From our Safety PatrolSometimes in the evening when we get ready to lock up,vehicles are left in the parking lot. Not a problem, if you'regoing to leave your vehicle in the parking lot for any reason, just let security or the bartender know and give them themake and model of your vehicle. This way we know that itis a member’s vehicle and we can keep an eye it.

Arrowhead Country Club is the site for The InlandEmpire Seniors Club playing on Monday the 11thwith a 9:00 am shotgun start. The course is closedfor member play until approximately 2:00 pm.
On Presidents day, Monday the 18th, the golf courseopens at 7:00 am.
Your professional staff is asking members to pleasecheck for golf towels and walking sand bottles. Ithelps us tremendously if these items get turned inafter you complete your rounds of golf. This way, wecan consistently provide them to our members.
We would also like to ask our golfers to help managethe turf on our practice tee and driving range. Withlimited space on our driving range, we wouldappreciate it if you could use a small area to hit golfballs. This allows us to keep the driving range openon the grass teeing ground rather than hitting offthe mats. When hitting range balls, by simply placingthe golf ball on the back of your last divot, you willmanage the turf much better. This reduces damagedturf space and you might be very surprised how littlearea is needed. If you have any questions on how tomanage this method, please come to the golf shopand we will be happy to demonstrate how to practicethis way.
Your Professional Staff, Brian, Sal, Sean and Alan
We are very pleased to announce the promotion ofRachel Rechou to Chef de cuisine for Arrowhead Country Club.
Congratulations Rachel: Rachel graduated from Aquinas high school in 2007 and thenattended Riverside Community Colleges Culinary academy. It was here that she achieved manymedals even winning the “front of the house “award for her outstanding hospitality skills. Rachel
has resided in San Bernardino for the past thirteen years. Rachel has been with us for the past two years as a line cookduring which time, Rachel’s performance as a chef continued to grow and impress. Rachel is known for her ability tobe a team player and her mouthwatering entrees.
General Manager, Wayne Austin is very excited about Rachel’s promotion, saying, “The quality of our food and customersatisfaction is very important for Arrowhead Country Clubs long term success. We look forward to Rachel’s ability toachieve the highest quality dining experience in her new role as our Chef de cuisine”. Congrats Chef Rechou!
Stay tuned for next month’s Arrows where Chef Rechou will share some of her amazing recipes.
I’ve always heard that 1927 was the date the course
opened. But thanks to this Sun Sports article from June
14th, 1928 it is well documented and we now know the
exact date. The first tee at Arrowhead Country Club (San
Bernardino Valley Country Club until 1944) opened for play
for the first time in its history on Saturday, June 16th, 1928.
This edition of the Sun is especially interesting as it places
the opening of the course in its proper historical context.
From this Sports page we see the names of such immortals
as “Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb(who was playing out the final days
of his career with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1928) and
Rogers hornsby.
And then there is Johnny Adams a nationally ranked local
boxing favorite from San Bernardino. In 1950 my dad and
I went to a local Mexican restaurant and as we were
entering my dad stopped to talk to an older man who he
asked to join us for dinner. The gentleman sat down next
to me and asked me some questions, but I couldn’t come
close to understanding his confused garbling and his ears
were so deformed it was easy to understand the origin of
the term “cauliflower,” and for that matter, the meaning of
“punch drunk.” This was Johnny Adams, who the sports
writers of the day had dubbed the “San Bernardino
Mountain Lion.”

From the SuperGreetings from the golf maintenance staff.January brought us some very cold weather. As ofpublishing time, we had already experienced fourteenfrost days. No superintendent enjoys calling a frost delay, but I would like to thank the members for their patienceand cooperation during this abnormal climate stretch thatwe have been experiencing. A few weeks ago I addedsome frost and dormancy facts to the weekly ACC e-blast.For those of you that did not have a chance to reviewthem, I have decided to also include them in my monthlyarticle.
Dormancy and Frost Facts
1.) Dormant fairways cannot be damaged duringfrost conditions? FALSEDormant grass is still made up of plant cells. Those plantcells still freeze and can be damaged during freezingconditions. Although the damage will not present itselfimmediately, it will become present in the spring as theplant begins to “green-up” again. Recovery will be slowas the plant will not be rapidly growing.
2.) It is best to drive on the fairways, rather thanthe over-seeded rough, during dormancy? FALSE
Many people believe that since the grass dormant, thatno damage can be done to it; however, this thought isincorrect. Since dormant grass is not growing, it is notcapable of recovering from stress or damage. Any damagethat is caused to the dormant grass will not recover untilthe spring. This is why it is important to limit fairwaytraffic as much as possible. If a golfer hits their ball intothe rough, there is no need to drive down the fairway. Please drive your cart in the rough to get to your ball. Also, use the par-3s as a good break to stretch your legs. Thereis no need to drive carts on these short holes. Whendriving down a fairway, golfers should be cognizant ofwhere they are driving and be sure to not follow the samepath as others. Any “wear patterns” that appear will notheal until the Bermuda comes out of dormancy.
3.) Traffic is the number one stress put onturfgrass? TRUETraffic is the number one stress that is put on golf courseturf. Traffic also includes mowing, which is one of thereasons that we limit our mowing practices in the winter. Please be conscious of all ropes, stakes, and signage thathelp us control our traffic patterns. Areas around greensand approaches require extra attention. Please pay specialattention to the new “Carts” signs that are being used tohelp control traffic in these areas.
Lately, I have been fielding a lot of questions regarding
when we will come out of dormancy. This can be a toughquestion to answer because the answer is entirelydependent on temperature and day length. We hadoriginally estimated that the period would last fromabout Thanksgiving until mid-to-late March. Due to thewarm weather that we experienced in the later part oflast year, we didn’t begin dormancy until December. If theweather continues in the current cold pattern, it couldtake longer for the Bermuda to come out of dormancy;however, if weather patterns return to normal, we maycontinue on our original schedule.
So far, the fairways are holding up as planned duringdormancy. By now, I hope everyone’s eyes are adjustingto the brown color of the fairways and that everyone hasbegun to enjoy the nice contrast of the roughs versus thefairways. Please remember to obey all stakes and coursesignage to help maintain our fairways in the healthiestconditions possible.
On a final note, please remember to fill your divots andrepair your ball marks.
As always, we look forward to seeing you out on thecourse!
