feature a panel discussion presented by Father John, a variety of religious sisters and brothers, and married couples from the area, all of whom will share their experience of living out God's call in their chosen state of life. All are welcome, especially parents and students in grades 7-12. There will be a Q&A session where anyone can ask the panelists questions. Questions about the event can be directed to John Uhal (563-245-2548).

sacrifice and joy in daily married life. This special Mass will be held at 2:00 p.m. February 9 at the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville. Reception with refreshments provided by Worldwide Marriage Encounter will follow in the church hall. If you are in need of a Gluten-Free Host, contact Father John before Mass so he can consecrate one. When receiving the Eucharist, be sure to receive from Father as he will have the special host.

Sick Calls, Hospital Visits and Anointing Contact the Emmaus Pastorate Office

(563-928-7200) if you or someone you know is hospitalized or needs spiritual care.

Sometimes family members are upset that no one has visited, but no calls were made to the Pastorate office, or they assumed someone

(hospital/care facility/or other family member) had done so. If in doubt, call! We would rather have several calls than none.

There are several hospitals and care facilities who care for our parishioners, not

to mention a large number of homebound. The key to good pastoral care

is good communication! Thank You for Helping Us Help You!
