UPCOMING EVENTSNBTC Tennis events are heating up, headlined by our 2014 Babolat Challenge Cup Mixer Series! Heather Schriber and Steve Joyce ran the January 4th event to overwhelming success and are gearing up for the Su-per Bowl Mixer! Based on feedback from the member-ship, we decided to switch up the formats for the 2014 season. The Babolat Challenge Series will be “mixed doubles” and “stay with partner”. However, if you need to change partners for different events, that is your choice. Points are cummulative so Good Luck to all members! For those new members, the Babolat Mixer

Series comprises 3 mixers with the dates of January 4th, February 2nd and March 22nd. At the culmination of March’s event, the Babolat Male and fe-male champ will be crowned, and will be awarded Babolat

Gear and have their name engraved on our perpetual Trophy. The beauty of the Babolat Challenge Cup is that ANY level player has the opportunity to become the season Champion. Please view the standings on this page. We have 16 players after our first event that are currently in the pole position. The player(s)/teams with the most points (1500 max season points) will be crowned Babolat Challenge Cup Champion. In the event of a tie (and there very well could be one) we will add up the total games won to determine the winner(s). Our previous 2013 Babolat Cup Champs were Matt Tsou (rated 4.0), and Juliette Ugartechea (rated 4.0), and Mike Graham (rated 4.5) with Mary Ann Strout (rated 3.5, now 4.0) in the Spring 2013 season. After the 2014 winter/spring series, a NEW mixer series starts up on July 4th with another three exciting mixer events for summertime/fall competition Charging ahead into the 2014 tennis season, NBTC offers many more events to satiate your tennis cravings! We invite you to spend Valentine weekend with us. On Friday February 14th, avoid the crowds and bring your sweetheart for Valentine’s Dinner starting at 5:30pm. The next day on February 15th, NBTC hosts the VASSS Wooden Raquet Tournament followed by Karaoke entertainment by DJ Tice. The matches will begin promptly at 11am and the tourna-ment format is open to pairs of men and women in any combination. If you don’t have a Wood racquet, the club will supply a limited number for you to use. This is a handicapped tournament, so any level mem-ber and combination is encouraged to play! SAVE THE DATES: NBTC Singles Club Championships is March 1-2 As always, to sign up for any event, contact Heather Schriber by emailing her at [email protected].

Any kind of pain, whether it forms as a pesky headache, an aching back, tennis elbow, rotator cuff tear, or chronic sharp-needle-pain in the foot such as with peripheral neuropathy, ALWAYS has a source (reason) and cause (specific injury) behind it! Identify the source…correct the cause…and the body will heal with ease! Many NBTC members are constantly surprised how quickly debilitating pain can be re-versed. How can a knee that is bone on bone become pain free without joint replacement surgery? How is this possible? The difference is Corrective Therapy (CT)!

What is CT? CT is a whole new therapy model for healing pain syndromes. It was created on the heels of my own neck & spinal injury that ended my professional football career in 1984. Due to the severe challenges I faced with pain and a questionable future, I dedicated my life to looking beyond the superficial approaches of “managing” pain and into the actual healing pro-cesses that the body is capable of. CT is neither massage nor physical therapy. It is not chiropractic or anything like all other therapies. While massage, physical therapy, acupuncture, medicine, surgery, etc., can help relieve symptoms of pain, CT

addresses the real reasons behind pain AND corrects the actual causes (injury and weakness creating the pain) to help the body heal fast and with ease! CT helps the body heal! Corrective Therapy helps you understand why you have pain, the real causes creating pain and, what corrective steps are required to get your health, energy and strength back so you can live a pain free life! Mike Graham out 5 monthsWe wish Mike Graham a speedy recov-ery as he is temporarily out with an elbow injury. Good luck Mikey, we’ll miss ya. Don’t be drinking too many Foster’s while you’re out :)

Farewell Jennifer Fay... Good Luck! Long time member Jen Fay has of-ficially retired from the club. Jennifer married and moved away from the local area. An adventure seeker, Jen was always active at the club, partici-pating in most events. We wish you all the best in your next adventures.

Kate Casey SightingNBTC member and “The Queen of Kararoke” was recently seen at the club after a more than 2 year hiatus. Word has it, she might make her triumphant Karaoke return on February 15th. We hope to see Kate busting her Karaeoke rhymes, but only time will tell if she does come back. We certainly hope so! :)

SPRING LAMB DINNER: JAN. 15

Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, Murray. They call them the “Big Four”. It’s pretty easy to determine why they have been given this moniker over the past nine years. They have dominated men’s professional tennis. They have won 34 of the last 36 Grand Slams ( exception Del Potro 2009 US Open and Wawrinka Australian 2014) since 2005! This is an incredible statistic. Have you ever asked yourself why this is so? Surely it has to be something. Perhaps it’s just simple

confidence? Or mental toughness? Or maybe pure shot making ability? Yes, these attributes contribute to their success, but the reason I believe they are confident, mentally tough, and can hit ridiculous shots from anywhere in the court is simple... they have a better strength of eye at contact. What does that mean you ask? Well, you’ve seen the still shots of Federer hit-ting his beautiful one-handed backhand or Nadal stretching for that patented two-handed backhand. If you look at their eyes you’ll notice that they are fixated at the contact point well after the ball has left their strings. They do this better than anyone else on tour. They keep their eyes behind the ball. The slight-est peak early will cause even the best players to miss hit their shots. To me this is the difference. This is why they are equipped with such incredible shot making. They are balanced. And it starts with their focus at contact. Focusing improperly causes errors and a loss of balance. The “Big Four” rarely make unforced errors are seen off-balance. The beautiful thing about this is the fact that this not only applies to the top of men’s or women’s professional tennis. It can apply to the recreational level player as well. This is a great tip for all of you. Implement this into your play at the club. Keep you eyes behind the ball. Guaranteed you will see the difference with your consistency, balance, and overall play (Billie Jean King’s Eye Coach is the perfect training tool that can help you retrain your eye for proper focus-come to the Eye Coach clinic Wednesday mornings at 9:00am and see for yourself!)

John was lured into show business at the age of 12 when his younger sister, Jennifer, was named the photo double and stand-in for Drew Barrymore in Stephen King’s Firestarter (1984), which was shot in his native Wilmington, North Carolina This gave him the acting bug, leading to several small acting roles over the years. In 1998 he made his directorial debut with Enchanted (1998), a film he also wrote, produced and starred in. It went on to achieve cult status on ca-ble, still airing to this day. From there, he continued

to write and direct feature films, with 11 to date. In 2013, he wrote, produced and directed Heart of the Country (2013) based upon Ward’s 2012 novel. He serves as President of Bay Ridge Films, Inc, a corporation that creates and produces theatrical feature films, speciality DVD’s, and fictional litera-ture. John’s next shoot is called Romeo and Julie and is scheduled to shoot this spring in NYC! As for tennis, John is well known for his Calcutta exploits,

always coming through in the clutch, amassing an incredible record of Cal-cutta victories. Though he has battled injuries of late, John looks forward to the upcoming tourna-ment season ahead, as he eyes our Fall Calutta for his triumphant return!

KAROKE - JAN 10TH NEXT PUB PARTY: FEB 15

We all know who they are. You hit an amazing winner cross court, or hit a nice serve out wide thinking it was a clear ace, only to have your opponents finger shoot skyward and defiantly proclaim “Out!”. You, my friend, have just been hooked. Let’s examine the 4 different types of hookers out there and the tactics to keep the playing field level!

GARETH’S CORNER: IDENTIFYING “HOOKERS”

Type Traits Tactic

CHEETAHMakes dubious calls on critical points and defends their position like a honey badger on amphet-amine. “Win at all costs” is their strategy.

Hook back with extreme prejudice! Cau-tion: You stoop down to the level of the hooker, but you win the match.

MOLEAs blind as their namesake, they call balls “out” that were inches inside the line. Usually unsure of their own calls, because they didn’t actually see where the ball landed. “I didn’t see it” will be their defense if questioned.

Question Immediately, “Are you sure?” or state, “The ball was in!” Try the Mr. Nice Guy approach first, but resort to the Iron Fist if needed.

HAWKMust have 1000/20 vision. Makes “out” calls from the opposite side of the court with no clear view of the line in question.

Ask their partner “Did you see it in?” If there is any delay, claim the point. TIP: Intimidate your opponent by bulking up in the gym

TORTOISEDoesn’t actually say “out”, but may just raise a fin-ger briefly before dawdling to their next position on court. When you call the score prior to serving, you will be surprised that the point you thought you won three points ago was called out. Turns your 40-30 into 30-40. Ouch!

No remedy. Call your score loudly before every point. That way you can argue the immediate prior point if needed. Bo-nus Tip: consider using your phone to secretly record the match

Page 9: Febuary NBTC NEWS - Established 1966 - Welcomenbtctennis.com/assets/cms/52e2e4ed698835i79899505/feb 2014.pdf · Our previous 2013 Babolat Cup Champs were Matt Tsou (rated 4.0), and

The Bryan Brothers use these techniques to great success

DOUBLES TIPS FOR THE RECEIVER!We offer two invaluable doubles tips to use in your next match here at NBTC. Let us know how they work for you!

TIP #1Dare the server to hit to your strong side by standing way over on your weak side. The most common example is to stand almost in the alley on the ad side if you have a strong inside-out forehand. The server will see what looks like a big opening up the middle, but their serve will angle toward you, and you should be able to step over and hit your favorite shot. Alternatively, the server might miss a lot of serves trying to find the tiny slot still open to make you hit a backhand.

TIP #2If the server comes in and the server’s partner is aggressive, use one of these returns: “Short and Wide” will force the server to volley or half-volley up, where your partner will often have a chance to put away a volley. While down the line is often a difficult shot, it’s also a clean winner if the server’s partner has poached or isn’t alert. Lastly, lobbing over the server’s partner is an excellent play, especially on the deuce side, where whoever retrieves the lob will probably have to hit a high backhand.

We hope these two tips help you! Stay tuned in the coming months for event more tips!

“DOUBLES” TIPS HEALTH NO PAIN...kNOW GAIN- by dr. mitch hopkins

Whether a client is a professional athlete training for the Olympics, or someone struggling with chronic or debilitating pain – the powerful principal of Pain Free Move-ment is at the core of maximizing health

and performance! Life is Movement. Yet, without Energy, there can be no Movement. Energy fuels human life, and Move-ment is its expression. One way to increase your energy in a healthy fashion is to replace those energy drinks with medium chain triglycerides. MCT’s are a energy-dense food like: butter and coconut oil or coconut milk. MCT’s have twice the energy as your typical carbohydrate like: breads or cereals or sugar drinks. We view all performance enhancement and injury or illness recovery through this lens of Movement and energy. For example, athletes often over-train certain muscles, losing flexibility and muscle group interdependence. Over-training can actually result in injury, with research finding it as the #1 cause within several disciplines! On the other hand, when in-jured, treatments like drugs often only mask the symptoms of an underlying condition, still undiagnosed and un-treated. Undiagnosed and untreated conditions can result in chronic disease or pain, with even more breakdowns in the body to follow! When you correct your injury and boost your energy this will allow the body to experience Pain Free Movement and see the Gains you have always wanted. No Pain Know Gain is a great 2014 resolution! If you would like to experience Pain Free Move-ment and see a dramatic increase in your energy, stop in and see me. I would love to help you discover how.Dr Mitch 714.335.0881

It has been a great experience once again to see all of our Grippers & Rippers in action! The winter ses-sion of the Gripper

Developmental Program (GDP) is packed with enthusiastic kids which is great to see. We are equipping all of our Grippers with the skill set that will allow them to rally. In just three weeks I can see a noticeable change with all the kids. I am also very encour-aged about the new direction of the Ripper Tennis Academy (RTA). Coaches have now been assigned to the same group of Rippers each week they attend. This allows for more consistency with teaching and the learning! I love the fact that all our Rippers have the op-purtunity to compete in singles/doubles matchplay during the week as well as on Sundays in our Jr Grand Prix. Keep up the hard work (and fun!) for the remainder of the session!
