FROM THE PASTORFROM THE PASTORFROM THE PASTORFROM THE PASTOR

Each one must give as they have decided in their heart,

not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a

cheerful giver. – 2 Corinthians 9:7

Following the Light, Getting Wet

In a lecture I was at, Mark Allen Powell, a professor at

Trinity Lutheran Seminary, told a story about

stewardship:

The Gauls were a warlike people who, in ancient

times, lived around what would become France and

Belgium. Christian missionaries went to this area and

converted many

Gauls to Christianity.

When a converted

warrior was baptized

in a river or stream,

he would hold his

dominant arm up in

the air when the

missionary dunked

them under. This was

unusual. And then the

missionaries found

out why: when the

next battle broke out, the Gaul could say, “This arm

isn’t baptized” and could feel free to grab up his sword

and fight and destroy his enemy in a most unchristian

way.

Mark Allen Powell then said that Christians are like

that, only today, we hold our wallets and checkbooks

outside of the water and believe that our money is

outside the realm of our baptism and Christian life.

We see money as a separate issue. Money is only my

own business and not God’s. But Powell said that

Christians need to get that arm under the water as

well.

Stewardship is not just about raising funds for a

specific cause, it’s about our spiritual growth, our trust

in God, our sacrifices. When we give to a church, or

another charitable organization, or anything that can’t

give something back to us, we are using our spiritual

muscles and trusting that there will be enough.

“Stewardship”, Mark Allen Powell said, “is about

getting completely wet.”

In the season of Epiphany, we are focusing on

stewardship and “Following the Light”. As we review

our job descriptions for being a Christian, we

remember that one of the things we’re called to do is

to be a “cheerful giver” and share what we have, not

just for the benefit of the church and the world, but

for our own, spiritual benefit as well.

When you are filling out your pledge card this month,

of course, consider Gethsemane’s need. But also

consider your spiritual need. Have you been giving at

the same level for a while? Try giving a little more. If

you haven’t given regularly, consider regular giving as

a spiritual discipline.

Remember, our money is a big part of our lives and

our identities, let’s not be afraid to get it wet!

SYNCHRONICITYSYNCHRONICITYSYNCHRONICITYSYNCHRONICITY

“Player’s Choice” with Synchronicity

Synchronicity Trio

Dick Reuning - violin, Sharon Walton - piano, Denise Spires - clarinet, Bruce Posey - cello

Save the date! At 4:00 pm on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2016, Synchronicity Trio and guest artist Denise Spires will present

classical and light classical music in another Benefit Concert for Faith Mission Homeless Shelters. The program

titled PLAYER'S CHOICE, Synchronicity's Personal Favorites will include Beethoven, Brahms, Piazzolla, Sowash and

others.

Last year this event raised over $6500 from free will donations. Can we match that or do even better? The need is

greater than ever. Matching funds are available from an anonymous donor.

There will be a flyer in the Sunday bulletin. Please share it and invite your neighbors and friends for a pleasant

Sunday afternoon while supporting a good cause that provides many services to our neighbors in need who

besides food and shelter use medical, dental and vision care plus veteran services. The Faith Mission Resource

Centers offer clients assistance in finding employment, learning computer skills and resumé writing.

Enjoy fellowship at the reception afterward in the Great Hall donated in part by Mozart’s Bakery and Café, 4784 N

High St.

P.S. Gethsemane’s next time to serve a meal at Faith Mission is April 14. Sign up at the Welcome Center in the

Narthex to serve or to send a dessert.

P.P.S. The Faith Mission website has a 50th Anniversary slide show at http://faithmissionofohio.org/celebrating-

50-years-of-serving/. In the Year 1998 there are two slides of GLC member, former Faith Mission director Nancy

Feole. In year 2000 you will see Dick Reuning with former director Nelson Meyer. Nancy and Dick were both long

time board members of the Mission as were Howard Feole, John Jacob, Roy Hilsabeck and Pastor Jerry Miller.

Generations In Faith Together: “Communion”

led by Julia Wiebe, Children’s Ministry Assistant

In this G.I.F.T. Class in the Great Hall, we will learn

together about the sacrament of Holy Communion

through fellowship and conversation. We will also

make our own communion bread. This is a wonderful

opportunity to learn with and from our sisters and

brothers in Christ of all ages!

“Don’t Sing Songs to a Heavy Heart”

Joanne Foster

These words, inspired by Proverbs 25:20, are used for

the title of a book which was written by Rev. Kenneth

C. Haugk, Ph.D, a pastor and clinical psychologist.

Our guest speaker is Joanne Foster, gerontologist who

has served at various churches as a Senior Adult

Minister. Joanne will draw from Haugk’s book and

other sources to help us understand ways that we can

care for each other as we face life’s difficulties and

griefs. We often feel uncomfortable talking to friends

who are suffering…we don’t know how to respond to

their grief. Our discussion in the Multi-Purpose Room

will help us to have words and insights which may give

us more ability to care for those around us.

Feb. 26, 2017

Faith Mission Sunday

Terri Rowe

Terri Rowe, Development Director, will give an

overview of Faith Mission’s expanded facilities on

Grant Ave. Come see how the facilities make it

possible to help more of our neighbors in need with

many services in addition to food and shelter: medical,

dental and vision care plus veteran services. The Faith

Mission Resource Centers offer clients assistance in

finding employment, learning computer skills and

resumé writing. Lifetime Learning meets in the Multi-

Purpose Room. Be sure to take a look at the Faith

Mission display in the Narthex and come to the

Synchronicity concert in the afternoon at 4:00 pm to

raise money to support the many helpful services of

Faith Mission.

FOR THOSE IN NEEDFOR THOSE IN NEEDFOR THOSE IN NEEDFOR THOSE IN NEED

Health Ministry Team Recruits

Caring Contacts

Caring Contacts is a ministry of Gethsemane's

Health Ministry Team. Once a year we

"recruit" persons

who desire to

commit to one year

"caring" for one of

our ill or

homebound

members. At the

end of that year you

have the option of

stepping down or

continuing the relationship.

Activities a "caregiver" might consider doing with their

client include, but are not limited to, a monthly visit,

ride to a doctor appointment, ride to church, home

communion, lunch out, a phone call, send a card for

special events.

The relationship with the homebound person often

results in a close friendship. So both people win!

Health Ministry Team will be recruiting in the narthex

two Sundays in January. Try not to confuse us with the

young people selling subs!

And speaking of young people, being a care-giver isn't

limited to older, retired people. We would love to

have teens and young adults participate in this

ministry.

So whatever your age, please consider making "Caring

Contacts" a part of your New Year plans.

Please sign up during our recruitment Sundays or

contact Emilie Hagerdorn at 614-882-0172 or

[email protected].

Sunday School Collects Socks

The elementary Sunday School class is collecting new

and gently used socks for First English Lutheran

Church in downtown Columbus. All sizes, colors, kinds

are needed as long as there are no holes and they are

only gently worn. Please place your socks in the

marked (with lots of glitter) box in the

narthex. Collection will take place now up until Lent

begins, Feb. 26! Thanks in advance!!!

Super Bowl Sunday Is Time to

Donate to the “Souper” Bowl

February 5 is “Souper” Bowl Sunday! More food will

be consumed in the U.S. on that day than on any other

day of the year (including

Thanksgiving and

Christmas). However, many

families right here in our

community struggle with

hunger every day. That’s

why LSS Food Pantries are

here to help, and we need

YOU to make Super Bowl

Sunday souper! When you

donate, you help us provide

more than 2 million meals a

year. 40% of which are eaten by children and 30% are

eaten by seniors. Each dollar given will provide two

meals to a hungry family!

Fill Gethsemane’s grocery cart with food and our soup

pot with cash. The cash allows the pantry to purchase

food from the Mid-Ohio Food Bank at a greatly

reduced cost. Make your checks payable to

Gethsemane Lutheran Church and write “Food Pantry”

in the memo.

PLAY & LEARNPLAY & LEARNPLAY & LEARNPLAY & LEARN

Greetings from Play & Learn!

February is considered by many to be the month of love. In John 13:35 Jesus says, “By this all men will

know that you are My disciples, if you love one another." Play & Learn will be celebrating and sharing

the love this month through class Valentine’s Day parties and card exchanges as well as hosting Parent

Appreciation Week. Then at the end of the month, Play & Learn will have its annual Pasta Fundraising

Dinner and invite our friends from Gethsemane and Play & Learn past and present to join us.

A popular song lyric reads: What the world needs now is love, sweet love

It's the only thing that there's just too little of

What the world needs now is love, sweet love

No not just for some but for everyone

Well, we can definitely say that there is no shortage of love in this place! The love and support the

members of Gethsemane show the staff and families of Play & Learn throughout the year are evident

and very much appreciated. Your latest token of love was shown through the Tree of Needs. The Play &

Learn staff is very grateful for your thoughtfulness and the time and care you took in selecting and

purchasing the wonderful gifts for the classrooms. The children are really enjoying them, and from the

bottom of our hearts, we thank you!

Play & Learn Christian Child Care invites you to attend its annual

pasta fundraising dinner on Friday, February 24, in the Great Hall

from 5:00 – 7:00 pm with a special presentation by Mr. Puppet at

6:00 pm. Dine-in and carry-out dinners will be available. Pre-sale

tickets will be available on Sunday, February 12 and Sunday,

February 19 for $7 per adult and $4 per child. Additional

donations are welcome. Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used

to update classroom equipment and furnishings.
