Jesus’ words today make it very clear how we are to live as his followers.

“Love your enemies” … “do good to those who curse you” ... “pray for those who mistreat you” ... “give to everyone who asks of you (and)

don’t demand it back” … “Stop judging” … “Forgive and you will be forgiven.”

Jesus doesn’t lighten our responsibility, rather, he restates his teaching emphasizing that the extent to which we are willing to follow/live his words is what will be returned to us. Appeal. Collectively, we are all responsible for the financial wellbeing of the Church throughout the Archdiocese. We ask that you prayerfully consider making a generous gift to this year’s Appeal. More information about the Appeal can be found in today’s bulletin and online at www.bostoncatholicappeal.org.

Second Collection This Week This week’s second collection will support the Church in underdeveloped areas of the world: Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the Church in Africa and in Central and Eastern Europe and three important national Catholic missions: the Military Archdiocese, Home Missions, and the Black and Indian Missions. Your generosity will help fund the spiritual, educational and humanitarian needs of the Church around the world. Visit the Holy Land with Us

Collette Tours will be here on Tuesday, March 12 at 6:00pm in the Hall for a Holy Land presentation . Anyone planning on attending or interested in finding out additional information are invited to attend.

When my oldest son graduated from Providence College in 2004, Archbishop Sean O’Malley was the commencement speaker. As Boston Catholics we were proud to have our Bishop so prominent at such an important event in our family life. In Massachusetts, we were still reeling from the scandals that were uncovered by the Boston Globe’s Spotlight Team in 2002. O’Malley had been appointed to the Archdiocese of Boston in 2003, and for over fifteen years, the Cardinal has worked to implement the policy of zero-tolerance for the abuse of minors. Here in our parish, we adopted and practiced these guidelines as well. Anyone who has contact with children is subjected to a Cori search and a background check. Our catechists undergo prevention training and educational material is incorporated into our curriculum. As with the Scout guidelines, our classes are team taught on Sundays when there is plenty of supervision available. Any extracurricular service projects are done in groups with parents and teachers monitoring the students. Fr. John has made sure that we have transparency and accountability in everything that we do. As we listen to the media reports again this week, we want to assure you that the safety of our children is our primary focus. We always welcome and encourage your input and presence in the classrooms. It would be easy and understandable to walk away from the Church now. But here at St. John’s, we simply try to live as Jesus did; in service to others at home, in the community and in the world. And further we try to grow in our spiritual life so that we can strengthen our relationship with God. Every catechist and volunteer associated with the Faith Formation Program is committed to helping our children understand what living as disciples of Jesus means. We are at a turning point in our Church, and these young people will be the future leaders of tomorrow. It is imperative that we make sure they receive the formation they will need to make morally sound decisions. That is a job for all of us, parents, grandparents, catechists, and those who lead the Church.

From the Desk of Father John At our February Parish Staff meeting we reviewed all that we be doing during lent including some of our events. The schedule for lent will be out the weekend before Ash Wednesday. Please include all these on your own calendar including: Our parish mission on April 7,8,and 9.

Given to us by Fr John Tokaz O.F.M, Cap.

April 11 there is a penance service at Sacred Heart in Roslindale at 7:30 for area parishes.

Please buy tickets for the Saint Patrick celebration on March 16 at 5:30. The tickets are going fast.

Simple Supper on Fridays at 6:00pm $7 donation We discussed some of the spring projects including outside painting, fixing the gutters outside and having a new parish sign done since the present one is rotting. We are getting ready for our Easter food collection along with baskets for our donations for the Easter hams. As you see with what is taking place in our parish volunteers are needed if you have any extra time please call the office with your name and a phone number. We are also collecting books that will go to a book bank that will help our young. All books are welcome. There will be bins on the first floor for the book collection. In March we are having Mary’s stations of the cross, we need fifteen people to make this happen. I am so grateful for all you do to make Saint John’s the dynamic parish it is. I always find it interesting the way the readings seem to come up at such an appropriate time, in this case just a week before Lent. Luke’s reading is one that you want to say “Do you hear the message?” Do you understand what it means to love your enemies? Get this one and pray for those who mistreat you. It seems as if we have to be passive to follow Christ. It feels like it is ok to be stepped on. Oh then it gets better, Do to others as you would have them do to you. Let’s go further in the reading, Stop judging and you will not be judged. Forgive and you will be forgiven. These statements in the readings come at a good time. We are preparing ourselves for Lent which takes place on March 6. Don’t talk about what you are doing, DO IT! I think that it has to start with forgiveness and idle gossip. Don’t harbor anything against another no matter what and stop talking about people behind their back. I read once that a preacher said that it is like the death penalty, ripping someone up. One’s reputation is all they have. If its anger and our world is filled with it , there is always time to change, even if you have a temper. Get rid of it, anger leads to more pain and destruction. Let God and live

The book Lenten Longings will guide our discussion and has everything you need to know. The overall theme is going to be “Seeing With God’s Eyes”. The atmosphere will be relaxed and welcoming. We will be open to the Holy Spirit, seeking to grow in faith this Lent and grow in relationship with God. Last year it was a great experience and we look forward to more people joining in this year. Give it a try and call Mary Campion to get a book. Cost of materials is $8.
