There is no easing into the new year in the Australian thoroughbred industry. Many peo- ple in Australia take time off to sit back and relax, meanwhile yearlings ship into the Magic Millions complex in the first week of January for the Gold Coast Yearling Sale, one of the country’s most prominent sales of the year. A truly amazing event, the sale also incorpo- rates the famous Magic Millions race day, plus polo and the barrier draw on Surfers Paradise beach, which Aquis Farm was heavily involved with. The January sale is over for another year, and the focus is now on to the Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale where all horses are eligible for QTIS bonuses. As a Queensland farm, we are also excited to be supporting the Capricornia Yearling Sale in Rockhampton for the first time this year. Ad- ditionally, we will be featuring drafts at various other sales this year and would like to invite clients to join our drafts and use Aquis Farm as their agent. March Magic Millions Sale

Aquis Farm will be presenting a draft of seven colts and ten fillies at the 2017 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 March.

The sale has proven a great success over the years, pumping out top class racehorses including warhorse Buffering, who needs little introduction. Often the bridesmaid to record breaking sprinter Black Caviar, Buffering won a massive total of 20 races and placed a further 17 times, retiring with $7.3million in the bank.

Another graduate of the sale is dual Group 1 winner of $2.3million Spirit of Boom, who is now a first season sire success following his first yearling sales at the Magic Millions. Our draft features a filly by Spirit of Boom in Lot 167. Known as the QTIS sale, all lots offered have their first QTIS payment covered.

2017 Capricornia Year-ling Sale Shaping As The Best Yet!! Written by Tony McMahon for www.cqtba.com

This year’s Capricornia Yearling Sale in Rock-hampton, Queensland, on Sunday, April 2 is without doubt shaping as the best on record.

Organisers have been buoyed by the calibre of yearlings being nominated for the sale including an inspiring draft from Queensland’s newest vendor Aquis Farm in the Gold Coast Hinterland. The overseas proprietors of Aquis Farm have left no stone unturned or dollars withheld to acquire outstanding bloodstock and turn the facility into a Queensland show-place.

“We are thrilled to have Aquis on board. As well Neville Stewart, a fabulous supporter of our sale from Oaklands Stud on the Downs has a possible draft of 18 yearlings likely to come to Rocky. Aquis and Oaklands are serious par-ticipants in not only Queensland but also the Australian bloodstock industry. Their presence is a huge vote of confidence to the Rockhamp-ton sale”, CYS convenor Jeff Leaver said. He said as well local thoroughbred breeders had once again gotten “right behind the sale”.

Graduates of the Capricornia Yearling Sale in-clude Benfica Princess by Aquis Farm’s stallion Benfica, as well as Our Boy Malachi, winner of 19 races including two Group 2 wins and a total of $946,400.

Look out for details of the Aquis Farm draft in our next newsletter.

Get To Know - Paul KnightAquis Farm Business Development Manager

Tell us something about yourself that not many people would know.Aquis Farm is only my fourth employer I have ever had. My first job was as a messenger boy at the PA Hospital, second was with Elders Pastoral, third was Magic Millions.

How did you get involved in the industry?I grew up attending pony club and competed in eventing and showjumping. I had a love of horses and animals in general, and considered a career as a vet. Looking at other alternatives, I wrote a letter to David Chester with the help of my school career guidance counsellor and started working for Elders Pastoral / Magic Millions soon after finishing high school.

Have you had a mentor?I grew up in the Brisbane suburb of Wynnum and was friends with Mr Kevin Wallen, a horse trainer and trader, who quickly became my mentor. He was an excellent horseman who taught me all about horses as well as manners and respect.

Do you have any pets? Stella, a 10 year old Labrador.

How do you spend your downtime? Sleeping, running, swimming, & cycling.

What is your favourite race and why? ATC Golden Slipper Stakes - it is the breed shaper of the Australian industry where the stallions of today and tomorrow are made.

What is/was your favourite stallion of all time? The great Danehill. He is a true breed shaper in every sense, through the deeds of his sons and daughters, and then their sons and daughters, etc. The influence of Danehill has been noth-ing short of phenomenal.

What is/was your favourite racehorse of all time?Mahogany – sold by Segenhoe Stud (As Agent) back in 1992 and bought by Henry Plumptre for Lloyd Williams and Kerry Packer to be trained by Lee Freedman. He was a freak, wining the AJC & VRC Derbies as a 3YO, and was crowned Australia’s Champion 3YO and Australia’s Champion Racehorse in the 1993-1994 season. He trained on as an older horse to win the VRC Lightning Stakes twice, which is a 1000m sprint.

Stylish Century – I helped load Stylish Centu-ry onto the float after he was sold at the Magic Millions Golden Nugget Sale. He went on to win 11 races including the VRC Derby. There was always something special about Stylish Century right from the start. Dick Monaghan bought him for $6,000 along with a grey colt. We loaded both onto a float and away they went. I’ve always remembered Stylish for his snip on his nose and his good attitude. He raced by breaking others’ hearts as he could set amazing sectionals out in front. He set the Gold Coast 1200m course record from the outside barrier when he won the Golden Nugget Sale Stakes.

2YO Watch - Chappo

Finding top racehorse prospects at the yearling sales is never easy. Hours of research studying sales catalogues and pedigree pages, followed by long days inspecting horses at

studs and the sales complex and then deciding what price you are willing to put your hand up for at auction in order to secure the horse against other interested parties.

Such a lengthy process is paid off with horses like Chappo. By Fastnet Rock out of Amer-ican mare Cherishing (by Johannesburg (USA)) Chappo was a $150,000 purchase for Aquis Farm at the 2016 Magic Millions sale in January. A striking physical which screams strength and power, Chappo was a lot of horse to handle as a colt and the decision was made to geld him. Always a tough decision to make, there is no point keeping a horse entire if he won’t race well as one.

Chappo proved this decision to be correct, and proved his potential as a top racehorse by winning on debut at Doomben on 2 January by a whopping 2.8L.

Jumping first from the barriers, he led com-fortably from start to finish and looked like a horse who’d been there done that, rather than a horse having his first ever race start.
