I would like to share with you a bit of Round Rock Ranch history that many of you might be familiar with. This would surround the large cluster of oak trees located at the Sundrop Pool here in our subdivision. We happen to have the largest Monarch Oak Tree inside the city limits of Round Rock according to Emsud Horozovic, the Forestry Manager for the City of Round Rock, Parks and Recreation Department, Urban Forestry Division.

Our Monarch Oak Tree helped instigate the first City Ordinance to protect trees here within the city limits. Mr. Horozovic presented pictures to the City Council in the hopes of preserving these magnificent living structures when the developer was submitting plans for the pool and amenity center here in Round Rock Ranch.

In 2002 Oak Wilt was identified and treatment was recommended. Milburn subcontractors trenched for oak wilt with the consultation of Mr. Horozovic and Eric Becker with the Texas Forest Service. There was a 52 inch deep trench cut with a rock saw to help prevent the spread of the virus. That trench held for a long time and looks like it did the job in helping to stop the spread of the virus to all of the oaks. The oak trees were also injected with fungicide by an oak wilt specialist, all paid for by Milburn.

Unfortunately one oak tree inside the pool area has succumbed to the oak wilt and has been removed recently. The other oak inside the gated area to the right of the entrance of the pool area, “The Largest Monarch Oak Tree”, has been treated with fungicide injections and deep root fertilization in hopes of slowing down the spread of the virus.

So next time you are at the Sundrop Pool, picnic area or play ground, stop and think of all the history that has taken place under those old oaks. I have heard that Travis and his troops may have camped under those trees when passing through this area. I know some of our neighbors who have camped there as boy scouts, back before our subdivision was here. A lot of Easter Egg Hunts have occurred under those trees, and who knows what other memories those old trees have in store for us.

ROUND ROCK RANCHThe Enclave

Hello, Enclave:Initially, the February edition of the newsletter was going to focus

on Lawns. There are several Enclave homes with no grass what so ever and many more with predominately weeds. The Board will be reviewing the violation report on Thursday, January 17th during our Quarterly Meeting with PAMco and we expect to continue to push for continued violation letters and fines. While February is good time to start re-sodding, there is another matter we are going to focus on today:

No sense in sugar coating it: Dog Sh!tAs a homeowner in the Enclave, and a dog owner, it is offensive

to me that many dog owners continually let their dogs sh!t in public areas and fail to clean up after them. At the time of this writing, there is a pile of sh!t on the cement pad where Rosenborough residents pick up their mail. I saw several other piles on the sidewalks and one the streets as well. There are some of you who think walking your dog outside the Gates and letting them sh!t in the public areas alongside the fence and leaving it is somehow better. Lastly, there are those of you who let your dogs sh!t in the Greenbelt and then do not pick up after them. During our November clean up day, we picked up pounds and pounds of sh!t.

Frankly, my family does not like picking up after our dogs (but all four of us do) so why should we pick up your dog’s sh!t??? I do it because I do not want to live in a Sh!t Hole Neighborhood. When you let your dog sh!t all over public areas and are too lazy to pick it up, you are basically saying our neighborhood is your pets’ toilet.

Those who want to justify leaving sh!t as biodegradable, I challenge you then to use it in a compost pile and then grow some vegetables in it and see how quickly your family contracts Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Salmonella or any of a variety of Worms. This is why Organic Gardeners will tell you to avoid dog sh!t in your compost.

The Enclave Board’s foremost goal is not to drive residents crazy with Violation Letters. Our goal is to put an end to the apathy of residents and develop some neighborhood pride. When it comes time for you to sell your home and move on, what message are you sending to potential buyers? “The Enclave has the largest Pet Toilet this side of I-35” is not a selling point.

[Note: this is not solely a problem of the Enclave – these same issues can be found in the greater Round Rock Ranch Neighborhood.]

Lastly, there is a Round Rock City Ordinance dedicated to your dog’s sh!t: see ARTICLE VI. – SANITATION - Sec. 8-137. – “Maintaining sanitary conditions on public property “(Link: http://goo.gl/q6ZF1). The Board has one case open with Animal Control for someone who lets their large dog run off a leash and fails to pick up after it – both violations of City Ordinances and subject to fines. We encourage Enclave residents to make reports directly to Round Rock Animal Control (512-218-5500) when you see this or provide photographic and/or anecdotal evidence to us as well at [email protected] and we will contact them for you. Please provide as much information as you can, especially if you know their address.

In closing, if you would like more information on getting your lawn ready for Spring, please check out Williamson County’s Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service website. There are several articles on the Turfgrass Webpage (http://goo.gl/tshrT) including a great maintenance schedule (link to PDF: http://goo.gl/02zdG). Most Enclave lawns are St. Augustine’s Turfgrass, so reapplying the same product does not require the submission of an ACC request. If you wish to move to something more drought tolerant, please contact PAMco for an ACC request form.

As always: to receive Enclave updates that are more frequent and more informative and will allow you to link to the Enclave Google Calendar, please send an email to [email protected]

Spring Clean Up Day is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 23. Please mark your calendar or email us to be included if you would like to participate.
