FROM THE PASTOR, FR. ANTHONY MENDOZA

Marriage: Naturally a Life-Giving Gift of Self There are currently very different ideas of what constitutes a marriage. But, as was discussed in last week’s column, most everybody would agree that marriage involves two persons making some kind of gift of themselves to each other to become united to each other, and that this union involves some kind of physical intimacy. The column also discussed the important meaning of every true gift: that it must be given freely, completely, and unconditionally, or else it is not a gift. In reference to marriage, this means that the gift of self in marriage must be made freely, with no force or pressure to marry. It means that the gift of self in marriage must be given unconditionally, that is, for as long as both spouses remain alive. And it means that the gift of self in marriage must be given completely. So the complete gift of self in marriage must include the gift of one’s fertility, the willingness of the spouses to accept children who are the fruit of their mutual gift of themselves to each other and the acceptance by themselves of each other. This gift of their fertility to each another is only possible in the union of a man and a woman. When a woman and a man make a true gift of themselves to each another in marriage, this gift naturally has an characteristic which is not found in the gift of a thing: The mutual gift of self in marriage is life-giving! This is true in three ways: 1). The spouses are truly making a complete gift of their lives to each other. Only a person, that is, somebody who has reason and free will, can truly make the gift of himself/herself to another. The only one worthy of receiving such a gift is another person. That is why animals cannot marry. 2). When a person knows that his/her spouse is making such a great gift to himself/herself, in a real sense that gives new life to that person. The complete gift of self is the greatest gift that anybody can give to another. Knowing “my spouse believes I am worth the complete gift of himself/herself” in a way gives new life to each of the spouses. 3). The physical intimacy (sexual union) of marriage is open to the new life of children who are the fruit of that marital union. This is true because this physical intimacy of persons has a very important natural meaning that is exclusive to persons. Animals can do many of the same actions done by persons, but the actions done by persons can have an entirely different meaning. A dog can be taught to shake hands, but for the dog the meaning is limited to its desire for a doggie treat it will receive! When two persons shake hands, the meaning can be completely different: friendship, respect, or even a promise between two government leaders of peace between their peoples. As persons, we should be true to the natural meaning of our actions.

When a person kisses another person, there is a natural meaning of re-spect, affection or love. But one person can kiss another without this meaning. A famous example was when Judas told the guards to arrest the person he would kiss (Mt. 26:47-50). His kiss, which should have signified respect, was instead his means of betrayal. Judas was not true to the natural meaning of his kiss, and this made it hurtful. The natural meaning of the sexual intercourse of persons is their mutual gift of self, which can only be true when the man and woman are married. In that marital act, with their bodies they are saying, “I make a complete gift of myself to you, I accept you as a

complete gift to myself, I want to become one with you.” Their physical union is therefore a sign and celebration of their mutual gift of self by which they are united in marriage. That is why their sexual union, if it is true, must be in accord with the full meaning of marriage: as a freely given gift of self, as an unconditional gift of self, as a complete gift of self (including fertility), and as a life-giving gift of self (open to the new life of children). Note that to this point we have only been considering the natural meaning of marriage! [To be continued]
