Using Narrative in the Training of Professionals Serving Elders: A Conceptual Approach

Dr. Maureen Gibney*

Drexel University Department of Psychology, USA

Abstract

Many health and social service professionals who work with frail elders know well that

their clients have histories that long precede their current needs. However, in the often-

pressured settings in which care is given that knowledge may slip down the scale of

importance. Using fictional cases and engaging in fictional story-building in trainings can help

professionals take time to bring the awareness of the whole person into the foreground. This

presentation will review the origins and current understandings of narrative theory in general,

and will draw from psychology, medicine, ethics, nursing, and social service in exploring in

particular the topic of loss and suffering as experienced within the last epoch of life. The use of

narrative themes such as meaning making, agency and communion, generativity, pain, and

redemption allows for a finely grained analysis of late-life sources of suffering, their

resolution, and the acceptance of their continuation when resolution is not possible. Writing

about complex aging can help inform the professional practice of those working with frail

elderly across a range of care settings, while bringing into high relief a greater sense of the

fullness of the lives of those they serve.

Abstract

Oral fluency is one of the more difficult variables to track and to measure in L2 speech.

This paper reports on an empirical study to identify how fluency in both monologues and

dialogues changes over three ranges of proficiency as marked by the TOEIC standardized test.

Twenty-seven Japanese students were asked to give a self-introduction monologue, which was

then followed by a three-question dialogue. Based on the TOEIC scores of these participants,

three groups were formed, with the first group having scores that ranged from 150 to 370, the

second from 371 to 570, and the third from 571 to 770. The interactions were videotaped and

transcribed with the transcriptions making up the Japanese University Student Fluency Corpus

(JUSFC2018), which has 23,539 words. Research questions focused on significant differences

among the three groups concerning the variables of monologue speaking time, dialogue

speaking time, total speaking time, articulation rate, speaking rate, and number of words

spoken, and mean length runs. Results showed that for the first two proficiency groups

monologue speaking time, speaking rates, and the number of words spoken showed significant

differences, whereas in comparing the second and third proficiency groups, no significant

differences were found. Furthermore, fluency showed a descrease on all variables with the

highest proficiency group.

Abstract

This study highlights the issue of gender stereotyping with emphasis on the linguistic

aspect. It identifies the male and female characters linguistic features based on Holmes (2006)

theory of masculine and feminine style of interaction and analyses whether the characters

conform or challenge the gender stereotype using Eaglys (1987) Social Role Theory. The

findings demonstrate that the protagonists employed the linguistic features as cited by Holmes

(2006) in their interactions. The male protagonists are observed to fit the agentic role whereas

the female protagonist is noted to fit the communal role, hence proving that they conform to

gender stereotypes. It is also shown that social psychology factors such as normative social

influence and the presence of others caused the protagonists to conform to gender stereotypes.

Fabrication of BaTiO3 Nanoparticles with Different Nanosizes By Hydrothermal

Synthesis For Microwave Absorption

Qing-Qing Ni*

Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Technology, Shinshu University, 3-15-1 Tokida, Ueda, Nagano 386-8576, Japan

Abstract

Different sizes of BaTiO3 nano-particles were synthesized from precursor H2TiO3

nanotubes through facile two-step hydrothermal synthesis by using ethyl alcohol/distilled water

(EtOH/H2O) as mixing solvent. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy was mainly used

to investigate the effects of solution polarity on BaTiO3 nanoparticles evolution. BaTiO3

particles with the average diameters of approximately 20 and 50 nm were firstly obtained in

9:1 and 1:1 EtOH/H2O (v/v) hydrothermal medium, respectively. By comparison, the size of

BaTiO3 particles prepared in pure distilled water medium reached up to 500 nm. For reason,

addition of EtOH can lower the polarity of hydrothermal medium caused and make the

medium reach to supersaturation more easily, thus limiting the size growth of the cracked

particles. By adjusting EtOH/H2O volume ratios and hydrothermal temperature, BaTiO3

nanoparticles with the average sizes of approximately 20, 50, 80, 110, 160, 280, and 500 nm

have been obtained, respectively, and more different controllable sizes can be expected by

further adjustment. The microwave absorption characteristic of those BaTiO3 nano-particles

was evaluated in the frequency range of 0.1-18 GHz by measuring their permittivity and

permeability. The results indicated that the reflection loss increased with the decreasing

particle sizes. The mechanism of was finally analyzed.

Effect of Glycine as a Surfactant on the Structural and Morphological Attributes of

SILAR Derived Copper Oxide Thin Films

Halit Cavusolu*

Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, Selcuk University, Konya, Turkey

Abstract

Solution based successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) technique has

been employed to deposit nanocrystalline copper oxide (CuO) thin films with different rates of

glycine on soda-lime microscope glass slides. In order to improve the crystalline quality of the

films, the as-deposited films were annealed at 673 K for an hour in an air atmosphere. The

impacts of various concentrations of glycine from 0 to 2.0 M on the structural and

morphological properties of CuO thin films were studied. Deposited films were characterized

by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and metallurgical microscope (MM) measurements. The

orientation of crystallization, crystallite sizes and important microstructural parameters were

obtained by using XRD analysis. XRD studies showed that all deposited CuO thin films having

different glycine concentrations were polycrystalline with a monoclinic structure. It was

revealed through MM images that the nanometer-sized grains were well-covered on the surface

of the substrates. An increase in the concentration of glycine resulted in an alteration of the

uniformity of the CuO thin films. In conclusion, the growth mechanism of SILAR deposited

CuO thin films was found to be dependent on glycine concentration.

Influence of Thiourea Concentration on Morphological and Structural Characteristics of

SILAR Deposited CuO Films

Rasit AYDIN*

Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, Selcuk University, Konya, Turkey

Abstract

The aim of this research is to investigate the effect of thiourea concentration on

morphological and structural properties of the deposited CuO films. CuO nanostructures

deposited onto soda-lime glass substrates are obtained by successive ionic layer adsorption and

reaction (SILAR) method at room temperature using different thiourea concentrations. The

morphological and structural properties of these films have been studied using metallurgical

microscope (MM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. From the MM pictures, it was

seen that the surface morphological structure of the films was clearly altered by thiourea

addition. The XRD results displayed that all the coated films exhibited polycrystalline nature

with monoclinic crystal structure. XRD designs denoted the advance in crystallinity of CuO for

thiourea assisted films.

Fabrication of Gold Nanoparticle Array via Laser Ablation in Liquid and

Electrophoretic Deposition

June Sik Hwang*

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Daejeon 34141,

Korea Abstract

Periodic metal nanostructures play an important role in a variety of fields such as

plasmonic sensors, catalysts, and photovoltaics. In this paper, we present a simple, low-cost

fabrication method for controllable metal nanoparticle (NP) array. Periodic Au NP array was

prepared by the electrophoretic deposition of Au NPs with the patterned dielectric layer. Au

NPs were generated from laser ablation in liquid and photoresist nanohole layer was fabricated

by laser interference lithography. Depending on the parameters of the process, Au NP arrays

had various structural conditions such as the periods and diameters which affected the

electromagnetic property of the structure. From a finite-difference time domain (FDTD)

simulation, the electric field enhancement ratio depending on the structural conditions was

predicted and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) measurement, which was conducted

as an application example of Au NP array, showed similar signal intensity trends according to

the different periods and diameters of Au NP arrays. Additionally, the fabricated Au NP array

with a rough surface is found to have higher sensitivity when its Raman intensity was

compared to Au nanostructure based on the thermal vacuum deposition. The proposed method

is a simple, inexpensive process which produces metal nanoparticle array under ambient

condition. This advantageous fabrication strategy is expected to facilitate various applications

of the periodic Au NP structure.
