Fr. Bob’s Statement:

As you have heard, the Archdiocese of Newark released information regarding clergy (priests and deacons), who have been credibly accused of sexual abuse of minors. The archdiocese has created a special website, https://healing.rcan.org, dedicated to this topic. The list of credibly accused clergy, as well as other information regarding the sexual abuse crisis can be found there. This information has been made available as part of the archdiocese’s commitment to be transparent to help bring healing to the victims and to help restore trust in the leadership of the Catholic Church.

The clergy, who are listed, have been permanently removed from ministry. The list includes each of those clergy members’ assignments, regardless of which parish he was assigned to when the abuse took place. One of the priests on the list, Michael M. Walters, was briefly assigned to Sacred Heart as a Parochial Vicar, from June 1991 to June 1992. The accusations against him, which were made in 2015 and 2016, took place in two other parishes during the 1980s and 1990s. No accusations were forthcoming from Sacred Heart. During this difficult period in our Church, let us pray for all victims of clergy sexual abuse and for one another.

Just be Good to Others

A few weeks ago the mother of one of our parish members

passed away. Her daughter was telling us about the beautiful

eulogy her niece read at the funeral and shared a copy of it with

me. In recounting her last conversation with her grandmother her

niece shared, “One thing stands out from that conversation - which was to be the last conversation I had

alone with her - she kept repeating to me the following: ‘Just be good to others. That’s all you have to do!

Then everything will be fine!’ As I recall, she said it three times, at various points in the conversation,

often seemingly thrown into the conversation out of context. She seemed set on communicating this

point, which I now understand to be, perhaps, parting words of advice and great wisdom.”

I was struck by these simple words of urgency that actually sum up today’s readings. David could have

chosen to kill King Saul but did not to do so out of respect and then in the Gospel we hear all types of

suggestions by Jesus to choose the “higher road”, the less selfish and more generous choice for

goodness. Most of us really KNOW deep down inside, and have actually EXPERIENCED, the gift of simply

being good to others. The goodness actually returns to us in one form or another! We realize that being

truly good in thought, word and action IS the real secret to harmony and peace .

Goodness is an innate gift from God. It is a gift of the soul and one that is meant to be fostered and

nourished by others early in life. As we grow older, we learn to make our own choices to grow in

goodness , always quietly directed by the Holy Spirit, the Author of Goodness Itself! It’s always our

decision– like following the hard choice of David when the enemy was right in his hands or the hard

choices Jesus outlined for us through unselfish service.

Above all the information, reading, worrying, planning and investing - maybe we each need to really

heed the wise grandmother’s insistent parting words to her granddaughter, “ Just be good to others.
