2015-2016 Committees

After all, we live in one of the best cities in the country and who wouldn’t want to

come to Denver?

We appointed Fred Easton and Richard Pittenridge to be Co‐Chairs of the committee.

Both are extremely motivated, capable and well connected within the IRWA. We also

have  two  past  International  IRWA  Presidents  as  well  as  several  other  leaders  in  our

chapters who have done this before. I think we have a pretty good shot!

Fred and Richard will be looking to add members to this committee to help. If you are

interested please contact one of them at feaston@f‐w.com  or [email protected]. We

also  welcome  anyone  who  wants  to  help  in  an  informal  fashion.  No  commitment

necessary.  If  you  just want  to  share an  idea or help out with whatever, please don’t

hesitate to contact one of them.  And while we are on the topic, don’t forget to book

your room in Nashville so you can be sure to land a spot in the host hotel. It’s never too

early to do that if you plan to attend.

Another function of this committee is to plan and organize more events on behalf of the

chapter. The main focus is to have more social gatherings that allow our members to get

to know each other, network and have some  fun. We will be holding another events

planning meeting very soon, we hope to see you there. I want to stress that there is no

commitment to attend these planning meetings, our main goal is to get people out and

involved at multiple levels. Even if you just want to show up and listen, you are welcome.

Please come and help us plan some fun events for the coming year.

We are also approaching our chapter elections coming up in April. I am again calling on

volunteers that are looking for a challenge and willing to step up and take that next step

to become a leader in this chapter. If you have any interest, I would encourage you to

attend a board meeting so you can get a taste of how the board and committees operate.

I can tell you first hand that  is has been an awesome experience and very rewarding.

Please contact me if you are interested.

Don’t forget this month’s meeting is a lunch meeting.

It’s February 9th at 11:30 at Park Hill Golf Club.

The Board will meet before the lunch at 10:30.

Also, please don’t forget to renew your 2016 IRWA memberships. This is very

important if we want to get more of those awesome incentive prizes to give away

next year.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

How  many  of  you  would  like  to  have  the  amazing

experience  of  attending  the  annual  International

Education Conference  right  in our own backyard?  I  am

definitely one of those people and so are several other

members  of  our  chapter  leadership who  have  decided

that we should make a bid for the conference to come

back to Denver!

We  officially  formed  the  Chapter  6  Events  Planning

Committee at our last board meeting. The committee will

be responsible for organizing and planning a bid to bring

the conference to Denver in either 2021 or 2022.

News from the Professional Development Committee

IRWA Updates and Expands SR/WA Program

By the time this newsletter is in your hands you will probably be aware that the IRWA's

premier certification program for the SR/WA is growing and improving. After several

years in the works and through countless hours of dedication by numerous committees,

task forces, association leaders, staff members and dedicated volunteers, this new

program was officially unveiled to IRWA leadership and Chapter Professional

Development Chairs on January 7, 2016. It was followed by announcement to the

general membership on January 14, 2016. This new program was created in response

to the industries that drive the education and membership of the IRWA. The new

certifications are expected to further increase the respect and professionalism

associated with the SR/WA certification.

The new program will consist of 4 different pathways to an SR/WA certification. There

will be 3 industry certifications along with the generalist certification as follows:

SR/WA-EU - Individuals specializing primarily in the electric and utility industry

SR/WA-OG - Individuals specializing primarily in the oil and gas industry

SR/WA-TN - Individuals specializing primarily in the transportation industry

SR/WA-GN - Individuals that practice as a generalist not wishing to specialize in a specific

industry

This new program expands the existing SR/WA program. If you currently hold an SR/WA

you will automatically become an SR/WA–GN under the new program. The existing

specialty certification programs such as RW-NAC, RW-AC, RW-URAC, etc. are not

affected by this new program and will remain as they are for the foreseeable future.

Please look for the details of this new program on IRWA's website or in an email that

was sent to all members on January 15, 2016. At this time the web site should be

updated with the new program information. Headquarters staff has done an excellent

job presenting the new program on the website.

As with any new program, I can assure you that there will be questions that need to be

answered, rules that may need to be interpreted, and changes that may need to be

adopted. I look forward feedback from everyone about the program.

Washington Street ‐ Before

Washington Street ‐ After

Adams County celebrated the successful completion

of its fourth and final phase of the Washington Street

Corridor  Improvement  Project.  This  4‐mile  street

improvement project  provided a 76‐  to 84‐foot‐wide

pavement  section  from  52nd  Avenue  to  83rd  Avenue,

improved  multi‐modal  safety,  eliminated  roadway

flooding and brought economic vitality to a mixed‐use

industrial,  commercial  and  residential  area  of  the

county.

In  2000,  Washington  Street  was  a  major  arterial roadway  requiring  a  need  of  an  upgrade.  Adams County  and  its  design  engineers  set  their  sights  on creating  a  100‐foot‐wide  roadway  section  that included six lanes with a left‐hand turn lane, pedestrian facilities  (radius  returns  with  handicap  ramps  and monolithic  vertical  curb,  gutter,  and  walks),  and  the installation of a storm sewer system with street inlets and manholes.

The roadway section is home to nearly 150 businesses, 10  rural  residential  parcels  and  10  single  family residential  subdivisions.  Design  services  for  Phase  I began in 2001 and ended with the final construction of Phase  IV  in  July  2015.  The  overall  cost  of  all  fours phases  of  this  capital  improvement  project  was  $17 million.

Right‐of‐way  and  relocation  efforts  were  involved  in

every phase of the Washington Street project. Adams

FEATURED PROJECT Major Adams County Corridor Rehabilitated

County, with the assistance of its relocation and property management specialists, acquired over 50 parcels for road right‐

of‐way, 30 tracts of land for permanent easements of various types and one residential relocation. The county was pleased

with the right‐of‐way specialist team for keeping the combined cost of right‐of‐way acquisition to under $1.6 million.

Adams County would  like  to  thank all  those  involved  in all  four phases of  the Washington Street Corridor Project. The

professionalism and expertise of each team assisted in protecting the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Adams
