Benchmark indices beginnew year on a flat noteThe benchmark indices startedthe New Year with a slight gain,as the Sensex rose 52.28 pointsor 0.13 per cent to close at41,306.02 on Wednesday.Financials, IT, FMCG, andpower stocks advanced.

The broader Nifty closed14.05 points or 0.12 per centhigher at 12,182.5, with 23 con-stituents ending in the green.

“Indian markets started thenew year on a positive note,without much cues on theglobal front, as marketsremained closed. Sentiments

The smaller-sized fundhouses — BarodaAsset Management

Company (AMC) and UnionAMC — which are yet to gaina significant foothold in ~27-trillion mutual fund (MF)industry, are looking toincrease their market share asbank mergers give their spon-sor banks access to a widerbranch network.

At the end of theSeptember quarter (Q2),Union AMC’s average assetsunder management (AAUM)stood at ~4,089 crore, whilethat of Baroda AMC stood at~10,676 crore.

Compared to the corre-sponding period last year,Union AMC’s AAUM wasdown 16 per cent, while theAAUM for Baroda AMC wasdown 21 per cent.

Both fund houses have lostassets over a period, eventhough the MF industry hasmanaged an overall growth of6 per cent, despite headwindsfrom regulatory changes, andthe weakness in debt andequity markets.

“The bank merger gives usaccess to a wider customerbase and more importantly amore geographically diversi-fied presence. While DenaBank is more strong in west-ern parts, Vijaya Bank has astronger presence in thesouthern parts,” said AnthonyHeredia, chief executive offi-cer of Baroda AMC.

According to those privyto the development, the merg-er is an important one for thebank, given it will help itsource a larger part of its rev-enues through fee-basedincome streams.

“The idea is to find waysto increase fee-based income

without incurring any furthersignificant costs. This iswhere the bank mergers willcome into play as they willhelp us in quickly pluggingthe gaps in the system, andleverage our network,” said anofficial of Bank of Baroda.

For the relatively small-sized Union AMC, adding toits sales team would be key toleveraging the enhanced dis-tribution network.

“The main benefit will bethat the number of bankbranches will double post-merger. We will be able toaccess much larger numberof locations. Andhra Bank isstronger in Telangana and theAndhra region, whereasCorporation Bank has a strongpresence in Karnataka,” said G Pradeepkumar, chief exec-utive officer of Union AMC.

Pradeepkumar added theAMC would need to add morepeople to its sales force to caterto this widened distributionpresence. Both fund houseswill get access to a much widercustomer base due to existingrelationships of the banks thatare being subsumed.

MF participants say thereremains a huge scope ofuntapped opportunity forgrowth, as the marketremains underserved even

with 44 players currentlyoperating. The penetration ofMFs in India stands at 11 percent of gross domestic prod-uct, which is significantly low-er than other developingeconomies such as Brazil (59per cent) and South Africa (49per cent).

According to a report bythe industry body Associationof Mutual Funds in India, theindustry has the potential toreach the ~100-trillion mark;3.7-times from the current lev-els of ~27 trillion.

“Fund houses of all sizeshave a huge opportunity infront of them, given theunder-penetration of thedomestic MF industry,” saidthe chief executive officer ofanother fund house.

The Page Industries stockhas risen by 7.5 per cent overthe last one month, outpac-ing the Sensex.

The latter has gained 1.3per cent during the sameperiod. The recent reaffirma-tion of a good credit rating(AA/A1+) by ICRA and expec-tations of higher growth ofhigh-margin winter wear inDecember quarter haveturned investor sentimentpositive towards Page.

However, these expecta-tions may be realised at leastin the December quarter, andmay lead to some correctionin the stock price.

According to an analystat a domestic broking house,“Page will continue reportingmuted volume growth in the

December quarter. Sustaineddemand pressure anddelayed winter are likely tohave hurt its volumes. Thiscould wash off the recentgains by the stock.”

Page is the Indian makerof popular premium inner-wear brand Jockey. Thehigh-margin winter wearproducts have an approxi-mate share of 20-25 per centin the company’s overallbusiness, according to esti-mates of some analysts.

The recent price hikes inselect products, taken inNovember and December, aswell as the high base in theDecember 2018 quarter,when volumes grew 12 percent, will also have a bearingon volume growth figures ofthe recently concluded quar-ter. While winter has picked

up, growing volumes maynot be easy in the challeng-ing demand environment.

In fact, higher competi-tive intensity could restrictPage’s volume growth evenbeyond the December quar-ter. According to AnandRathi’s report: “While com-petition wasn’t credible inthe past, the newer compe-tition (Van Heusen fromAditya Birla Fashion & Retail,US Polo Innerwear by ArvindFashions) is more credible,has sound brand equity andbetter distribution.” Thus,how the company navigatesthis in the coming quarterswould be crucial.

Additionally, prices of keyraw materials are still higher,even after the recent correc-tion. This may keep hurtingthe gross margin, say ana-

lysts. In the September quar-ter, while a lower base, retailschemes, and higher salesincentives by the companyhad led to volume growth ofaround 9 per cent, higher rawmaterial cost had resulted ina 145-basis-point year-on-year contraction in Ebitda(earnings before interest, tax,depreciation and amortisa-tion) margin to 19.2 per cent.

Investors should awaitthe management’s commen-tary on volume and marginfronts post December quar-ter earnings, even as Page’slong-term growth potentialappears healthy. The stock,which had halved over ayear’s period ending August2019 and has seen somerebound thereafter, is stilltrading at a rich 48 timesFY21 estimated earnings.

With a jump of 61 per cent, NarayanaHrudayalaya was the best-performinghospital stock last year.

Given the 6 per cent addition tothose gains on Wednesday, the rallyseems to have more steam left.Investors have been switching fromlarge generic pharma companies(which have been pegged back by com-pliance issues) to health care serviceproviders, in search of higher returns.

Further, completion of capitalexpenditure programme, asset lightexpansions and improving return ratioshave led to the switch. For Narayana,in addition to the strong operating per-formance over the last five quarters,there are additional triggers.

The losses at new hospitals atGurugram, Mumbai and Dharamshilaare expected to come down goingahead. This is due to higher occupan-cies, scaling up of operations andexpansion into new categories.

The three hospitals posted a ~70 crore loss at the operating profitlevel in FY19. With utilisation levelsimproving, the hospitals are expectedto turn positive at the operating profitlevel over the next two years.

The growth in its multi-specialityhospital at the Cayman Islands is anoth-er area investors are keeping an eye on.

The hospital targets NorthAmerican patients given the price dif-ference of treatment at its unit and inthe US. The hospital posted a 58 per

cent growth in operating profit led byhigher utilisation and improving mix.Analysts at Elara Capital believe thatthe addition of an oncology unit willdrive the revenues and profits of thisoverseas venture.

The Cayman subsidiary accountsfor a quarter of the consolidated oper-ating profit of the company.

Core growth is expected to continueat its Bengaluru unit where it is addingcomplex procedures and programmesto boost revenues and improve its mix.Cost control measures and higher shareof overseas patients should also help.The company is enhancing its capacityand investing in equipment to offer awider range of services at its other cen-tres across India.

Analysts at ICICI Securities believethat the company’s focus on affordablecare and asset right model will improveaverage realisations and double itsreturn ratios over the FY19-22 period.Given the sharp run up in the stock,investors can look at the same on dips.

Higher volumes, margins to fuelgrowth for city gas distributors

The Gujarat Gas stock surgedover 7 per cent and scaled itsall-time high on Wednesday.

At the same time, the stockof Indraprastha Gas (IGL) isalso close to its peak, whilethat of Mahanagar Gas (MGL)is trading at around its 22-month high.

The Street’sconfidence oncity gas distrib-utors (CGD)remains high,consideringthe firmdemand forgas, rising vol-umes, andfuture growthpotential.

All threecompanieshave receivedupgrades byforeign brokerages.

With lower natural gasprices (global prices downover 20 per cent in twomonths), their profitability,too, will continue to improve.

The CGD companies havealready outperformed theirupstream and downstream oil

and gas peers, driven bystrong volume-led earningsgrowth, and margin expan-sion during the Septemberquarter (Q2).

The CGD companies sawimprovement in margins of153-460 basis points in theSeptember quarter year-on-year, while volumes grew upto 40 per cent year-on-year,with Gujarat Gas leading the

pack. Not sur-prising then,that their prof-its rose 25-125per cent year-on-year in Q2.

The for-ward outlookremainsstrong, sayanalysts.Volume growthis expected tobe healthy, ledby increasedavailability of

natural gas, as well as risingdemand for CNG (compressednatural gas) by automobiles,PNG (piped natural gas) forhousehold and industrial use,more so in the back of pollu-tion control measures.

The government, too, aimsto increase the share of gas in

India’s energy mix to 20 per cent by 2025 from the 6 per cent at present, which— along with the thrust topromote use of natural gas toreduce pollution — providesstrong volume growth oppor-tunity for the three listed CGDcompanies.

This, coupled with the allo-cation of cheap domestic gas(for CNG and domestic PNGuse) and low LNG prices, willhelp CGD companies to sus-tain high Ebitda margins, says

national capital region (NCR),use of CNG for inter-city trav-el, increased conversion toCNG on account of BS-VIimplementation, and contri-bution from newer geogra-phies, is seen reporting goodgrowth, which analysts atMotilal Oswal peg at 10-11 percent.

The higher volume growthfor Gujarat Gas is seen drivenby strong industrial sector

demand and supplies. ForFY20 and FY21, analysts atIIFL expect Gujarat Gas to reg-ister 44 and 15 per cent year-on-year volume growth.

This is due to sustainedoff-take from the Morbi clus-ter (given the ban on coalusage); growth in sales to oth-er smaller industrial unitsupon expnasion of its net-work and higher off-takefrom existing players; andstable growth in CNG anddomestic PNG sales.

Though MGL may nothave won new geographicalareas, the management has,nevertheless, guided for 5-6per cent volume growth.

Rising CNG and PNGdemand in Mumbai andpipeline expansions inMaharashtra are likely to drivegrowth. For MGL, the over-hang of stake sale is also overwith Shell India havingalready sold its stake.

As volume growthremains firm, the soft naturalgas prices continue drivingoperating performance andprofits for these companies.Foreign brokerages have alsoupgraded earnings forGujarat Gas by 13-15 per centand for MGL by 7-11 per centfor FY20 and FY21.

IGL, too, is amongst topmid-cap picks of some foreignbrokerages.
