Several years ago, the City of Northlakeinstalled LED lighting on one block ofArmitage Avenue as a test and

demonstration project.Last year, all of the City’s lighting systems

in the parks and along Midland Trail wereconverted to LED lighting. The City’sexperience, along with other municipalities’experiences with LED street lighting has beenextremely positive and the decision was madeto expand the program to the rest of thestreet light systems operated by the City ofNorthlake.

Northlake has two street lighting systems –one is operated and maintained by ComEd.These lights are the ones on the woodenpoles. The City owned and maintained lightsare the ones on the metal poles.

New LED lights will be installed onFullerton Avenue east of Wolf Road, the rest

of Armitage Avenue and South Roy Avenue. The approximate cost for this work is$66,000. However, the City has obtainedgrant funding in the amount of $35,000 todefray the cost of the work. The balance ofthe funding will be made up to the City withreduced energy and maintenance costs goingforward. LED bulbs are designed to operatefor approximately 12 years and consume lessenergy than the sodium vapor bulbs they arereplacing. The City’s goal is to convert allCity owned street lighting to LED. ComEdhas made no announcement as to whetherthey will be converting their lighting systemto LED.

In any event, the City will be saving moneyon energy costs and maintenance goingforward and less energy being consumed willbenefit the environment and reliable, durablelighting will enhance public safety as well.
