President'sReportNewsCulinaryApprenticeshipPilotTheCookWorkplaceApprenticeshipprogramispilotingaflexibledeliverymethodinpartnershipwithEarlsKitchenandBar,enablingstudentstoworktowardtheirApprenticeshipLevelIcertificationwhileremainingemployedinKamloops.FundingSupportsTrainingforAboriginalLearnersTRUandcommunitypartnersAlexisCreekFirstNationandNorthernShuswapTribalCouncilwillreceiveBCMinistryofAdvancedEducationfundingtodelivertrainingprogramsto27Aboriginallearners.FinanceProgramsAcknowledgedbyCFAInstituteTRU’sBachelorofBusinessAdministrationfinancemajorandPost-BaccalaureateDiplomainFinancehavebeenacknowledgedbytheCFAInstituteaspreparingstudentswelltobecomecharteredfinancialanalysts(CFAs).MiningandMineralsDiplomaAnagreementforapilotprojectwassignedwithBCITandtheBCCentreofTrainingExcellenceinMining(CTEM),enablingstudentstocompleteBCIT’sDiplomainMineralExplorationandMiningTechnologyatTRU.OldMainWinsWoodDesignAwardTheexpansionofOldMain,whichfeaturesextensiveuseofwoodinboththeexteriorupgradeandtheFacultyofLaw’sinterior,receivedinternationalrecognitionatthe2015WoodDesignAwards.FacultyofEducationandSocialWorkApprovedbySenateonJan.25,theFacultyofHuman,SocialandEducationalDevelopmenthasbeenrenamedtheFacultyofEducationandSocialWork.ResearchersLeadTeamtoNepalNaturalResourceSciencefacultymembersJohnKarakatsoulisandWendyGardnerareleadingateamtoNepalthismonthtohelpdevelopforestfiremanagementstrategies,partofatwo-yearproject.DeterminingAccessConferenceSupportedbya$25,000SSHRCConnectionGrant,LawfacultyJannaPromislowandNicoleSchabusorganizedaconferencetoaddresstheimplementationandimpactoftheTsilhqot’inNationAboriginaltitledeclaration.

Co-opStudentoftheYearFourth-yearBachelorofSciencestudentCarleePoleschukisTRU’sCo-opStudentof2015.ThechemicalbiologymajorspenttwotermsconductingcancerresearchwiththenuclearmedicineteamatTRIUMF.IncreasingSafetyAwarenessTRU’sfirstannualSafetyAwarenessWeekfeatureddisplaysonStudentStreet,inTradesandinSciencetohighlightsafetyissues,andofferedworkshopsforfacultyandstaffonergonomicsandincidentreporting.TeachingPracticesColloquiumFacultypresentedbestpracticesinteachingonthetheme“BuildingConnections,StrengtheningRelationships”atthe12thannualconferenceonFeb.15.PrivacyandInformationSecurityConferenceParticipantsatthesecondannualconferenceonJan.28learnedbestpractices,trendsandforecastsinthefieldsofprivacyandinformationsecurity.HomeworkClubAnewinitiativeinpartnershipwithSchoolDistrict73enableslocalhighschoolstudentstoaccessvolunteertutorsattheUniversityPrepCentretwiceaweek.LivingWallReplacedConstructionbeganinlateJanuarytoreplacethelivingwallintheHouseofLearningwithwoodpanelling,duetotemperatureandhumiditycontrolissuesthatmademaintenancedifficultandcostly.InserviceDayTRU’sannualInserviceDayforstaffandfacultyonFeb.17featuredakeynoteaddressbylawyerLesraMartinandsessionsontheTRUbrand,LeaveforChange,VolunteerKamloopsandothertopics.EconomicsforSuccessEventJuniorAchievementBC’sannualeventonFeb.18broughtlocalGrade8to10studentsandvolunteerstocampustofocusonkeyskillsstudentswillneedinthefuture.ChineseNewYearTheTRUSUChineseStudentsandScholarsClubhostedaChineseNewYearcelebrationonFeb.5,featuringculturalexhibits,foodandperformances.
