The Adventures of Rooster and BanjoBanjo and Rooster get a Porch

“The Adventures of Rooster and Banjo” will appear periodically as space permits.

After the posts were set, the oor boards went down. Banjo and Rooster helped carry the boards.

The boys had gotten tired of not being able to go outside whenever it was cold and wet. There was only so much fun a 3-year-old and a 4-year-old could have inside without getting in trouble. And they couldn't play in Aunt Nana's garage all the time. “I'm going to build a covered porch,” Daddy declared one day.

Rooster and Banjo thought that was a great idea. “Can we help?” they wanted to know.

“We'll see,” Daddy said. “I'm sure we can nd jobs just right for both of you.”

Soon, Uncle Tractor drove up in his truck, pulling a trailer lled with building materials. Uncle Flick had come to help, too. Holes were dug for posts. Banjo dug holes, too, using his little shovel. Maybe the holes weren't all in the right place, but Banjo tried. Rooster smoothed the ground with his little garden rake. It didn't look quite as nice as the job Daddy had done, but Rooster was working hard.

They helped nail the boards down. They ate a snack on the nished side while Daddy and Uncle Tractor nished nailing. Uncle Flick was just drawing on some paper, but soon, he started working on the roof. The boys didn't know that Uncle Flick was drawing plans to make sure it all worked out just right. They just knew that Uncle Flick would need a lot of help, so they went running over.

The rafters went up and then the tin. Banjo ran inside to tell Mama and Baby Sister to come look. Rooster walked around the new porch, smiling as he imagined all the fun they could have. Daddy was telling Uncle Tractor and Uncle Flick thanks for all the help, so Rooster ran over to give them his thanks in the form of hugs. Banjo stepped outside and decided he needed to say thanks, too. Mama and Baby Sister said the porch was just perfect for rainy days, and sunny days, and picnics. The boys were excited about trying the new porch out for those, and all kinds of other things.

The rafters went up and then the tin. Banjo ran inside to tell Mama and Baby Sister to come look. Rooster walked around the new porch, smiling as he imagined all the fun they could have. Daddy was telling Uncle Tractor and Uncle Flick thanks for all the help, so Rooster ran over to give them his thanks in the form of hugs. Banjo stepped outside and decided he needed to say thanks, too. Mama and Baby Sister said the porch was just perfect for rainy days, and sunny days, and picnics. The boys were excited about trying the new porch out for those, and all kinds of other things.

CHARLENE'S FRENCH BREAD(Makes 3 1-pound loaves)

INGREDIENTS:6 cups bread our

2 teaspoons salt

2 tablespoons yeast

2 tablespoons sugar

1 stick of butter

2 eggs

Hot water

Cut the butter up into a 2-cup measuring cup. Add hot tap water until you're just above the 2-cup mark. That's how Mom did it. Mix the dry ingredients on your mixer's lowest setting. Add the eggs. Move to the next setting on your mixer and slowly add the water/butter mixture. With some mixers, you should start with the liquid, and then add the dry ingredients. Let it mix several minutes. Use your own judgment, and be willing to experiment. If you hand-mix or use a smaller mixer, you may have to knead by hand after mixing. You may need a tablespoon of our here and there or a few drops of water. It depends on many things, including the temperature in your house and the weather outside.

BREAD MAKING, OUR FAMILY TRADITION

Now comes the fun part. Shape it into loaves or rolls. Use loaf pans, if you like. Try this: roll the dough and cut it into circles: brush with into butter and fold in half for delicious Parker House rolls. The size depends on what you want to use them for. I use a small pot lid as a cutter to make poboy buns. A drinking glass makes individual rolls.

My mother was famous for baking. Wedding cakes to homemade biscuits, Mom was an expert. However, the most attention was garnered by her French bread. She donated it to fundraisers on a regular basis. “30 loaves?” she would say. ”Sure, I can do that.”

Then she got sick, and her well-used professional Kitchenaid mixer moved into my kitchen. Every call to the hospital began with, “How are you?” and quickly moved to, “How do you…?” She had committed to make bread for revival meals all week long, but I was the one who got “baptized.” Later, she gave me the mixer for my birthday. She was getting a new one for Christmas. During the interim, she came to my house and helped me bake for a fundraiser.

Whatever you do with the dough, let it rise for about an hour or until it looks like about twice as much as it was. Bake at 350 degrees until you like the looks of it, around 20 minutes. Yum!

Notes and Substitutions: Mom used Pillsbury bread our and 4 egg whites instead of 2 whole eggs. You'll need extra our if you choose to roll the dough out. Carb-watchers can substitute a mix of almond our and wheat our instead of bread our, and either honey or coconut sugar in place of sugar. You can get yeast in little 1-pound bags at Sam's. It's much cheaper that way.

But then she passed away unexpectedly. I had not known what sweet memories they would be, but I'm very glad Mom once made bread with me at my house. Eventually, that mixer died and I bought her newer, hardly used, Christmas present from Dad. I've graduated to a Bosch mixer now, but I still make Mom's bread. I've also taught many of her descendants to make it. My daughter and son not only work with me on The Trader; they make Mom's bread as well as I do. Recently, two more of her grandchildren asked me for help and then taught their children to make it. Now, you can try it, too.
