We just got through with the Christmas Holidays and New Year's Eve Celebrations, and now we are already in February! Time simply goes by fast when you're having a great time, in a great community with great people. February promises to be just as busy as December and January with many events, programs, trips and sporting events planned for you. We have special dinners for those "In Love" with our Valentine’s

Day Specials at Clubs and Restaurants throughout Area I. We also feature some Valentine’s Day Runs for those who "Love to Run." And for the ‘Big Event’—"Super Bowl 50!!" Throughout Area I, clubs are preparing their venues for you to watch the game with family & friends, and of course, to have fun! Please see page 5 for all the details on where you can catch the action.

A few notes:

• We say goodbye to SPC Sean Sweeny and hello to SPC Joshua McElroy, our new Soldier support for the Area I Marketing & Advertising Team.

• In this issue of ITZ, we have the Korean Lunar Holiday, ‘Hours of Operation’ for both FMWR and AAFES.

• Our Business Operations Division (Clubs, Golf and Bowling) programs will close after 2 p.m. on Monday, February 22 for training.

• The new Warrior's Guide (version #3) is now out — your free ‘how-to-guide’ to Area I, and it's available at Camp Casey ACS (BLDG 2451)...if you’re new to the area, this is the 'tool' for you!

• Consular Outreach Services (Passports, Visas, Report of Births Abroad and Social Security Cards) are available on February 16. Please see page 46 for more details.

Your FMWR team wishes you a great February, and remember that this is the month we celebrate "Presidents Day!" Peruse the ITZ and find your niche, see you out and about!

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?50th Super Bowl Celebrations in Warrior Country!

Calling all sports fans, if you haven’t heard by now—Super Bowl 50 is upon us! For those of you who may not know what the ‘Super Bowl’ is about, here’s a quick update: every year after the dust settles in countless matches and football venues throughout the United States, the top teams from the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC) are matched up to grind it out in one final, epic battle called the Super Bowl!

The top 2 finalists in this year’s matchup, Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers, are gearing up for a showdown in the Bay Area at Levi Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers who play host to the final game of the year. This year’s Super Bowl is also known as the “Golden Bowl” not only due to its location but also because it is the 50th Super Bowl in league history. So whether you’re a Broncos fan, a Panthers fan, or just a fan of all sports—mark those calendars and try not to miss out on a historic event.

What you might not know is that while living in South Korea, the game won’t be taking place on Sunday night, but rather at 8:30 a.m. on February 8 a Monday, which by itself would normally present a problem for sports fans. However, Soldiers in Area I are on for a treat; as most if not all, will be given time off to enjoy this all-American sport with their families and friends.

Starting at 6 a.m. all Area 1 Family & MWR clubs will open for business to bring the game to you! That’s right, Mitchell’s, Reggie’s Pub, Indianhead Golf Club, the Iron Triangle and the Gateway Club will be opening their doors so you can watch the game live in a sports bar setting. For starters, Mitchell’s is providing free breakfast for the first 50 customers, courtesy of Mr. Nam, Yung Hui from Olleh KT. But if you miss out on that first batch, don’t worry, they’ll have a breakfast buffet consisting of eggs, bacon, sausages, biscuits & gravy, along with juice, milk and coffee for the low

price of $8.95. And that’s not all, Camp Red Cloud BOSS will host the event, creating a party atmosphere with music, games and several raffle item giveaways, such as an iPad Mini and much more!

“Our goal is to create a venue for Soldiers to come in and cheer for their favorite teams and enjoy a fun, party atmosphere event at six o’clock in the morning. That’s why we opened up all of the clubs so everyone, families and friends, can celebrate this game together.” Said Howard Kuroda, Chief of Business Operations.

Perhaps you’re at Camp Casey and can’t make it to Camp Red Cloud—no problem, Gateway Club has a party venue prepared for you.

“We’ll create a Super Bowl atmosphere here at the Gateway, complete with decoration, giveaways and free food, courtesy of the American Women’s Club Thrift Shop Association (AWCTSA),” said Avelina Richardson, Gateway Club Manager.

That’s right, if you’re planning on watching the game, why not do it in a Sports Bar with free food….yep, you read that right, FREE BREAKFAST for the first 300 customers. If you’re stationed at Camp Stanley, don’t forget that the Reggie’s Club will also be offering free breakfast for the first 100 customers; after that, the breakfast buffet will be available for $8.95 per person. So make sure you make it to the door early, you can certainly expect some stiff competition from other hungry sports fans!

That isn’t the only thing going on at Gateway Club. Throughout the month of January, the club held a “Guess the Winners” contest where customers wrote down their guess on who would be playing in the Super Bowl. Earlier this year, it would have been an easy pick for people to put down the Carolina Panthers or the New England Patriots, but as the last critical games of January has shown, any guess was fair game until after the playoffs. At halftime, one customer name will be drawn; and if the correct NFC/AFC Teams were written down, will receive a brand new Toshiba Laptop!

If that still doesn’t get you excited, well Casey/Hovey BOSS will also be in attendance, creating a party atmosphere with music, games and several raffle drawings such as a ‘Beats by Dre’ headphones for several lucky winners. Speaking of raffle drawings—did we already mention a $1,000 Roundtrip Ticket will also be given away at this Gateway party?!!? Okay, now you know….so just in case you’re still wondering

where to watch the Super Bowl, make sure you have the Gateway Club on top of your list of places to visit on February 8.

“What I love is being able to watch our customers—the Soldiers come together and watch them root for their team and see their friends rooting for the other, the competitive edge. We can’t bring the Soldiers to the game, but we can bring our big screens to life and let them watch it there. It’s a lot of fun and a great environment to be a part of,” said Jammie Hawkins, Area I Family & MWR Director.

So even if you aren’t the biggest football fan, or perhaps a sports fan who enjoys any sports atmosphere, come stop by any Area I FMWR club on February 8 and check out this historic event with some of your friends. There will be plenty of food, drinks, and good times for all; and in the end, there will be a winner and sadly there will be a loser, but it definitely won’t be you!

If you have any further questions call your local Family & MWR club for more details: Mitchell’s Club (732-8189), Reggie’s Pub (732-5485), Gateway Club (730-3400), Indianhead Golf Course Club (730-4884) and the Iron Triangle Club (730-5167).

The Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) is a strip of land established at the end of the Korean War to serve as a buffer zone between North and South Korea. Although the two Koreas have agreed to a ceasefire, no peace agreement or treaty was signed; and therefore, the two sides are still technically at war today.

Jeju-do or Jeju Island is one of the nine provinces of Korea, located 1 hour from Seoul by air. The island has a mild marine climate with four distinct seasons and an average yearly temperature of 15’C (60’F). In summer, temperatures range from 22’C (72’F) to 26’C (80’F). As a result of its isolated location and romantic tropical image, Jeju-do has become a favorite retreat for honeymooners and tourists alike.

The Noah Rehabilitation Center is an orphanage facility in Pocheon, Korea that serves as a home for some 70 students with mild-moderate disabilities.

On December 31, 2015, fifteen students from Casey Elementary School traveled to the Center as part of a host nation exchange, organized by Ms. Hye, Nan Kim and Ms. Nicole Davis from Camp Casey’s, Child, Youth and School Services (CYSS). While other battalions have sponsored the orphanage in the past, this was the very first time that children of the same age have visited the orphanage.

Ms. Hye thought that School Age Children (SAC)

CYSS ORPHANAGE VISIT

By Jennifer Tengco, M.Ed.Education Technologist, Casey Elementary School

should give back to the community, so the children decided to visit an orphanage. Many SAC children wanted to play and interact with the orphanage’s kids who don’t have any family of their own. Ms. Nicole and the rest of the CYSS staff thought it was a great idea because it was an excellent way to experience the culture of a country, while making a contribution and gaining an unforgettable encounter.

Kierra, a fifth grade student agreed, “I liked the orphanage because I got to play with new kids. I think the kids liked us and the games we played.”

Owen, a kindergarten student added, “We got

to draw and make candy necklaces with the Korean children.”

During the two-hour visit, students played games, danced, colored, and made candy leis. Even though there was a language barrier between the two groups, one thing is certain; these kids enjoyed their time with one another as they caught a brief but delightful glimpse of each other's culture.

Camren, a second grade student noted, “Those kids may not have a family like ours, but it was nice to see that they have each other and people who care for them.”

Ms. Nicole reflected, “I think by taking Camp Casey’s SAC to the orphanage, they learned about team spirit and how to trust their peers. The children also realized that even though you do not have a family or you have a disability, we are all the same.”

This was both a touching and memorable experience from both sides, we hope that in the years ahead; these same children will remember the time they spent together, one winter afternoon in December 2015.

The Area I Community Volunteer Spotlight for this month shines brightly on Army Specialist Myeshia Hendrix. SPC Hendrix, of 618th Dental Co., has been an active volunteer coach with CYS Services Youth Sports & Fitness since November 2013. “SPC Hendrix is a leader who likes to get involved and she embodies the integrity of the CYS program being conducted” declares Mr. Anthony Nanes Jr., the Area I CYSS Sports & Fitness Director. SPC Hendrix has accumulated over 100 volunteer hours, serving in various capacities with CYSS Youth Sports &

Fitness programs. She accomplished this feat in her spare time, which can be far and few in between, with the many military obligations to fulfill.

“SPC Hendrix is an extension of our youth activities,” asserts Mr. Nanes. “She is always among the first to volunteer, her presence and support in our sports season marks the foundation for a very successful activity.” he further notes. SPC Hendrix has been a model coach within the CYS Services Youth Sports & Fitness programs. As a coach, SPC Hendrix demonstrated an innate ability to teach youth sports and bring out the game skills of her team members. Moreover, other than just coaching, she seizes every opportunity to mentor the many boys and girls who participate in the various youth sports and activities; by encouraging them to be a better athlete, a better citizen, and an overall better person. SPC Hendrix’s interaction with the players and their parents has left such a positive impact and impression on the youth that they are sure to remember, for the rest of their lives. Her efforts has made a difference on the successful accomplishment of the sports and fitness program, providing a safe, positive and high quality sports experience for the USAG Red Cloud/Casey and Area I community.

In addition to volunteer service with CYSS, SPC Hendrix also contributed outstanding service as a Girl Scout Leader for Area I. Volunteering provided her the opportunity to impart her Girl Scout leadership experience through the use of Journeys and The Girls Guide to Girl Scouting.

SPC Hendrix’s volunteerism and commitment to excellence exemplifies the Army’s Volunteer Corp invaluable service and support to the Area I Community. For this we are grateful, and say thank you, SPC Hendrix! Congratulations! You are in the Community Volunteer Spotlight for the month of February 2016.

Korea not only has a rich history, but geographically it is surrounded on the east and west with beautiful mountainous terrain, and to the south with open seas. The AREA I FAMILY & MWR logo was designed with this in mind. The three main features of the logo are the ‘rising sun,’ the ‘two magpies in flight’ and the Chinese symbol for the word ‘human.’ The rising sun expresses the beauty of Korea as well as hope for the future. The magpie is a common symbol of Korea, adopted as the national bird in 1964—two of these birds seen together is considered as a harbinger of good luck or joy. The symbol for ‘human’ or ‘people,’ not only speaks of the Korean population but also represents Korean, Japanese

and Chinese culture. The human symbol also mirrors many of the large and small mountains found throughout the country, as well as traditional Korean residential roof tops. Because of the familiarity of the Chinese symbol for ‘human,’ so widely embraced in Korea, it was fitting to include it in the AREA I FAMILY & MWR logo, representing service to Soldiers, their families and others who live and work in the AREA I community.

Kimchi chigae is a very popular soup made primarily with

kimchi. It is often prepared using older, more fermented

and ripe kimchi, creating a stronger and flavorful taste

while fresh kimchi may not bring out the full and rich

flavors. Different variations can exist but sliced kimchi is

usually put into a pot with tofu, onions, garlic and beef,

pork or seafood, which are all boiled together with water or

anchovy stock.

The soup is seasoned with either dwenjang and/or

gochujang which contributes to the distinctive red color.

Final soup is normally served in a stone pot and still boiling

when served on the table. Typically, kimchi chigae is eaten

with a bowl of rice accompanied by various side dishes.
