Hamilton County “Open for Business” as New Position will Cut Red Tape Commissioner Chris Monzel has proposed the creation of a new job position that is designed to aid developers and businesses in cutting through the “Red Tape” in Hamilton County as well as create a supportive environment to bring new employers into the county. The position titled, “Special Projects Leader,” will operate in the Department of Planning & Development and work as liaison between the business community and all the depart- ments associated within. “In talking with homebuilders, small business owners and individual residents I’ve been hearing how time consuming and difficult our permit process can be” stated Commissioner Monzel, “Businesses and jobs have left or are leaving Hamilton County.” The new position’s job description calls for the individual “to monitor, identify and recom- mend solutions that will improve efficiency and overall effectiveness of the development and building processes; streamline the workflow and improve the interaction between customers and the department’s five divisions of Building Inspections, Community Development, Community Planning, Storm & Water Supply and Zoning. New businesses and the jobs they provide will improve the prospects for every citizen in the county. Representatives from the business and development communities are expected to join a search committee along with county officials to recommend a candidate for the position. Monzel said a series of 11 staff meetings, planned by Commis- sion President Greg Hartmann throughout this year will focus on specific stadium issues, along with potential solutions to the County’s financial challenges. “I think these sessions will help educate residents on the com- plexities of the Bengal stadium contract, and how decisions we make, are tied to other entities such as the Cincinnati Public Schools,” Monzel said. The first session of the series will be held later this month at a time and date to be announced. Casino Groundbreaking to Bring Jobs/Anticipated Revenue to County Numerous business and community leaders, along with elected officials attended the official ground breaking ceremonies of the Horseshoe Casino on Friday, Feb. 4 th . The casino is being developed at the 20-acre Broadway Commons site in downtown Cincinnati. The 354,000 square-foot casino, developed by Rock Ohio Caesars LLC, is scheduled to open in late 2012. Casino plans call for 3 restaurants with retail to engage pedestrian traffic and support existing cultural and other downtown establishments. The project will employee nearly 2,000 during the construction phase and will create 1,700 casino jobs upon opening. They have also committed to hire 90 percent of these employees from the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The casino should generate $100 million annually in gaming tax revenue. Local distribu- tion of gaming taxes will provide about $21 million to the city of Cincinnati, $12.2 million to Hamilton County and $14.1 million to Hamilton County school districts beginning in 2013. This deadline extension of one month delays the application of any penalties until March 1, 2011.
