Love Is… If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Can I be cliche and talk about love during this month of Valentine’s Day? I don’t know about you, but these last few months in our country have seemed to yield everything but love. We have anger and division and frustration and court cases and politicking and shouting and debating, but love? The kind of love that casts out fear and rejoices in truth? I haven’t seen much of that.

These verses from Corinthians are most often used at weddings, touting the way two people are supposed to behave in a committed relationships.

Paul actually wrote them to the divided church at Corinth; a community that was arguing about whose gifts were superior and who was preaching and teaching the most faithfully. They were written not only for two people, but for peoples who were angry and divided and frustrated and shouting and debating. Maybe these are exactly the words we need to hear during this strangely familiar season. History indeed repeats itself.

The love our Creator holds for us, is the love we’re called to hold for each other. And, it is a patient, kind, hopeful kind of thing. The text really needs no more illumination, it simply needs sat with. It needs prayed over. It needs to seep deep within our weary souls. I invite you to do just that…take a moment and read the passage again; Valentine’s Day or not, this is the life to which we have been called.

Holding onto Love, Sarah

Administrative Coordinator In the next several weeks, the process will begin to hire a new “Administrative Coordinator.” This person will work roughly 15 hours a week and there will be some flexibility in the days and hours that they work each week. Here are a few things that they will not be: This person will not be the Secretary. This person will not be the Office Manager. This person will not be the primary person covering the phones or the Front Desk during office hours. I am so thankful for the wonderful group of volunteers who faithfully fulfill these duties. Due to the limited hours, we want to make sure that the Admin Coordinator can focus on the tasks that need to be accomplished.

The Admin Coordinator will be responsibly for keeping forms up to date and accurate. This person will also be responsible for keeping office records up to date and accurate, ordering office supplies, etc. This person will also work closely with the pool of volunteers who work at the front desk, who run the bulletins and other publications, and who work with our church

management software. This person will also be responsible for training and scheduling of the volunteers. This person will need to have excellent computer skills and a willingness to learn and try new tasks without a lot of explanation.

As of this moment, there isn’t a finalized job description for the Administrative Coordinator. Hopefully, this will get finished in the next week or two so that we can begin the search for the right person to fill this position.

As I said in my annual report, part of the reason that we are needing an Admin Coordinator at this time is because of Pastor Troy’s retirement as Visitation Pastor. The purpose is to free up time, primarily in my schedule, to visit our seniors in a timely fashion and to coordinate with the Table Runners in the important work that they are doing. Thank you for your support and prayers as we seek to fill this position and in the transition that follows.

God’s Peace, Pastor Steve

Winter 2017 The History of the Reformation

6

Our church’s namesake, Martin Luther, stood at the eye of the hurricane. His intense spirituality (and personality!) and especially his devoted study of scripture led to a breakthrough rediscovery of the Gospel. His eyes were opened to the gift of salvation and forgiveness based entirely on the merits of Christ alone, given to sinners by grace through faith. October 31, 1517 is recognized as Reformation Day - the day Luther posted 95 theses for debate on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, setting off a firestorm of controversy.

We are organizing educational opportunities for our congregation to engage in the issues, theology, and history of the Reformation while also reflecting on the church of today…and tomorrow. The Reformers spoke often about “Word alone, Faith alone, Grace alone,” which is to say: Christ alone. We continue to ask, “Who is Jesus Christ for us? Where will we follow the Risen One in mission?”

This is a basic sketch for 2017 designed to engage us in the study of God’s Word, the Faith confessed by the Reformers, and the Grace in which the church both stands and serves God’s world.

Peace, Pastor Tom

Silence Shusaku Endo's classic novel of enduring faith in dangerous times, soon to be a major motion picture directed by Martin Scorsese. Seventeenth-century Japan: Two Portuguese Jesuit priests travel to a country hostile to their

religion, where feudal lords force the faithful to publicly renounce their beliefs. I first read this book 30 years ago and still consider it to be one of the most powerful novels I have ever read. "Silence I regard as a masterpiece, a lucid and elegant drama.” -The New York Review of Books.

October 31, 1517 In October 31, 1517, Martin Marty answers the question: Why is the Reformation relevant today?

Rather than a historical narrative of Reformation events, he explains in this

accessible book the issues that led to Luther’s posting of the 95 Theses, their implications for the Church and world . . . and most importantly, how this impacts us devotionally as Christians of any denomination.

• Children of the Dust Bowl: The True Story of the School at Weedpatch Camp by Jerry Stanley (a good read for families, Dale even liked it.

• Another View by Rosamunde Pilcher

• The Lady of the Unicorn by Tracy Chevalier

• Away off Shore: Nantucket Island and Its People: 1602-1890 by Nathaniel Philbrick

• Faith Alone: A Daily Devotional by Martin Luther (a new translation)

• Lab Girl by Hope Jahren (fascinating view of women in science)

• Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike by Phil Knight (I liked this book)

• Hidden Figures by Margaret Lee Shetterly (the story of three NASA scientists who happened to be female and black (also a brand new movie).

• So Very Much the Best of Us by Brian Doyle

• Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance (powerful memoir about life in the Rust Belt)

• Great Plains by Ian Frazier (wonderful travelogue and reflection on America’s Great Plains)

I didn’t meet my goal of reading 100 books last year. I made it to 95.

My Ideal Week Eugene Petersen recalls a Scottish pastor known as “invisible six days a week, and incomprehensible the seventh.” Or, you may have heard the one about the pastor who only works one day a week. I have been asked by many youth over the years what I do for my regular job, or if I have another job. One asks if I get paid to be a pastor and another asks if I own this whole church!

I can tell you, the rhythm of a pastor’s week includes wearing many hats and balancing tight scheduling with the certainty of important changes to best-laid plans. As a productivity book/blog/podcast junkie, I have come to benefit from what is called an “ideal week.” “If you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time,” quips Zig Ziglar. So, here’s my aim:

Weekday Mornings: Office Hours, 9-1pm

• Administration, Program Prep, Planning, Meetings, Daytimers Bible Study

• Appointments, Visitation

Weekday Midday: Lunch and Napping the Boys

Weekday Afternoons: Parsonage Study, 2-5pm

• Preaching/Teaching Prep

• Study and Prayer

• Appointments, Visitation

Weekday Evenings: Family

• Except for Confirmation Wednesdays, Church Council, occasional meetings/events

• Aim to work only two evenings/week

Saturdays: Sabbath or 1/2 Sabbath

• Remaining Sunday Prep

• Family Day

Sundays: Worship and Youth Group

• Worship, Preaching, Teaching

• High School Youth Group, 12-1:30pm

Odd Hours: Study and Prayer

• Much of my general reading/study occurs before 9am or after 9pm

• I’m usually in my study by 5-6am on Sundays to refresh myself on sermon/class content

I also find it helpful to have a general theme for each day:

• Monday: Programs Day (prep Confirmation, Youth Group, Trips/Retreats)

• Tuesday: Team Day (Eugene pastors text study, Bethesda staff, Pastoral team meeting)

• Wednesday/Thursday: Preaching/Teaching Prep

• Friday: Catch-up/Review Day (Sunday prep, weekly review of my task management app)

• Saturday: Family Day

• Sunday: Worship & Youth

I am blessed to start my day with family, see them every midday, and spend most afternoons working from home.

Hope this satisfies some curiosity or encourages your own planning of an ideal week!

Peace,Pastor Tom
