February 2018

Dear Parent(s):

Loudoun County Kindergarten Registration has been scheduled for Wednesday, March 21, 2018, from 9:00 –11:30 a.m. and 12:00 – 2:30 p.m. Virginia law requires any student who will be five (5) years old on or before September 30, 2018, to register and attend Kindergarten.

First day of school for the 2018-19 school year will be August 23, 2018. If your child is currently attending LCPS you will NOT need to "re-register" or "pre-register" your child for the 2018-19 school year.

You will have two options available when registering your student for the 2018-19 school year!

Option: Online Pre-registration process opens February 20, 2018, for the 2018-19 school year. You can access the online Pre-Registration portal at http://www.lcps.org/site/Default.aspx?PageID=1012. Also, available on this page are necessary registration forms, helpful videos and additional how-to documents. Registration appointments for grades KG-5 will be accepted by contacting the school once the pre-registration is complete. Registration will not be finalized until all documentation has been accepted in person by the school. Contact your school for available appointment options.

Option 2: Walk-in registration for parents who have not pre-registered will be held on Wednesday, March 21 at the above times. Please print the necessary forms available at the above link or pick up from the school’s office.

If you have a child who will enroll in kindergarten at Sterling Elementary, please complete the form below and return it to the school with one of your other children.

If you have a neighbor who does not have school age children but will have a child entering Kindergarten for the 2018-2019 school year, please ask them to request a survey form from the school, or allow them to use this one if you do not need it.

Please detach the bottom of this letter and return to Sterling Elementary School.

The Value of Thinking Creatively

The SEARCH program organizes its curriculum around the 5 Thinking Keys: Perceiving, Connecting, Reasoning,

Creating, and Evaluating. Perhaps your child has come home and mentioned that he/she used their connecting key

that day in SEARCH to solve a puzzle or applied their reasoning key to solve a problem. Quite often, perhaps, your

child mentions that the day’s SEARCH lesson focused on using our creating key. Why is creative thinking so im-

portant in the SEARCH curriculum?

We as adults face problems every day that we have not faced before. In addition, these real world problems simply

do not have one right answer. We need to be creative in order to address the problems we face each and every day

in order to be successful individuals. In an article in Psychology Today, Dr. Peter Gray highlights the importance

of both parents and educators to encourage creative thinking (http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/freedom-

learn/201209/children-s-freedom-has-declined-so-has-their-creativity ). As you think about activities and experi-

ences for your child, provide time for creative opportunities to expand your child’s mind in different ways in order

to help them explore as well as providing experiences to overcome challenges and failures.

Starting February 20, LCPS will begin accepting referrals from parents of third, fourth and fifth grade students for

gifted education services for the 2018-2019 school year. We will be accepting these referrals until March 2. Please

feel free to contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions about the process or please feel free to at-

tend the Gifted Information Session at Forest Grove on Tuesday, February 22 at 7:00 in the multi-purpose room.

www.psychologytoday.com/blog/freedom-learn/201209/children-s-freedom-has- declinó-tan-tiene-su-creatividad).

Flu Facts: A Guide for Parents

Loudoun County Public Schools

What is the flu?

Influenza (also known as flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. Flu is different from a cold, and usually comes on suddenly. Each year flu viruses cause mil-lions of illness, hundreds of thousands of hospital stays and tens of thousands of death in the United States.

How serious is flu?

While flu illness can vary from mild to severe, children often need medical care because of flu. Children younger than 5 years and children of any age with certain long-term health problems are at high risk of flu complications like pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus and ear infections. Some health problems that are known to make children more vulnerable to flu include asthma, diabetes and disorders of the brain or nervous system. The flu vaccine is safe and helps protect your child from the flu. Your doctor may also prescribe other medication that may also help your child. It is important to notify your child’s doctor if your child experiences any symptoms that are includ-ed below.

How does flu spread?

Most experts believe flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when someone with the flu coughs, sneezes or talks. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly inhaled into the lungs. A person can also get the flu by touching something that has flu virus on it and then touching their mouth, eyes, or nose.

What are flu symptoms?

Flu symptoms can include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, feeling tired and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea (more common in children than adults). Some people with the flu will not get a fever.

What if my child seems very sick?

Even healthy children can get very sick from flu. If you child is experiencing the following emergency warnings signs you should go to the emergency room or call 911.

Fast breathing or trouble breathing

Bluish or gray skin color

Not drinking enough fluids (not going to the bathroom or not making as much urine as they normally do)

Severe or persistent vomiting

Not waking up or not interacting

Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held

Flu symptoms improve, but then return with fever and worse cough

Fever with rash

Information provided by the CDC

Children should NOT return to school until they have been free of a fever for at least 24 hours without taking

fever-reducing medication!

Notes from the Clinic

The cold and flu season is now upon us! Children can get very sick from these viruses. It can be uncomfortable for a child to sit in the class-

room and concentrate when they are feeling ill.

If your child is sick in the morning with a fever or has been up all night feeling ill, please stay home with him/her.

Remember to call our attendance line (571-434-4581) if your child will be absent. This is very important to keep our records up to date.

If your child comes to the clinic feeling sick, I will do my best to determine the severity of their illness. I will take their temperature and talk it

over with them. Sometimes it is very difficult to decide the best course of action. I will contact you to discuss their health. Between the two of

us, we will find the best way to help your child.

There are many over-the-counter medications that can be given to ease the symptoms of a respiratory virus. If your child has slight discomfort

from congestion or a runny nose, we can give medicine that you bring from home here in school. Please remember two things about this:

AN ADULT MUST BRING ANY MEDICINE TO SCHOOL. Children are not allowed to transport any medicine by themselves. A medication

authorization form must be completed by the parent.

THE CLINIC DOES NOT HAVE ANY COLD MEDICINE FOR YOUR CHILD. If you want your child to have medicine, you must provide it for

him/her.

Thanks for your continuing support in the caring of your child.

Happy Valentine’s Day
