February 22, First Sunday of Lent Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

The gospel starkly presented entry of Jesus into the “wilderness”, otherwise described by Mat-thew and Luke as a “desert.” Jesus is tested by Satan before He begins His mission. What Jesus proclaims, as this gospel segment ends, gives us a framework for what Jesus will later say and do throughout the rest of the story.

All of these sets up the question for our reflection, namely, have you ever felt tested by God? I daresay most of us will offer an unqualified “yes” to that. It’s a consistent pattern in most lives of faith, as witnessed best of all by the saints of our Church. You and I may not have to endure the multiple troubles of Job, but we all have our moments of misery before mercy, and our conse-quent doubts about God’s personal love for us. We hear that pain in the many voices around us from people all the time. “My child died in a school shooting and you have the nerve to ask me to trust God?” Or, “my spouse died of cancer despite my prayers, and I just cannot forgive God for taking her so young.” Or, “my cousin was abused by a priest, so I don’t go to Mass anymore.” The list could go on.

St. Mark, acting as God’s messenger today asks us to note by way of Jesus’ experience of test-ing before He began His mission, He of Holiness and Truth personified, that God allows even His lesser friends like us to be tested. From these tests we learn just how genuine our Faith is, and how deep our love for God is. None of us should be caught off guard by the twists and turns of life here on earth, which the saints tell us, after all, is a testing ground. Those tests prepare us for our unique mission, which the priest will spell out for us at the end of Mass whenever he says: “Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.” Thanks to our source: http//www.jpp.net/reflections.

El evangelio crudamente presenta la entrada de Jesús en el "desierto". Jesús es puesto a prue-ba por Satanás antes de comenzar su misión. Lo que proclama a Jesús, al termina este seg-mento del evangelio, nos da un marco de lo que Jesús después dirá y hará a través del resto de la historia.

Todo esto nos lleva a la pregunta para nuestra reflexión, ¿ha sentido alguna vez que Dios la ha puesto a prueba? Me atrevería a decir que la mayoría de nosotros va a responder con un rotun-do "sí" a eso. Es un patrón constante en la mayoría de los que vivimos con fe, mejor demostra-do por los santos de nuestra Iglesia. Usted y yo no tuvimos que soportar los múltiples proble-mas de Job, pero todos tenemos nuestros momentos de miseria antes de la misericordia, y nuestras consiguientes dudas sobre el amor personal de Dios para nosotros. Escuchamos del dolor ajeno en las muchas voces de gente que nos rodean todo el tiempo. "Mi hijo murió en un tiroteo en la escuela y ¿usted tiene el descaro de pedirme que confíe en Dios?" O, "mi esposa murió de cáncer a pesar de mis oraciones, y yo simplemente no puedo perdonar a Dios por habérsela llevado tan joven." O, "mi primo fue abusado por un sacerdote, así que ya no voy a la Misa. "La lista podría seguir y seguir.

L E N T E N T A L K S Mr. John De Lisa, a parishioner at Our Lady of Good Coun-

sel, will lead a study group for 5 weeks during Lent. These

sessions will take place Monday evenings from 7:00 – 8:30

PM in the St. Monica’s Room of the Our Lady of Good Coun-

sel parish offices starting February 23. Mr. De Lisa will dis-

cuss the meaning and practice of Lent in the Catholic tradi-

tion.

Mr. De Lisa is a teacher at St. Joseph Hill Academy and has

an MA in Theology from CUA. John lived the monastic life

with Cistercian monks for 20 years.

curso, donde estudiaremos la primera parte del Apocalipsis capitu-

rroquial. Las charlas estarán a cargo de dos hermanos de la igle-
