Inside this issue:

Our Savior’s Shared Journey

“The Love Month (But It’s Still Epiphany)”

The hearts are up.

They went up right after Christmas; and in some ways, that’s OK. Even though I

lamented the other week that our culture, by and large, ignores the Church Sea-

son of Epiphany and the greeting card and candy companies jump right to Val-

entine’s Day; the root message of the revealing Season of Epiphany and the cul-

tural season of Valentine’s is the same.

Love.

The cards you can buy for Valentine’s Day offer loving messages to just about

anybody you can imagine. Go look: it’s an awesome lesson in who we can love.

Many, many of those love wishes are not about romantic love. That is exactly the

force of the story of Jesus. And the story of Jesus is the continuation of the story of

God coming in love to the world and inviting the world back into that love. Epiph-

any’s invitation is to see the love of God, in Word, Sacrament, Jesus, sacred story

and then to love fully into that gift and example.

Valentine’s celebration encourages us to see Chocolate as an awesome way

to do that, and to be sure, there is something to that. But Epiphany reveals that

Jesus is better. Sharing Jesus. Loving like Jesus loves us. Knowing Christ so that oth-

ers know Him. Love with justice and healing. Love in feeding and housing. Love in

truth, real truth. Love through prayer. Love made real with hope and helping

hands. Love made real by inviting others into an experience of the celebration of

that love; maybe even in worship. Love demonstrated by giving. Love revealed

by looking for it in Scripture and beyond.

I wonder how it happened, that the card and candy companies settled on an

obscure saint to make an extra buck. And while part of me carries a healthy cyni-

cism into all that hoopla, there is a prophetic part of me that wants to shout:

“Exactly! Hah! Another Holiday to wish the world “happy” about! Another worldly

curse redeemed by the love and cross of Jesus!”

When I was youngster, long ago, Mom found two very interesting “Jesus” tap-

estries at some local store and brought them home. They had to be inexpensive,

because Dad’s income did not allow for frivolous spending. But they were heavy

and while not large (maybe 2 ft. by 4 ft at most) the fabric was hearty and the

colors vibrant. The one that is fixed most deeply in my memory is one that de-

picted (in what I have come to learn is Roman Catholic imagery) Jesus with his

hand on his heart, the heart displayed outside his body. As a young boy, I was

fascinated by the image, and wondered out loud to Mom: “Why is Jesus showing

us a Valentine?”

Mom was wise. While not privy to the meaning of the Roman Catholic imagery,

she had a sense that this was a witness to God’s love in Jesus. Exactly.

The hearts are up, yes indeed. May we see them in their pink and frilly glory

and heed their redeemed prophetic call to share all the love we can, beyond the

14th of the month.

I will be on that journey with you!

Hola,

Dave and I will be returning to the Dominican Re-

public to continue our mission to help the poor people of

Puerto Plata. Last year we accomplished the task of tak-

ing 57 families to the supermarket, that was through the

help of those who appreciate what we do.

This year, we are in need of financial help. Also chil-

dren’s clothing (no blue jeans please as it adds too much

weight to our suitcases.)

If anyone would like to contribute to our cause, we

would appreciate them by the end of January.

Thank you, Bobbie and Dave

this. A donation can be made to Our Savior’s with a note on the

memo line or on the envelope requesting that it go to Christina’s

seminary expenses. Your support will be greatly appreciated.

CHURCH NEWS

Haiti Mission Work I am going on a medical mission trip to Haiti from February 21st to March 7th, 2017. I am traveling with a group from the area. They work with a doctor and a clinic on the northern side of the island. The primary work is medical. But it is also a mission trip and each patient prays with a member of the team before see-ing the physicians, Sunday is spent attending the lo-cal church and working with a group called the Dor-cas women who do visitation to the sick and dying. If you would have interest in financially supporting this mission trip, donations can be made through Our Savior's with a note to apply the donation to Ministry in Medical Missions. Or, if you prefer, donations can be sent directly to Ministry in Medical Missions, c/o Marilyn Cluka, 3580 NW Townline Rd, Barnum MN 55707.

Good Stewards of our Environment

As Christians we want to be good stewards of the planet God gave us. Some ways we can do that are to be efficient with our utilities, re-cycle and minimize what we put in the trash that is not recyclable or not biodegradable. Some op-portunities to minimize our environmental footstep are: Utilities: Turn off the lights when done in a room and turn down the heat and fireplace in the Fireside Room when leaving. Dishes: The best option is to use washable coffee and juice cups. We really appreciate all of you who volunteer to serve coffee on Sunday mornings. We realize not everyone knows how to operate the dishwasher. So we would like to offer that if you are serving coffee and you do not operate the dishwasher it is still ok to use our washable coffee mugs. After serving just be sure all the dirty cups are car-ried back to the kitchen. You can leave them on the counter next to the dishwasher. Please also leave a note on the of-fice door. We have several members who have offered to either run all the cups through the dishwasher after second service or stop in Monday and do it. The next best option is paper plates and cups. Please use Styrofoam cups and plates only as a last resort as they are not biodegradable. Recycle: The preschool collects shiny paper as a fund raiser. Put shiny paper in the bin in the narthex. Please put other paper and cardboard in the blue waste baskets and bins and the garbage company will recycle.

Thank you, The Parish Planning Council

February 7 marks the 1 year anniversary of GIFT. It has been a year full of changes. Each Sunday, we see

familiar faces, new faces, and we miss some faces. But making a change as big as GIFT will do that. Looking back, I told myself it would be like this – lots of ups and downs. Some refusing to come, others supporting GIFT wholeheartedly and still other only willing to support from afar. And that’s alright. I encourage you to try GIFT by yourself, with your family or with a friend. Each week is different and you will meet new people of all ages and learn or maybe help teach someone about the love of Jesus.

In case you’ve forgotten GIFT stands for Generations In Faith Together. It means we are inviting everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, to spend time together learning and building faith and community. It is a time where the wonder of the child and the wisdom of the elder can be together. It is a time for families to build a faith journey together. It is a time for our church community to support each other.

In GIFT, we use Faith 5 as a foundational piece. We do this at the end of every GIFT and we want to see

everyone using Faith 5 in their home every day.

Want to try Faith 5 now? The steps are easy. Just follow the steps below every night in every home!

PPC Minutes

OSLC Parish Planning Council

Minutes for Tuesday December 20th, 2016

Present: Officers Cindy Haglin, Rich Krikava, Bruce Larson, Curtis Skowlund Ministry Team Representatives: Juli Lattner,

Christina Kadelbach , Carrie Rye, Brad Browers, Jan Larson, Chris Robinson, Pastor: Chris Hill.

President Cindy Haglin called the meeting to order at 7:01pm and Pastor Chris had an opening prayer and Devotion.

Review/Approve Last Meeting Minutes A motion was made by Bruce and seconded by Rich to approve the minutes as cor-

rected. The motion passed.

Treasurer’s Report - Bruce Larson

November is the first disappointing financial month in quite a while. Offering was $4300 short of budget and $10,000 less than

November 2015. Not sure when we made the push for an extra $15,000 to help balance out 2015, but that may be some of the

reason why we are so short of last November. This November was also the second lowest offering month this year, at a time

when I expect offering to be increasing each month towards year end. At the same time, rent was again short $1000 primarily due

to ISD 94.

For once expenses didn't help any either, coming in $1000 over plan. However, rather than an unexpected expense, this was be-

cause I budgeted both confirmation expenses and Christina's mileage expense throughout the year, but both landed almost entirely

in November.

The net result was a loss that was $6400 worse than planned. The good news is we are still ahead of YTD plan by $21,000

(although we have boiler and electronic signs bills yet to come).

Lutefisk Dinner final results ended up just under $1500 profit.

Endowment Committee Meeting They decided to make 3 distributions. $1700 to Voyagers Ministry. $1100 to Boiler Fund,

$900 to Seminary in Christina’s Name.

Synod is about $112k short of budget this year so far.

Motion made by Jan and seconded by Juli all in Favor.

Pastor’s Report – Pastor Chris

What can you do with the light you are given?

+ How do we respond to seemingly contradictory perceived needs of the people we are trying to serve with the Gospel?

Concern over using disposable cups…If you would like to use regular cups there are people that would do the dishes after if they

are left in the kitchen.

Staffing the Nursery? How do we do that.

The idea of having someone to coordinate Baptism aged kids through Confirmation doing things like Nursery and contact with

the young families.

A. Christian Ed – Juli Lattner

Our Savior's first ever inter generational Christmas Program was awesome! Thanks to Cindy Haglin and Kathy Rye for all of their

Sherri Waller.

E. Fellowship Team – Jan Larson

The Fellowship Team wrapped up the Giving Tree project. We received the names of 27 children from the Salvation Army. We

collected 81 gifts so each child would receive 3 gifts. All the ornaments were taken and all the gifts returned to the office. The

gifts are bagged up by family now and ready to deliver to the Salvation Army on Thurs Dec 22. Now there are ornaments on the

Giving Tree for gifts for the preschool and church kitchen supplies. The Christmas bake sale on Dec 18th was a huge success. We

had contributions from many members in addition to the Fellowship Team. We made $534 on the sale

Prayer Chain Please call the Church office with your prayer chain requests.

SIMPLY GIVING

For those of you who use Simply Giving for your offering, there are pink cards available in the pews for you to use. How it works: To show your support of using Simply Giving, place the card in the offering plate. It’s that easy. This gives other members a visual and reminder of the Simply Giving program. If you are not enrolled in Simply Giving, and would like to be, there are forms in the office, in the Narthex, and on our Church website. www.oursaviorscloquet.org

This is our 67th year of radio broadcasts on

WKLK!!

OUR SAVIORS CUPS FOR SALE Cups with the new Our Saviors logo are available for sale for $10 in the Fair Trade Store. Some have told us

that $10 is a bit expensive; however, the cups cost almost $6 to make, and this is a fundraiser.

Thank you to all who purchase cups! The Evangelism Team
