DearFriends, Some tasks can seem so overwhelmingwhenwe consider them, thatwemaywonder how anyone has thecouragetotrythem. DevelopChristianfriendships.

In today’s Gospel (Luke: 4:21-30), Jesus shows us that we are called to place gospel values before any other values and to be willing to put our lives on the line for

them. Taking care of God’s poor is indeed living gospel values. Is God calling you to join the Society of St. Vincent de Paul?

No matter what simple origins we might have, our living the gospel is what should shape our everyday choices. We all are called to place gospel values before all other values and, like Jesus, be willing to put our lives on the line for them. For this reason, we must strive to act according to the maxims of Christ, never according to those of the world. With this thought, the members of OLV’s SVdP Conference share the following prayer:

We pray for the grace to proclaim the gospel in our lives, May we live the values that Jesus taught. We pray that our words and actions bear witness to Christ, May we live the values that Jesus taught. We pray that we may bring hope and healing to the sick and suffering. May we live the values that Jesus taught. Amen

If you are interested in knowing more about the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, please contact us by leaving your name and contact information on the OLV SVdP Hotline at (248) 349-2622 or e-mail to: [email protected] and a Vincentians will contact you. Or join us at our next SVdP meeting on Tuesday, February 12, at 7:00 p.m., in the St. John XXIII Room.

Evangelization Those looking for answers to big questions, such as what God’s plan is for their life and how they can be fulfilled, are invited to

Kerygma Nights. This four-part series will share the core of what the Gospel reveals through short talks, discussion, and Q & A with others asking these same questions.

Attendees may go to one or all of the Kerygma Nights, which began in January and are being held on different days at three locations in the Archdiocese: Mondays at Sacred Heart Parish, in Dearborn (February 4, 11, and 18), Tuesdays  (in Spanish)  at the National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica, in Royal Oak (February 5 and 12), and Wednesdays at Jolly Pumpkin Restaurant and Tap House in Royal Oak (February 6, 13, 20, and 27). Each event is from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Kerygma Nights are a program of the archdiocesan Office of Evangelization. Your CSA gifts support the office’s work of helping people encounter God in a new way.

OLV Presents: The Bishop Barron Study ‘Mystery of God’ Wednesdays, 7-8:45 p.m.—starting February 6

This is a Bishop Barron study. The content varies from prior Barron studies which may have had overlapping content. It is recommended that you review the first lesson before class begins. There is limited space. Register early. Workbooks are spiral bound and available at Amazon or at Word on Fire (www.mysteryofgod.wordonfire.org)

Atheism is on the rise. Skeptical thinkers attack belief in God as irrational or, even worse, dangerous. The so-called New Atheism has attracted millions of young people thanks to bestselling books such as The God Delusion and God Is Not Great. How should Christians respond? How can we turn the tide of secularism and draw people back to God? In The Mystery of God: Who God Is and Why He Matters, Bishop Robert Barron reaches into our rich intellectual tradition to teach us how. Using the insights of St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, Pope Benedict XVI, he uncovers a clear yet sophisticated understanding of what we mean by “God.”

On Wednesday, February 6, our Parish will begin the Mystery of God: Who God Is and Why He Matters, program. This weekly, 6-week program (no session on Ash Wednesday) will run on Wednesdays from 7:00-8:45 p.m., in the John XXIII room. To find out more information or to register, please contact Nancy Tochman at [email protected] or stop by the Parish Office to sign up. A short trailer about the program is also available on the OLV Parish website.

Keep Our Youth in Your Prayers: 2019 World Youth Day Celebration This past week was the celebration of World Youth Day 2019 (January 22-27), in

Panama City, Panama. It is an international Catholic event focused on religious faith and youth. Started by Pope St. John Paul II, the first WYD was held in 1986 in Rome. Held every two to three years, WYD has been held on five different continents with registered attendance from 300,000 to over 2 Million! The concluding Mass often brings in additional crowds with a high of 5 Million in Manila (1995).

A little side note. Certainly not all young people can go to a World Youth Day, but every two years in the United States there is a country wide gathering of youth called the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC). It is a great experience for youth to

encounter Jesus through teens from every diocese in the country. The next one is coming up next November 21 thru 24, 2019 (the week before Thanksgiving) and will be held in Indianapolis. More information will be coming, but I’d like to plant the seed in our OLV teens to consider attending this event.
