A Recap of KBIS: the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show

Billed by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) as “an inspiring, interactive platform that showcases the latest industry products, trends and techonologies,” KBIS draws thousands of kitchen & bath professionals. The show, part of Design & Construction Week, was held Feb. 4-6 in Las Vegas.

Canyon Creek had a 20’ x 30’ booth at this year’s show. As we prepared for KBIS, we took over a corner of the factory and completely assembled the booth–including lighting, countertops and decorative items. Photographed, taken apart, numbered, and put into crates, it filled an entire trailer.

After arrival, the set up crew worked long hours to get it put together. They did take a little break on Sunday afternoon to watch the Super Bowl (Go Hawks!) but still managed to have everything in perfect condition for the show opening on Tuesday, Feb 4.

This year was the first year that KBIS was at the same time and location as the International Builder Show (IBS). The draw of those two important shows together plus the feeling that we have emerged from the long housing recession were important factors in drawing large crowds

to Las Vegas. Our booth was very popular and was busy virtually all of the time with interest from existing customers, prospects, and builders.

It’s hard to pick out the thing that was the biggest hit in the booth, but the black walnut display, the wall bed and the red high-gloss Katana display were very active. Many people commented about the “Godfather” humor of the horse head picture over the bed in the wall bed unit, and visitors were intrigued by the “penny backsplash” in the walnut display.

With two large shows held at the same time, there was plenty of traffic past our booth!

Unpacking and re-assembling the booth is a bit chaotic, but good planning and a great crew made it go quickly.

The wall bed was a big hit, and more than a few people stopped by to “take a load off.”

KBIS Recap continued

Our black walnut display featured plenty of hidden storage (below) and a very popular backsplash made of pennies.

The “Ultimate Kitchen”We also had Canyon Creek product shown in a pre-built home that was stationed in the parking lot of the convention center. This unique opportunity gave us a chance to show even a greater variety of product and to reach builders that might not come through the kitchen displays.

The vibrant, colorful space included a mix of door styles, stain colors and paints. The china cabinet, painted in Sherwin William’s “Mythical” (through our Pick Your Paint program) was a crowd favorite. With a laundry space, entry bench and cozy family room, it was truly a “living kitchen.”

While you dream of a full remodel, there are several things you can do to change up your bathroom design. Here are a few to inspire you:

Quick fixes. Replacing your plain old shower curtain with a color-ful new style will make a big impact, especially if you pick up a few matching towels. Look for ways to make everyday items stand out, such as putting liquid soaps and lotions in decorative containers. Paint can also be a great quick fix, whether you repaint the entire room or just bring in an accent color on one wall.

Decorate differently. Change the hardware on your vanity cabinets to give your bathroom an easy update. Match your new hardware to other pieces in your bathroom to create a cohesive look. You can bring art into your bathroom and use frames that match your new knobs or handles, and those pops of color can also pick up tones in your bathroom linens or painted walls.

Cut the clutter. The best way to give your bathroom a fresh new look is to sort through all of the products cluttering up your sink or bathtub areas. Store anything you don’t regularly use in your vanity cabinets, and invest in matching apothecary jars to showcase your other items, like cotton swabs or lotion. Corral all your towels in decorative baskets so they are easy to reach but attractively displayed.

Creative Entryway SolutionsWhether it’s the front hall or the space adjacent to the garage, your home’s entry makes an impression on all who come through the door. Here are some creative options for making that first impression a great one:

Customize the closet. Add some specialized storage to your mudroom closet to keep everything in its place. Wire baskets can hold your children’s toys, boots or hats. Use acrylic shelf dividers to keep hats, gloves and scarves neat and tidy. Tilt-out or pull-out hampers also work great to hold wet clothes or organize umbrellas on rainy days.

Go kid-friendly. Corraling kids’ outerwear can be a challenge! Custom cabinetry can be designed to put storage at their level–a tall cabinet can have a closet rod, coat hooks or cubbies down low, so kids can put their own gear away.

Make it stylish. Create a welcoming space for your family and guests by bringing design all the way into your mud-room. It will help disguise the functionality of the space. Use complementary paint colors that match the surrounding rooms, and bring in elements like fabrics to cover a bench and pictures to decorate the walls and shelves. Use decora-tive baskets and bins to hold small items, and find funky, mismatched hooks to add character (and more storage).

Freshen Up Your Bathroom

Best Hues To Use In Your HomeEach hue on the color wheel comes with a different mood or feel–cool colors tend to give off a tranquil and serene vibe, while warm colors evoke a happy, warm and inviting mood. Therefore, when you’re trying to figure out which hues to decorate your home with, you should look at the function of the room and how the color matches up. Here are a few of the best shades for each space in your home:

The entryway. Bring splashes of green into your entry-way. All shades of green are associated with nature and can create an inviting atmosphere, perfect for welcoming guests into your home.

The bathroom. Blue is a classic in the bathroom for a reason–it produces the serene, relaxing environment we all crave. (For this reason, it’s also great in the bedroom.)

The home office. The color yellow is not only associated with happiness and joy, it actually helps promote creativ-ity and activate memory - both of which are important traits to have in the workplace.

The kitchen. Give your kitchen some unexpected warmth with shades of orange. Incorporate the color through custom cabinets, dinnerware, open shelving or artwork. With Canyon Creek’s Pick Your Paint program, you can even match your cabinets to your wall color–all we need is a paint chip!

Customizing your kitchen design to fit the needs of everyone in your family can require some creativity, but making some simple changes can increase your kitchen’s usability for people of all ages and abilities.

Consider custom cabinets that can make organizing kitchen essentials easier. Adding pull-out shelves or drawers to lower cabinets can help reduce the strain of bending over to reach things in the back. Shelves that pull out from upper cabinets are another option because they help to access items that might require more of a reach. Lazy Susans installed inside cupboards can make their contents easier to find as well.

Replacing drawer knobs or pulls with D-shaped handles makes them less of a strain to open for everyone in your home. You can select handles that fit the style of your kitchen so that they’re both functional and beautiful.

The appliances in your kitchen can help make the kitchen a safe place to work. Make sure appliances like your refrigerator and dishwasher are in easy-to-access areas. A raised dishwasher or a pair of dishwasher drawers may be easier to load/unload than a standard model. Keep microwaves at or just below counter height. When replacing wall ovens, look for a side-hinged door, which is safer for many people than the pull-down style.
