The Messenger

A Monthly Newsletter from Resurrection Lutheran Church

LEX ORANDI, LEX CREDENDI, LEX VIVENDI. (As we worship/pray, so we believe, so we live.)

I remember a few Latin phrases from my studies at the seminary. "Lex orandi, lex credendi" is one that has stuck

with me. "As we worship/pray, so we believe," is often how it's translated. It evokes this sense that what we say and

confess and pray and sing in worship reflects what we believe but also informs what and how we believe. It's a

phrase that often pops up when we talk about how important worship is, and how our liturgical tradition allows

space for us to encounter the divine mystery that is God through Word and Sacrament.

I recently stumbled upon an article by a Catholic deacon who adds the third part, "lex vivendi," so we live. We

worship. We believe. We live out that faith. Our lives as Jesus-followers are not about one hour on Sunday

mornings, our lives as Jesus-followers are about every day how we live, how we treat our neighbors, how we care

for creation and for self.

We know that God has called and named and claimed us, and so we respond. We confess, we believe, and so we

respond. In a world and at a time when one narrative suggests fear and exclusion, discrimination and dominance, we

live in ways that reflect love and peace, reconciliation and justice.

As this threefold profession/charge rang in my ears, I kept hearing and thinking of hymns that we sing in worship. I

know this list could go on, but here's a little medley as beginning.

I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light.

I Want to Follow Jesus.

~ Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) 815.

Lead me, guide me along the way; for if you lead me, I cannot stray.

Lord, let me walk each day with thee.

Lead me, O Lord, lead me. ~ELW 768

Take, oh, take me as I am;

summon out what I shall be;

set your seal upon my heart and live in me. ~ELW 814

We are called to act with justice,

we are called to love tenderly;

we are called to serve one another,

to walk humbly with God. ~ ELW 720

I wonder what songs or prayers or other pieces of the liturgy you would add to the list?

See you in worship,

Pastor Kelly

FROM MIC STUDENT CHRISTEPHOR GILBERT

Greetings siblings in Christ!

Standing here in the middle of Epiphany, it is with a heavy heart that I share that I will not be with you for the spring

semester. If you will remember at the end of the fall, my spouse, Donald, got an amazing job with a company called

Sweetwater in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and we packed up our Hyde Park apartment (and three cats) and moved to Indiana.

Now a commuter student, I attempted to work everything out so that I could continue my Ministry in Context

experience at Resurrection, but between classes, the commute, and my part time job with Extraordinary Lutheran

Ministries (ELM), I reluctantly began a conversation with our Field Education department at LSTC to see if there was

a chance I could switch to a congregation in or near Fort Wayne.

It goes without saying that my brief time worshiping and working with you has been amazing! I truly appreciate the

spirit of compassion that each of you continues to exhibit in your hospitality, your spirituality, and your commitment to

the Gospel. The history of Resurrection is one of acceptance and justice, from being open and affirming to the LGBTQ

community years before the ELCA made a Churchwide move of acceptance, to allowing women to vote on

congregational matters when they couldn’t even vote in political elections. And, based on the work I witness each of

you doing with your heart and your hands, I won't be surprised when those kinds of firsts continue to mark the

landscape of your journey as you bring the Word and the Meal to those in your midst.

Thank you again for a wonderful few months! From working with the confirmation students, to participating with you

in God’s Work, Our Hands Sunday at the Night Ministry; from the great feedback you gave on my preaching, to the

way each of you brought me into the life of the church—these things I will hold in my heart and for them I will always

be grateful. You will see me around as I continue to do my work with ELM. I should be at the office most Thursdays.

If you are around Lakeview, stop by and come upstairs: I’d love to catch up.

As it says in one of my favorite poems, “Wild Geese,” by Mary Oliver:

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,

the world offers itself to your imagination,

calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting—

over and over announcing your place

in the family of things.

We are all, the Body of Christ, these wild geese, flapping, and squawking, and reminding each other that we are

community.

In the Peace of Christ,

These prayers are written or selected by members of our Stewardship Team

for use in Sunday worship and for personal prayer.

January 8

God of love and compassion, we hold before you those who are homeless and cold especially in this bitter

weather. Draw near, comfort and shield them from the elements. Bless those who work to provide the

homeless with shelter, food and friendship. May your grace touch the lives and spirits of those less

fortunate. Fill their hearts with hope for the future with a better, safer and more secure life.

January 15

O God, ruler of all nations, please guide the leaders of our country as we inaugurate a new president this

Friday. Help each of us to remember that, regardless of how we voted, our new president needs our prayers

for God’s gifts of wisdom and righteousness. Adapted from Kathryn Kleinhans in Christ in our Home, 4th quarter of 2016.

January 22

Almighty God, you have called us to labor in your vineyard. As we prepare for our annual Congregational

Meeting next Sunday strengthen us so that by your Spirit our thoughts and actions may be rooted and

grounded in your love for us, our neighborhood and city, our state and country and the world.

January 29

Almighty God, we lift before you all who govern this state of Illinois. May those who hold power

understand that it is a trust from you to be used, not for personal glory or profit, but for the service of the

people. Drive us from cynicism, selfishness, and corruption; grant in your mercy just and honest

government; and give us grace to live together in unity and peace. From Evangelical Lutheran Worship, page 77.

Dear Resurrection Lutheran Church Community,

On behalf of all of the children, staff, and families of the

Preschool and Toddler Programs here at Resurrection, I want to

say thank you for the grant that will help with the expense of a

new school Mosaic that will be installed by the door entrances on

School St. With these funds we will be able to install a colorful

Mosaic of a tree along with the Resurrection Preschool name.

School St. is a very busy area with lots of traffic and we think a

Mosaic will be great way to have more visibility for our school

and church! So thank you to the Resurrection church community

as well as the Mission Endowment Committee for your support

and graciousness. It is very appreciated!

All the best in 2017!

Debbie Mytych,Director
