Students begin by setting a reading goal and asking parents, family members, and friends to pledge a certain amount of money per pages read. Feb 6: Read-A-Thon ends Feb 13: Collected Pledges due Feb 18: Winning School Announced Feb 20: HCMS Lock-In for students who collect $150+ (4-9pm) How Not to Be Popular by Jennifer Ziegler Seventeen-year-old Sugar Magnolia Dempsey is tired of leaving her friends behind every time her hippie parents decide to move, but her plan to be unpopular at her new Austin, Texas school backfires when other students join her on the path to “supreme dorkdom.” - Titlewave Author, Jennifer Ziegler, resides in Austin, TX. Library Stats Visitors: 2,627 Classes: 74 Check Outs: 2,285 Holds Placed: 218 Austin Teen Book Festival Parker & Andrew read the comics together as they eat lunch. On Tuesday, January 20th, 25 HCMS students proudly displayed their Greek Mythology knowledge as they participated in a Mythology Bee sponsored by Disney Hyperion Books. Mr. Alan Abbe moderated the bee, which lapsed into several rounds. Austin Brown (seen at right, proudly displaying his medal) was our grand champion. His name has been submitted to the national Mythology Bee for a chance to win: a trip for four to Greece, a spot at Camp Half-Blood Summer Camp here in Austin, or signed copies of the Lightning Thief series. Way to go Austin! And CONGRATULATIONS to all of the participants (below)! You have much knowledge! What: A book festival just for middle school & high school students! We will be hosting twelve authors!! When: Saturday, May 16 (10am - 5pm) Where: Hill Country Middle School Goals: Connect teens to award-winning authors, encourage interaction between aspiring writers and established authors, motivate reluctant readers, support and promote recreational reading, listen to teen bands, and have fun!
