Behavioral Health Branch
Prime for Life
On 4 January 2011 the Behavioral Health Prevention and Awareness Program launched a new pilot program designed to train Marines and Sailors on how to better “protect what they value”. Every “new join” from H&HS squadron who falls in the high risk age group of 18-25, will go through a “welcome aboard” substance abuse pre-vention program called Prime for Life. This prevention program couples new science and human behavior change theory. This program (PFL) teaches Marines and Sailors that alcohol and other substance abuse is a lifestyle health problem they can control.
The 8 hour course will be delivered in an in-teractive group format and the Marines and Sailors will be encouraged to participate in an online web based survey of their “personal behavioral choices” in their everyday life.
The trained staff in PFL provided the senior leadership and the squadron an overview of the “new join” program. This program will be an added piece of prevention and education that the Behavioral Health staff believes will produce positive “life choices” and a reduction in alcohol related incidents and substance abuse cases. Positive sup-port from all leaders and personal respon-sibility of those within the PFL program will influence its continued success.
For more information on the origin of this new prevention program and how to con-tact the certified instructors go to: www.mccssc.com/community/counseling.asp

ReEntry is a play about coming home. This surprising and acclaimed new play, based on interviews with Marines and their families, puts aside politics and Hollywood alike to probe the unvarnished, and powerfully personal truths of those who serve and sacrifice. The 90 minute play that is inspirational, honest, even heartwarming; frank and funny that deals with the issues of combat operational stress, PTSD, and the experience of return-ing home. The performance will be followed with an interactive question and answer with the cast and crew. Behavioral Health Clinical support will be on-hand to assist any Marines, service members and their families if needed.
The former leader of the Navy-Marine Corps Combat Operational Stress Control Pro-gram (and retired CAPT) William Nash, M.D. said, ReEntry "portrayed Marines with respect, love, and humor, without feeling sorry for them, while side-stepping the political dangers of the topic with the grace of a matador."
The play will be preformed on MCAS Beaufort and MCRD Parris Island. The play is free and open to all eligible patrons.

Matthew Bogdanos, Colonel USMCR author of the best-selling book Thieves of Baghdad — “Based on hundreds of hours of interviews with returning combat veterans and refreshingly presented without agenda or sub-text, ReEntry is a tour-de-force of loneliness, fear, and anger overlaid with moments of warmth, growth, and inspiration.”

American Heart MonthFebruary has been recognized by the American Heart Association, since 1963, as American Heart Month. Cardiovascular diseases, including strokes and heart attacks, are our nation's No. 1 killer. The purpose of American Heart Month is to increase public knowl-edge of various cardiovascular diseases and encouraging heart healthy habits to promote prevention.
According to the CDC, living a heart healthy lifestyle includes making wise daily food choices. Here are some of their recommendations: • Choose lean meats and poultry with-
out skin and prepare them without added saturated and trans fat.
• Select fat-free, 1% fat and low-fat dairy products.
• Cut back on foods containing partially hydrogenated vegetable oils to re-duce trans fat in your diet.
• Cut back on foods high in dietary cho-lesterol. Aim to eat less than 300 mg of cholesterol each day.
• Cut back on beverages and foods with added sugars.
• Choose and prepare foods with little or no salt. Aim to eat less than 2,300 mg of sodium per day (or less than 1,500 mg if you are in a higher risk group for high blood pressure).
• If you drink alcohol, drink in modera-tion. That means no more than one drink per day if you're a woman and two drinks per day if you're a man.
• Keep an eye on your portion sizes. To learn about American Heart Month vis-it www.americanheart.org For more infor-mation on developing a healthier lifestyle visit www.mccssc.org and click on Sem-per Fit or call Health Promotion 228-7616.

Some Tips for Filing aVA Disability Claim
Filing a claim for disability compensa-tion can be a stressful experience.
Some things that appear clear and certain to you may not be to others. Additionally, legal requirements can sometimes be confusing and time consuming. To have the best experi-ence possible, here are some recom-mendations:
1. If you are still on active duty think-ing about getting out and planning to file a claim, go through the Career Re-source Management Center at your installation. To qualify you must have between 60 and 180 days left on ac-tive duty before you start Terminal Leave. CRMC will take your claim and have you examined before you go home. Normally, decisions are avail-able about 2-3 months after you sepa-rate or retire.
2. If you are still on active duty but have less than 60 days to go, you can file a “Quick Start” claim. Quick Start claims are processed at dedicated facilities so decisions are quicker for most Veterans.
3. If you have been out of service for less than a year, think you might have a claim, but are unsure if you want to “go through the hassle,” apply through the nearest VA office. The evidence is fresher and cleaner, there are un-likely to be what we refer to as “inter-current injuries” i.e. your back hurts a little, later you work as a long haul truck driver or a construction worker and don’t file a claim for years. In such cases even if there is some docu-mentation of “something in service” without evidence of treatment for the condition within the first year, service connection is less certain.
4. If you’re concerned that it might not be appropriate to take money for a condition because you say to yourself, “I’m fine, I was just doing my duty and I have a job.” Consider this: If your claim is granted you can always de-cline to receive the money. If, at a lat-er date, your condition worsens or you age and it interferes with your work, or you decide you want compensa-tion after all you can always contact the VA (1-800-827-1000). They will examine you and determine your cur-rent level of disability. They will not try to determine whether you warrant ser-vice connection in the first place.
5. If you have been out of the service longer but still think you have a con-dition related to your service, please apply. There is no filing time limit. It just might be a little more complex and take a little longer because of the need to develop more records.
6. The Department of Veteran's Affairs goal is to complete all claims within 125 days or four months by 2015 with 95 percent accuracy. Right now more than 30 percent of their claims have been pending longer than that. Some claims, such as those involving partic-ipation in nuclear tests, covert opera-tions, military sexual trauma or other similar circumstances where records may be difficult to locate can and fre-quently do take longer, sometimes much longer.
7. To meet the challenge of a rapidly growing claims volume, VA has signif-icantly increased their staff. The jobs are complex and it takes a while to be-come fully qualified. Therefore, if you think they made a mistake, ask-- you may be right. As stated earlier, one of their goals is to get their quality level to 95 percent by 2015. Currently their quality level is 84 percent. While a sig-nificant portion their quality problems reflect process errors rather than er-rors in the final decision with respect to the granting or denying of benefits, rates paid and effective dates of pay-ment, they do make mistakes.
Stay tuned for part II of this article, “How You Can Help Yourself and VA,” in the March Happenings.

FEBRUARY 2011 MCCS HAPPENINGS
Meet Kie Moccio, a Family Child Care ProviderKie Moccio, a Family Child Care Provider, has recently earned her Child Development As-sociate (CDA) credential. CDAs are able to meet the specific needs of children and work with parents to nurture children’s physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth in a child development framework. Moccio ex-plains, “I really enjoy being able to work with parents to determine goals for their children, and I’m able to support these goals on a day-to-day basis.”
Family Child Care (FCC) homes offer safe, high quality child care through high stan-dards for quality and well-trained staff in a family/home atmosphere with a small group of children in either government housing or a private home off the installation in the Beaufort area.
Moccio speaks to how the FCC program benefits the provider, families, and children. “I encourage parents to take advantage of the FCC program especially for children four and under. Care is individualized for that specific child’s needs and there is a low pro-vider-to-child ratio.”
The FCC program is a wonderful opportu-nity for a stay-at-home mother to earn an income. Moccio says, “earning my CDA cre-dential and becoming a FCC provider really gives me a sense of pride and accomplish-ment. I’m not only able to stay at home with my kids, but I’m also able to be a business
owner while fulfilling a passion. As a FCC provider, I’m really able to have it all.”
Are you looking for a home child care pro-vider or are you looking to become a part of the FCC network? Call Janet Knotts at 846-2270 for more information.

"Daniel" by Henning Mankell. Hans Bengler travels to Africa to discover an insect no one has seen before, names it after himself, im-pulsively adopts a young orphan whom he names Daniel, and brings him back to Swe-den. But Daniel, haunted by visions of his murdered parents, knows he must return to Africa. Since the only way back is by sea, he decides to learn to walk on water.
"Arsenal of Democracy: The Politics of National Security – From World War II to the War on Terrorism" by Julian E. Zeli-ger. Zeliger shows how partisan fighting has always shaped American foreign policy, and how the issue of national security has always been part of our domestic conflicts.
"Dead Zero" by Stephen Hunter. Marine Corps Master Sniper Swagger has traveled to the remote deserts and hidden caves of Afghanistan, not to look for Osama bin Laden, but to track down Staff Sgt. Cruz, an AWOL sniper determined to complete his last mission. With the FBI and a Taliban warlord on his heels, Swagger must find Cruz before he pulls the trigger.
"Straight Talk, No Chase" by Steve Har-vey. Drawing from correspondence, and us-ing real language from real women, Harvey offers wisdom on relevant topics, including: how to ask questions to get truthful an-swers; how power at work doesn't translate into success at home, and more. He also shares personal memories.
"Secrets to the Grave" by Tami Hoag. Although everyone knew of artist Marissa Fordham, no one really knew her. She was a woman with a past full of secrets and a present full of lies. When she's found mur-dered and her young daughter left for dead, Sheriff's Detective Mendez must solve the case while protecting the child from a killer.
"The Life You Want: Get Motivated, Lose Weight, and Be Happy" by Bob Greene. Getting fit and staying that way for life re-quires motivation. Greene tells readers how to break down the barriers and achieve their diet and fitness goals by helping them iden-tify psychological issues underlying their struggles with food, their body and others.
