Inside Energy reporter Emily Guerin interviews Mark Fox at a debate in New Town. Photo: Andrew Cullen.

Whether we’re filling up our cars, turning on our lights, or powering up our computers, nearly every hour of every day we rely on energy to power our lives. And, as domestic energy production increases, we’re also confronted with hundreds of economic and social issues that impact our communities.

No state knows that more than North Dakota, which has been impacted by energy production more than any other region of the country.

Prairie Public’s Inside Energy radio, television, and online project brings the power of data analysis and investigative reporting to the topic.

Dark Side of the Boom In this four-part radio series, Inside Energy examined workplace fatalities in the oil and gas industry, calculated which state is the most dangerous, and investigated

Few issues today impact our daily lives more than energy

strategies to make the industry safer. The data analysis of state fatality rates had never been done before.

Solar Challenge Inside Energy examined how climate change and growing solar power are forcing a re-engineering of our centuries-old electrical grid system. Inside Energy’s data analysis revealed for the first time that monthly average grid outages increased six-fold.

Public Health Impacts In a two-part radio report, Inside Energy explained what scientists are saying about public health impacts of the oil and gas boom.

Data Driven Stories In response to a plunge in oil prices, Inside Energy did a number of data-driven stories. How low does the price have to go before this country’s boom is halted? What’s the long view? Where will the price drop hurt most? And why isn’t the $80 price point what we should be worrying about?

Listen for the radio reports and find more at insideenergy.org.

Like our Inside Energy partnership, Harvest combines the resources of several public media stations to streamline and improve the breadth of our reporting.

More than two thousand years ago, the thriving city of Petra rose up in the bone-dry desert of what is now Jordan. An oasis of culture and abundance, the city was built by wealthy merchants whose camel caravans transported incense and spices across hundreds of miles from the Arabian Gulf.

They carved spectacular temple-tombs into its soaring cliffs, raised a monumental Great Temple at its heart, and devised an ingenious system that channeled water to vineyards, bathhouses, fountains, and pools. But following

a catastrophic earthquake and a slump in its desert trade routes, Petra’s unique culture faded and was lost to most of the world for nearly a thousand years.

Now, in a daring experiment, an archaeologist and sculptors team up to carve an iconic temple-tomb to find out how the ancient people of Petra built their city of stone. The race is on to discover how these nomads created this oasis of culture in one of the harshest climates on earth, and ultimately, why Petra disappeared.

Tune in Wednesday, February 18, at 8 pm CT as NOVA explores Petra: Lost City of Stone.
