Parish Office HoursMonday - Friday

8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. ********************************************************

Dear Friends,

We had a very good parish meeting on the 15th of January.Congratulations to those elected to the vestry: Ben Benvenutti andLane Debardeleben. We heard some reports that reflect ourcommitment to the ministry and mission of our Lord throughChrist Church. The vestry shared the 2017 budget which totals$164,291.50. This is up from $154,464.00.

At the organizational meeting of the vestry it was announced thatMarcie Baria has been appointed Sr. Warden and Megan Martinezappointed Jr. Warden for 2017. Sally Johnson was electedtreasurer and Susan Stevens was elected clerk.

At its January meeting the vestry set February 10 and 11 as thedates for a vestry planning week end. We will begin working on afive-year strategic plan which will involve the entire parish in boththe planning and implementation. As I said at the parish meeting astrategic plan is important for at least two reasons: (1) strategicplans, if taken seriously, are a major element in the growth anddeepening of people's spiritual journey and (2) it will help us designand implement a plan of shared ministry between the priest and thecongregation. Please be ready to assist the vestry in this importanteffort.

The 190th Annual Council of the Diocese of Mississippi meetsFebruary 3 - 5 at the Jackson Convention Complex. Our delegatesare: Scott Bagley, Megan Martinez, and Elizabeth Register. Ouralternate is Sandra Bagley. Please keep Council in your prayers.

I remind you that Lent begins on Wednesday, March 1st. On thatday we will have a service of Imposition of Ashes with the HolyEucharist beginning at 6:00 p.m. There will be more about Lent inthe next newsletter.

We presently offerstring orchestra and small ensembles in grades four through twelve. Inaddition, we will offer full orchestra at the high school level. It is our goalto produce an outstanding orchestra, to develop in each student anappreciation of the art of music as part of general culture, to discover anddevelop the talents of students in the field of orchestral music, and todevelop students' knowledge and skills of listening to orchestra music, aswell as reading and performing orchestral music throughout their life.

Visual Artist ~ 5:00 PM

Penelope Wallace Crawford Penny was born and raised in Louisiana. Educated at LSU and USL,Penny and her family eventually moved to Slidell, LA where they remainedfor 38 years. They moved to Diamondhead, MS just in time for hurricaneKatrina. Drawing and an interest in nature were always a part of Penny'slife. With both parents being artistic, and no formal training, Penny wasinspired to continue a variety of expressions from portraits to botanicalsto marsh scenes to local icons. Learning about different mediums has alsobeen an ongoing process. Portraits of people, pets or houses are workedin charcoal, pen and ink or pastel. Botanical paintings of plant materialsare drawn in pen and ink and painted in vibrant watercolor. Crabs and localfish are painted using acrylic paint or watercolor and marsh scenes arepainted using pastels inherited from her dad. A love of detail is the highlight of much of Penny's work. As an avidgardener, wildflower enthusiast and observer of nature, Penny strives tobring those elements to life on paper or canvas. Her botanical paintingsare drawn from living plant material and include not only the beautiful colorand shape of the plants, but also may include bug holes and tears thatoccur naturally. As influenced by her Master Flower Show Judge training, arranging and staging of the plant material is also an important factor in herbotanical paintings. An interest in sharing her techniques has led her toteach classes on Botanical Watercolor Painting and acrylic painting. Another type of painting has interested Penny for many years, murals. Ofcourse this type of work is just the opposite of her detailed botanicals. She has painted everything from a Delft tile kitchen back splash, to theexterior wall of a school gym, to faux brick in a bathroom, to the end wallinside the East Hancock Library, to the side of an old tin shed in the BaySt. Louis Community Garden. The permanence and scale of these projectsis part of the fun. Penny has been a member of The Arts Hancock County in Mississippi andthe St. Tammany Pastel Society in Louisiana. Her work has been onexhibit in public buildings in Bay St. Louis, MS and Slidell, LA. Some ofher paintings are currently on display in the East Hancock Library andDonated works have gone to support The Mississippi Gulf CoastPilgrimage, Breast Cancer Support and other local charities and publicfund raisers.
