MESSAGES

For almost 50 years, the WHL has been a leading supplier of player talent to the National Hockey League. For decades, the WHL has also been the number one provider of hockey scholarships in Western Canada and a leading source of talent for Canada’s national hockey teams.

The WHL takes great pride in being a world leader in player development, with all of our 22 WHL Clubs helping set the standard for providing the best possible player experience. Whether it is in the area of player safety education, on ice or off ice development, the WHL is recognized as one of the leaders in the hockey industry.

As we get ready to open another exciting WHL campaign, we want to express our sincere thanks to the close to 4 million fans who attend WHL regular season and playoff games each season. Your loyal support allows our WHL Clubs to be in a position to offer our players a world class experience.

Many thanks to our corporate partners and broadcasters for their support as it also allows us to continue delivering a highly competitive and entertaining product each season for our players and fans alike to benefit from.

Best wishes for a most successful 2014‐15 WHL season!

Ron RobisonCommissionerWestern Hockey League

Greetings from the WHL

A Welcome from the President

Welcome back to another exciting year of Kootenay ICE Hockey. The start of every hockey season always brings optimism and hope and the 2014-2015 campaign will be no different. Despite the turnover and cyclical nature of Major Junior Hockey our organization expects to make the playoffs every year.

Thanks in part to the quality scouting and coaching we have made the playoffs all 16 years we have been in Cranbrook, while finishing with a .500 or better record for a WHL record 15 consecutive seasons (both are the longest active streaks in the WHL).

Our organization has been very fortunate since moving to Cranbrook to enjoy an unparalleled amount of on ice success. With the core group of our players in the 19 and 20-year-old age groups, we expect them along with our new prospects to once again battle for contention in the very competitive Eastern Conference.

Our fans have come to expect a team that is hard working on the ice and ambassadors for Cranbrook and the entire East Kootenay region off the ice.

On behalf of the entire organization, welcome back and I hope you enjoy the game.

Jeff Chynoweth, President & Governor

TONIGHT’S OPPONENTLAST OUTING: The Wheat Kings and ICE meet for the second time in as many nights at Western Financial Place, with Brandon having recorded a 5-3 win last night. The Wheat Kings overcame a 3-1 third period deficit to stun Kootenay thanks in part to a three-point effort from Tim McGauley. Kootenay jumped out to a 1-0 lead just shy of the eight-minute mark thanks to Tim Bozon, who tallied his 21st goal of the season to give the home side the advantage. Luke Philp added to the ICE lead four minutes later, pouncing on a loose puck in the Wheat Kings slot before wristing it past goaltender Jordan Papirny. Braylon Shmyr brought the visitors back to within a goal before a late first-period marker from Levi Cable put Kootenay up 3-1 at the intermission. After a scoreless second period, Brandon’s offense came to life. Quintin Lisoway again halved the Wheat King deficit 4:15 into period three. The Wheat Kings then scored twice in a 15-second span beginning with a rebound goal from Eric Roy at 7:33 of the third frame. McGauley deflected home a point shot moments later to give Brandon a 4-3 lead. McGauley then rounded out the scoring with an empty-net tally in the dying seconds. Papirny made 23 saves to record the win for the Wheat Kings, while Kootenay’s Hoflin turned aside 28 shots.
