Blue Mountain Forest Plan Revision By John Vogel, Public Lands

`

* * * * * ** By Peggy Spieger, OSSA Executive Director PEGGY SEZ Kudos to the La Pine Lodgepole Dodgers for a great convention and all the snow a snowmobiler could ask for. Thank you to all the groomer operators who worked so hard to keep up with all that show to make your trails the best they could be. Thank you to all the Dodgers for their ded-ication to a successful convention.

Congratulations to Gary and Haysel Pankey of the Lodgepole Dodgers Snow-mobile Club, recipients of The OSSA Snowmobiler of the Year Award. Gary is the Dodgers Trail Boss and Haysel, along with Judy Bice organize the OSSA Silent

Auction every year.

Our Dealer of the Year is Dan’s Motor Sports of Salem for their support for OSSA and it’s member clubs and the snowmo-bilers of Oregon.

Winter recreationalist of the Year is Mike DeSmit of the Klamath Ranger District, Fremont-Winema National Forest for his collaboration in working with the clubs in his district.

Congratulations to all and thank you for your dedication.

Now would be a good time to contact your local congressional offices and ask them to urge their congressman to make the necessary changes to have congres-sional approval for all monument designa-tions with a management plan in place before designation.

Make your voice heard today.

Ride with care, snowmobilers.

Peggy

The Take a Friend Snowmobiling Campaign is all about introduc-ing non-snowmobilers to our winter recreation of choice. Re-search shows that people WANT to go snowmobiling but don’t know HOW to get started. By planning a ride, we take the guess work out of it for those that might not try it any other way. Buying a snowmobile is a great investment so if we can show people how to get start-ed properly, they might be more inclined to join us in our clubs, associations, and on the trails or in the mountains and open riding areas.

Sometimes individuals have little knowledge about snowmobiling. If we take them out for a ride and show them how much fun it is and how wonderful it is to experience the winter in a unique way with friends and family, we can shed the true light on the family activity of snowmobiling.

So we encourage you to help your club and your state/provincial snowmobile association grow by in-troducing new people to snowmobiling!

The members of the International Snowmobile Manu-facturers Association (Arctic Cat, BRP, Polaris, and Yamaha) join the organized snowmobile community in announcing the Take a Friend Snowmobiling Cam-paign for 2017. State and provincial snowmobile asso-ciation members of the American Council of Snowmo-bile Association (ACSA) and the Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organizations (CCSO) are encouraged to sponsor Take a Friend Snowmobil-ing activities throughout their states and provinces. Events can be held any time between December 1, 2016 and March 31, 2017 with special emphasis on events during Take a Friend Snowmobiling Week.

The campaign was created to support all snowmobile associations of ACSA and CCSO and their clubs to en-hance and expand their partnership with local Cham-bers of Commerce, Visitor and Convention Bureaus, snowmobile dealers, and other businesses related to the snowmobiling community. The benefits for your state association could mean such things as more trail

signs, groomers, and enhance-ments for trails in your state, with the biggest benefit of all ~ introducing your non-snowmobiling friends to your favorite winter

activity. All clubs are encouraged to participate in the campaign and partner with local media, radio sta-tions, television stations, etc in promoting your Take a Friend Snowmobiling event and your club activities.

Extensive research has shown that a vast majority of non-snowmobilers who live in the snow-belt are very interested in snowmobiling. When asked to rate their interest on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the highest level of interest) non-snowmobilers rate their interest at 9!

Research has also shown us that most individuals that live in the snow-belt see snowmobiling as a great way to:

a. Enjoy the scenery

b. Get outdoors and have fun with family and friends

c. Go to unique places and see amazing sights

d. Have fun in the winter outdoors and be able to go home tired and ready for a good night’s sleep.

The Take a Friend Snowmobiling campaign is promot-ed by the manufacturers who en-courage all snowmobilers to take their non-snowmobiling friends out snowmobiling to enjoy the winter.

We hope your club and association will participate in a Take a Friend Snowmobiling event. Talk with neighboring clubs to participate as well. Let your association office know about your plans. The events should increase the profile of your club and attract new support and members.

WOW! We received so much snow this last month! It's kept our dedicated groomers hustling to keep it all under control. Kudos to them and all their vol-unteer hours.

Our New Years Eve at the Snow Shelter with good food and fun was enjoyed by those that made the trek. Thanks to Curts Electric for the generator for lights and electricity. David Asson was our Snow depth guess raffle winner-congratulations! The New Years Day riders were treated to about a foot of pow-der on top of the groomer tracks from the night before. Pretty dang stormy up in the high country.

Sisters SnoGoFers hosted the first day luncheon for OSSA convention riders. Special thanks to Danita Howe and Cheryl Milo for making that a success. They and Roger Ingalls, Nick Milo and Curt Christopherson greeted the riders with a warm fire and hearty lunch. Great job guys! Members attending the OSSA convention in LaPine...Curt Christopherson, Danita Howe, Roger Ingalls and Nick and Cheryl Milo. Danita, Cheryl and Kathy West put together a nice raffle basket that we donated to OSSA.

Looks like this may be a epic sledding year! Be Prepared, Ride courteously, have Fun and Stay Safe!

Greetings Brothers and Sisters of the Oregon State Snowmobile Association. How's about all this snow we are being blessed with? Thanks again mother nature. The only problem is we are spending way too much time shoveling and plowing and not nearly enough time out playing on it.

Was nice to see everyone again at the convention CGPS had eight members in attendance. Thanks to the Lodgepole Dodgers for a great job. And congratulations to Gary and Hazel which are very deserving co-snowmobilers of the year.

Our next Club event is February 4th at our warming shelter at the Billy Bob Snow Park, 12 miles west of Dufur.

Pictures are of our club ride in December, Walt and Alvin stuck again, and Craig chasing his runaway snowmobile, our grooming chairman and our groomer Dave Rodgers, Gorge power Sledders making a 112 mile trip from Wanogo Sno Park to Manley's in Cres-cent for some world famous broasted chicken, hope to see every-one at the poker run. Be safe and see you on the trail.

WALKER RIM RIDERS Snow Snow Snow! That’s the only way to describe our winter season thus far! The snow pack around Crescent Lake and upper moun-

tain ranges has been one for the ages!

With this much snow you might expect the trails to need some more atten-tion due to groomers not being able to reach all the trails in a timely manner but that is not the case with the trails around these parts! The volunteers from the Walker Rim Riders grooming committee has been very hard at work this season keeping our trails in great riding condition.

During the month of January our members have been doing informal pickup rides, including a marathon run from Crescent to Crater Lake on New Year ’s Eve with 18 sleds and a run to the north to Elk Lake. February, March and April have scheduled activities with hosted rides most months on the 2nd Sat-urday. Watch our facebook page for updates and destinations as we get closer to those days.

Also, on Sunday, February 26th, our club will be hosting the Candlelighters Snow Play day. If you are around Crescent Lake during this weekend and are available to help out, all volunteers are appreciated! We will be having dog sled rides, snowmobile rides, S’mores, Ski Demo and the alltime favorite sled hill in operation. Lunch is provided. If you’re interested in volunteering please message us through Facebook and we will keep you in the loop.

MT HOOD SNOWMOBILE CLUB It's January and we've actually got snow this year! We had dinner catered at our last meeting and we had a great turnout. We have slowly been moving more of our business to our board meetings so we can make our membership meetings more enjoyable. We have also replaced our "snafu" jacket award with a "best story" award. The new format has not changed any of the gross exaggerations which only adds to the fun! In an effort to make our sno-park more enjoyable for everyone, we have been placing additional signs that read, "SLOW ZONE 5 MPH watch for children & pets playing". In recent years we have been getting a lot more people driving way too fast in our sno-park. The new signs have really been helping.

We are currently working with the Forest Service to allow us to place additional signs at our trail entranc-es to help prevent 4wd vehicles from entering our trail system. This is an ongoing problem every year. The local FS law enforcement officers are very supportive of our efforts to accomplish this goal.

Klamath Basin Drifters We are continuing to see the snow piling up in our favorite riding areas. I sure hope everyone has been able to get out and enjoy the powder the past few weekends. I know at least four of our club members were able to attend the OSSA con-vention in LaPine. From the looks of the pictures they posted on Facebook, they had a great time.

Our grooming operators are averaging 4-5 days per week in our new cat. So far, they have been very successful at getting the trails in good shape. They tell me that the cat is comfortable and pow-erful. They have made it to some trails this year that have not been groomed in the past 5 years. We do still have some work to do on the trails as some of them are still too narrow for the new cat.

We are now up to 53 family memberships for this year and we hope to break 60 by the end of the season. Please talk to your riding friends about joining us.

We are very pleased that Andy Nelmes has decid-ed to join the board to fill our fifth spot. We are also very excited that Kristen Soyland has volun-

teered to be the Secretary of the club. Thank you to both Andy and Kristen for helping us out!

Our next club event is a ride at Annie Creek snow-park. We will meet at 10 a.m. to go for a ride and then we will have a potluck meal at the warming hut at 3 p.m. after the ride. We sure hope several of you will be able to join us.

Monica Miller and Kristen Soyland have volun-teered to be co-chairs for the Steak Fry at Four Corners snow park at Medicine Lake. This is sched-uled for Saturday February 11th. They will be working out all of the details, but we know we will be heading out for rides at 10 a.m. We plan to eat back at the warming hut at 3 p.m. The club will provide steaks and we are asking club members to bring a side dish to go along with the meal. This is a free meal for all club members. Non-members can choose to join the club or pay $10 per person for a steak meal.

Following the Steak Fry, we will have our next board meeting on Tuesday February 14th at American Marine and RV. The board meeting will

start at 6 p.m. and the general meeting will be at 7 p.m. This will be a potluck dinner meeting, so please bring something yummy to eat.

We have decided to host another youth snowmo-bile certification class at Klamath Basin Equip-ment. It will be on Tuesday January 24th at 4:30 p.m. Dave Miller will be instructing the class. Re-member that anyone who does not have a valid driver’s license needs to take this class before op-erating a snowmobile on the trails.

Wes French and Wes Adams will be co-chairs for the end of the year banquet. We will keep you posted on the details for the banquet when we know more. Please keep an eye on our website (www.kbsnowdrifters.org) and our Facebook page for the most updated information on club events, pictures, and the grooming report.

Please see the bottom of this newsletter for our most updated schedule of events.

North Santiam Snowmobile Club, Detroit, Oregon Happy 2017 Everyone

A tree was scheduled to be taken down the end of December, members of our club helped remove the tree, with 50% of the tree to be stored for use by our club at the warming hut up McCoy Creek.

Great work to all those that volunteered their time & chainsaws, a phenomenal group for sure.

We had some beautiful snow for our rides around Detroit. Though as the season progressed our road became very treacherous. Our group was unable to attend the OSSA convention because of our state of emergency with all the snow, that we received in Detroit. We were all very busy digging out & making access to our neighbors that were unable to help themselves.

A BIG congratulations go our to Dan Gregory, awarded “Dealer of the Year”.

February, March & April meeting will be held at Kane's Marina.

The road around Oregon have been unsafe to drive now & then.

Hope all of you & your family and friends, traveled safely and stayed warm.

Catch you next month.
