February 2015

Every year, I am shocked by the arrival of Lent. I am impressed with the feeling of January, a month of bitter cold that makes the world seem a bit slower than it really is. Time is more insulated when bound by moments of shoveling snow and scraping car windows. January is a moment to take a breath and slow down to enjoy the beauty of the night. And so every year as January and the beginning of February lull me into a sense of slowing down, Ash Wednesday arrives on the calendar and forces me to remember that time moves forward.

Regardless of the temperature outside, Lent is on its way. Ash Wednesday comes in the middle of this month to remind us of our fragility and mortality as well as to get us moving toward the cross and the Resurrection. This year, as we journey towards Easter, we will do so as Rebels, as those opposing the world at large. We will focus on the book, Renegade Gospel: the Rebel Jesus and the Radical Road to the Cross, by Rev. Mike Slaughter. He writes “Jesus didn’t come to start a religion. The rebel Jesus came with a renegade gospel to start a revolution.”

We will study how Christ was a true revolutionary,

turning the world on its head! Join us in Wesley Life Groups, and in worship on Wednesdays and Sundays. We are excited to continue on this journey with Christ toward the world changing event of the Cross and especially, the Resurrection.

We hope that you continue in your prayers at 7:12 a.m or 7:12 p.m. Please pray that God’s Spirit breaks through our barriers so that we may continue to do God’s will in the Heart of Sioux Falls.

Celebrate! We have so much here at First

UMC to celebrate in our Kids Ministry! 2014 was awesome and we are off to a marvelous start in 2015. We have begun our last semester of our 3 year Sunday School curriculum where we have studied the bible stories from Genesis – Revelation. We are already planning Vacation Bible School for this summer, so mark your calendars for June 8-12. We are going to need lots of help to make this a week to remember for our kids and the surrounding

neighborhood. Perhaps the most

exciting thing we are looking forward to is the arrival of our Prescriptions Coach, RaNae Street. With RaNae’s guidance we will learn and implement practices to best connect with, engage, and assimilate and disciple new families with kids and teens. RaNae Street, nationally recognized children and family ministries specialist, will be with us the end of February to

begin this adventure.I encourage anyone who would

like to be a part of the new “Kids Ministry” to give me a call. Together we will discern how best to put your skills and passion to work in leading our Kids to a life with Jesus.

Lights! Camera! Ego! Well, that is, if you’re a contestant on one of the many “Reality TV” shows filling the airwaves today. Entertaining? Maybe. Harmless? Hardly. The American Ideal shines the spotlight on 4

contestants who are competing to be the next “American Ideal.” Tonight’s theme is “Gospel Music Night.” During the production of this live TV show, contestants Willa Wynn, Anita Ward, and Neil Down discover, with the

help of fellow contestant Emma Tate, the truth about themselves as “Reality TV” takes on a whole new meaning. This humorous, tongue-in-cheek look at fame, fortune and flim-flam turns popular culture on its head and

shines the spotlight of God’s truth about humility on the heart of contestants and audience alike.

This last year was an incredible year in the Middle School Youth program. As I look forward to what 2015 has in store, I am reminded of what Jesus says “ Don’t worry about anything, but bring everything to me in prayer.” This is a great reminder of how Christ has everything under control, and for me that is exciting. It brings me peace as I enter into 2015 with the youth. I know that great and exciting things will happen this year in the Middle School Youth program. The year started out with the youth going and helping clean out the basement at Compassion Daycare. Compassion Daycare is located in the same building that the Summit House was located. This was a great time for me to see how this ministry has transformed the building. Not only have the youth been doing outreach but they have been participating in panel discussions. We invited several people to come and talk with the youth about faith. This was a way for us to help bridge the gap between generations and helped the youth to learn more about what the church has to offer. The month of February, we are wrapping up our panel discussion series by bringing in a speaker from KidStop

and Big Brother/big Sister. We will also start a new series on God Story. This series will talk about the Ten Commandments and the story of Meshach, Shadrach and Abednego. I am looking forward to this series. Thank you for all your prayers and support.

“REEL FAITH” February Valentine

SpecialSunday Evening, February 8th,

6:30 p.m. in the Friendship RoomSpECIAL FEATuRE: “ELSA And FREd”

The feature for February is a romantic comedy between two elderly people whose paths cross

unexpectedly when the mild mannered, recently widowed Fred (Christopher Plummer) downsizes

and moves into an apartment next door to the unpredictable, high spirited Elsa (Shirley MacLaine). This is a delightful movie that in a light hearted way

reminds us of the reversal in parenting roles and that love is always possible, even later in life. Fred is a good man whose wife has died and whose well

intended daughter commandeers his life. Elsa bursts in like a whirlwind,

determined to teach him that the time he has left to live, be it

more or less, is precious and that he should enjoy it as he pleases.

Bring your favorite movie treat to share and join us for a

delightful evening.

Care First TeamAs we continue to grow as a welcoming and caring congregation, we are seeking people to help the Pas-toral Care staff keep connected with the many needs and concerns of our members. We are developing CareFirst Teams for each worship service time, who will serve as the “eyes and ears” for that service and be another layer of caring by: • watching for people who haven’t been in church for a few Sundays• seeking out visitors and guests to welcome them to the service• making the Pastoral Care staff aware of joys and concerns that come up during conversations • making phone calls or sending cards as needed and appropriate

1 John 3:18-19 tells us “Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. Our actions will show that we belong to the truth, so we will be confident when we stand before God.” (NLT) During your breakthrough prayer time over the next few weeks, please ask God for guidance as you consid-er taking a larger role in showing God’s love to others by serving in this important ministry. February Mission of the Month: Call To FreedomFORCE, FRAUD, and COERCION - HUMAN TRAFFICKINGCall to Freedom (formerly– Be Free Ministries) agency is located in downtown Sioux Falls. They are working with victims, educating the public, and attempting to stop human trafficking in South Dakota. Human Trafficking is considered one of the fastest growing criminal industries in the world. Executive Director, Rev. Kimberly

Kaveny La Plante PHD will give a brief overview at all 3 worship services on February 8th. They have volunteer opportunity needs including mailings, website development, computer assistance, and stocking the

closet. The agency could also use donations beyond money, a few of the personal items they have in the closet for victims:

• Large Bottles of Shampoo and Conditioner (no trial size)

• Lotion• Body Wash• Personal Hygiene products

(Tampons and napkins)• Diapers all sizes• Socks • Mittens/ hats• Phone Cards• Wal-Mart gift cards $10 or $20• Gas Cards

FuMC LIBRARY HAS BOOKS OF LOCAL InTEREST Our church library has a large section of books related to life in South Dakota, including both fiction and nonfiction, history, biography, and memoirs. Here are a few examples:

• Browne, Chris. The Monster Who Ate the State. An illustrated children’s book by the cartoonist who draws “Hagar the Horrible” and now lives in Sioux Falls. “The State” is the State Theater! The book tells the story of Suzy the Dinosaur and her journey across South Dakota from the Underground Research Lab in the Black Hills to Sioux Falls.• Sneve, Virginia Driving Hawk. Completing the Circle. This family memoir by a South Dakota author tells stories of her grandmother, Flora Driving Hawk, and other women of our Lakota Native American culture. We know about Crazy Horse, Black Elk, Red Cloud, and other male leaders of the local tribes, but too little attention has been paid to the contributions of Native women. Sneve’s account helps to “complete the circle” of her culture.

• Hunhoff, Bernie. South Dakota Curiosities. You’ve seen our Dakota quartzite penitentiary, but do you know the story of the 1922 prison break that gained four inmates ten days of freedom before coming to a violent end? Who built the Japanese Gardens here, and why? Have you met our local outhouse interpreter, Bob Kolbe? Hunhoff ’s book is filled with fascinating information about the city and state you thought you knew.

• O’Brien, Dan. The Contract Surgeon. His name was Dr. Valentine McGillicuddy, and this novel by a South Dakota writer tells the story of his unlikely friendship with Sioux leader Crazy Horse in the years just after the Civil War. O’Brien’s story takes place in just one day, the last day of Crazy Horse’s life.

Stock the Shelves update: Are you hosting a Superbowl Party in a few weeks? If so, here’s a “Souperbowl Challenge” for you. Why not ask the people you are inviting to bring 5 cans of soup with them and donate them to our Stock the Shelves collection for the Food Pantry? At the same time we are enjoying an abundance of game-day snacks with friends, there are many in our community who will be hungry. Let’s make a SOUPER showing of support for the food insecure in our community!! Donations can be brought to the office.

uMCOR Layette Kit ItemsIt is hard to imagine, but there are families in this country and across the world that do not have the

bare necessities for their infants. This is where UMCOR comes in to help meet that need. To

partner with UMCOR, we are collecting the items for the Layette Kits. Here are the items we need for the Layette Kits: Baby Sweaters open in the front or hooded sweatshirts that have zippers, diaper pins, onsies, gowns or sleepers, and receiving

blankets that are 32 x 32 inches. Thanks to some of our loyal seamstresses, we have quite a supply of receiving blankets, but could use some more. We

buy the diapers in bulk to complete the kits. These items can be dropped off in the office. If you have any

questions about the UMCOR Kits, please contact Mary Jane Richardson at mary-

[email protected] or check out the UMCOR website at

www.umcor.org.

Argus Leader reports on First united Methodist Church:“dudley House gets donation from downtown church A downtown Sioux Falls church surprised itself with its congregation’s enthusiasm for a new ecumenical ministry for the homeless. First United Methodist Church directed its Christmas Eve offering to the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House, which opened earlier this week, in a change from past procedure. Generally, the church has used its holiday offering in-house, said se-nior pastor the Rev. Bob Ruedebusch. Last fall, the church council and finance committee agreed with his proposal to donate it to the new homeless shelter. “Our mission now is to be a sanctuary of Christian hope, love and encouragement in the heart of Sioux Falls,” Ruede-busch said. “(The Bishop Dudley Hospitality House) was a natural since it was a new project, and we wanted to participate in the ecu-menical relationship.” The homeless shelter is housed in an old ware-house purchased by the Sioux Falls Catholic Diocese for $750,000, and it carries the name of the late Roman Catholic Bishop Paul Dudley, but raising the more than $4 million needed to serve Sioux Falls’ poor-est and most vulnerable residents was an ecumenical effort. More than 1,000 donors provided dollars, in-kind services and other goods, including at least 38 churches affiliated with various denominations throughout the area, said Jerry Klein, the Catholic diocese’s delegate for communications and social ministries. First United Methodist of-ficials made the presentation to BDHH director Chad Campbell this morning, giving him a check for $31,190.54. That topped the hoped-for goal by more than $10,000, Ruedebusch said. “Christmas is a time of giving,” he said, explaining the generosity. “And this was a natural project coming out of our vision as a congregation. We’re in the heart of Sioux Falls, and that’s a legacy of being downtown for almost 140 years. We wanted to care for the people in our neighborhood.” Re-sponse from the city’s religious core has been overwhelming, Camp-bell said. “Churches and various congregations have just embraced the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House, not only with financial contri-butions, but allowing me to speak to groups and meeting individual pastors,” Campbell said. “They have been welcoming this project in such a way I can’t even express.” After receiving the check, Campbell addressed the First United Methodist group S.A.G.E.S., which meets monthly.”Jill Callison, Argus Leader

Ash WednesdayFor the last millennia and maybe longer, Christians have gathered on the first day of Lent to worship and to remember our sinfulness and mortality. It is a day on which we gather and place ashes on our foreheads. The ashes symbolize the fragileness of our lives and the sins we commit as humanity. We gather to put these ashes and to start the season of Lent, a time of fasting and preparation for Holy Week and Easter. There is a song we sing in our praise service called Beautiful Things that talks of the amazing beauty that God does with weak and sinful humanity, with fragile and broken us. The lyrics say “All this pain, I wonder if I’ll ever find my way, I wonder if my life could really change at all. - All this earth, Could all that is lost ever be found, Could a garden come up from this ground at all - You make beautiful things, You make beautiful things out of the dust, You make beautiful things, You make beautiful things out of us - All around, Hope is springing up from this old ground, Out of chaos life is being found in You - You make me new, - You make beautiful things, You make beautiful things out of the dust, You make beautiful things, You make beautiful things out of us -”

God makes beautiful things out of us. God makes beautiful things out of dust.
