In addition to basket making, the class will include discussion of traditional and nontraditional use of plants for basketry and methods for processing and gathering plant materials. All levels of skill are welcome. Each attendee will finish a basket about 4-6 inches in diameter.

our planet. However, it is home to incredible creatures that have taught us amazing things about how life adapts and thrives in extreme environments. It may even hold the key to understanding the possibility of extraterrestrial life. Dr. Byers will discuss the structure of this captivating ecosystem, using lots of vibrant photos, videos, and audience participation. The Georgia Virtual History ProjectConfronting the Past On-Site

Lecture & Discussion

“Though still in its planning stages . . . the Georgia Virtual History Project is, well, wow.”

--Chris Cantwell, Digital Humanities for Public Historians, April 23, 2013--

Wednesday, March 19Dr. Christopher R. LawtonExecutive Director, the Georgia Virtual History ProjectDigital Humanities Fellow, UGA Department of History, UGA Willson Center The Rock House5:00 p.m. Cocktails5:30 p.m. Program$5.00 per personReservations begin February 19

The Georgia Virtual History Project (GVHP) is an effort

to use new and interactive technologies to record the history of the state of Georgia and make it available to multiple audiences, from eighth-graders to academic professionals. It is being built around research by faculty and students in multiple

departments at the University of Georgia and advanced high school students at Athens Academy. GVHP’s goal is to spread this model out across the state, ultimately creating a system whereby students and faculty in countless communities can help build virtual records of their local pasts.

In addition to its website, GVHP also runs off a mobile app that allows participants to use their smartphones and tablets to access mini-documentaries, historical

resources, and tourism-related information at locations across the state. The evening’s discussion will consider the goals of the project as seen through content recently produced for historic sites in Athens and Jefferson, GA. Both sites are provocative reminders that the ground beneath our feet connects us with what has come before, good and bad, glorious and difficult. The Georgia Virtual History Project aims to be a tool to help us rediscover that ground and hear the stories it has to tell.

English Proverb

“from little acorns mighty oaks do grow”An old English proverb –“from little acorns mighty oaks do grow”– reminds us that little seeds mature into mighty generations. Similarly, our knowledge and intellect are strengthened by the seeds of cultural experience. At Reynolds Plantation, we have chosen the acorn to represent the seeds of our cultural experience. The acorn is the fruit of Georgia’s state tree, the Live Oak, and offers much symbolism as we prepare an exciting series of programs to entertain and enlighten you. The Linger Longer Living cultural lifestyle programs combine the best of visual and performing arts (including exhibitions, music, lectures, excursions and instruction) with a uniquely diverse audience to create an unparalleled cultural experience for the South’s Premier Golfing and Lakeside Destination.
