Pastor’s Pen: Each year on my birthday, I reread 1 and 2 Timothy, attempting to take an inventory of my spiritual life and my leadership of God's church. Over and over again, I am struck by some recurring themes: faith is caught as well as taught; we are called to reproduce ourselves (make disciples); this happens best by following Jesus' model of apprenticeship (learning by doing). With that in mind, I am excited to share with you that we will have a pastoral intern working with us the next few months here at FBC JC. Brooklyn McCoy is a student at Westminster College in Fulton and will be working with me and the other pastors during his spring semester. I hope you'll take the opportunity to meet him and assist him in any way possible. I've long had a vision that FBC become a "teaching church," in the same manner that teaching hospitals train physicians. I know one thing--Brooklyn will never be the same after he experiences God's loving work among this congregation! Easter comes early this year! (March 27). The season of Lent will be launched with our traditional Ash Wednesday service on February 10. Our theme this Lent will be "The Path of Forgiveness," as we explore what Christ's suffering and death mean to us. Guilt, shame, broken relationships with others--all are addressed in the reconciling work of the Cross. And we will also seek to find the balance-- healthy self-esteem versus our deep need for repentance, cleansing and pardon. Be praying with me about this series and make plans to bring someone with you to church each week. During the first three Sundays in Lent (February 14, 21, 28), I'll be leading a Sunday morning class (9:30am) on Baptist Beliefs. This is for people new to our tradition who want to learn more about Baptist distinctives. The season of Lent will also find us moving from the "germinating" stage to the "sprouting" stage of Imagine If. After our congregational discernment last spring and our three congregational conversations last fall, a team of facilitators is attempting to write up a coherent report, organizing all the data and dreams, to be shared at another congregational conversation Sunday, March 6. Pastor’s Pen:

Each year on my birthday, I reread 1 and 2 Timothy, attempting to take an inventory of my spiritual life and my leadership of God's church.

And we will also seek to find the balance--healthy self-esteem versus our deep need for repentance, cleansing and pardon.

Mark your calendars! Grace,

Children’s MINISTRY PAGE 4

Preschool Associate Last fall the Personnel Committee approved a request from staff and the Children’s Ministry Team to hire a Preschool Associate. This person will work on Sunday mornings from 7:30am - 12:30pm in the preschool area. Primary responsibilities include welcoming children and families to the preschool area and supporting Extended Session and Bible Teaching volunteers. The Preschool Associate will be an important partner in supporting our expanding preschool ministry with excellence. Please pray for the Children’s Ministry Team and our other children’s ministry leaders through the search and hiring process.

Becoming Like Christ On Sunday afternoons during Lent we will have a class for children who are considering baptism or have recently been baptized. The class will be for children in grades 1-6. We will study the traditions and practices of the church (baptism, communion, etc.), learn about Jesus’ life and what it means to be a Christian.

PLEASE NOTE THE NEW DATES - We will meet on February 21, 28 and March 13 from 3:00 - 5:00pm in Room 203. For our final meeting, those who are able will meet on Wednesday, March 23 from 5:00 - 6:15pm to make communion bread for our Maundy Thursday service. Location will be announced at a later date.

Prayer Shawl Ministry You see it every week in the bulletin - Prayer Shawl Ministry meets every Wednesday at 3:45pm in Room 326. Did you ever wonder who that is, or what they do?

It’s a dedicated group of ladies that care about people, and use their gifts to minister to them during a difficult time. Besides prayer shawls, they make lap robes, baby blankets, hats and scarves. Some items stay in our community, and others are distributed by FBC members while on mission trips. If you like to knit or crochet ... or would like to learn ... JOIN THEM! They welcome crafters of all skill levels. If you aren't available Wednesday afternoons, but would like to donate your handmade items, let them know! To learn more, or to find out about other ways you can help, contact:

Mobile and Online Giving at FBC Last month we launched new electronic options for making regular offerings. Contributions can quickly and easily be debited automatically from your checking or savings account or processed using your credit or debit card. Simply click the Member Login link on our web site home page and follow the onscreen instructions to create an online profile for AccessACS. Members and guests may also give from their mobile devices during our services. With a QR scanning app, scan the QR code printed below to bring up our secure mobile giving. You can enter an amount, select the fund where your gift should go, and add a memo, if you wish.

You may download the church life app in your app store and login to the account you set up in AccessACS above. This will allow you to make a gift in just a few seconds during the offering in our worship service. Just select “give” from the church life menu and follow the instructions to make your gift.

The church life app will also provide you access to the church directory and church calendar. Just follow the instructions above to set up an account, download the app, and login to get started.

If you have any questions, contact the Church Office.

Imagine If Congregational Conversation Exciting days are ahead of us as we decide on God’s dreams for FBC JC. The Imagine If facilitators met with Dr. Bill Wilson, our consultant, on January 16 to craft three to five God-sized dreams for the congregation based on our three congregational conversations in the fall.

We want to share those proposed God-sized dreams with you at one final congregational conversation on Sunday, March 6, at 12:30pm in the Fellowship Hall following the 10:45am service and a light lunch. Please make plans to join us. We need your continued input on this process as we listen together to discover God’s visions for FBC JC beyond our wildest dreams.
