Clinical activity
Surgical competence is characterized by an in-depth knowledge of the indications and specialty
topics in the field of major abdominal surgery and specific competence in pre- (diagnostic
workup), intra- and postoperative (both in-hospital and out patients) of patients undergoing
hepatobiliary surgery.
Clinical practice is mainly devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of hepatobiliary neoplasms,
to the treatment of portal hypertension and end-stage liver failure, to the monitoring and
treatment of the critical surgical patient.
Has expertise in the surgical management of hepatocellular carcinoma, with particular reference
to patients affected by background cirrhosis, intergrating the surgical treatment with alternative
or complementary options.
Has expertise in the treatment of liver metastases, intergrating the surgical treatment with
alternative or complementary options and tailoring the best timing for surgery with respect to
systemic chemotherapy administration.
Has competence in approaching liver cancer by using two stage approaches like conventional
two stage hepatectomies and ALPPS (Associating Liver Partition and Portal Vein Ligation for
Staged Hepatectomy) procedures, both laparoscopic and open.
Has competence in the preoperative evaluation and optimization of liver function and
regeneration for patients elected to major hepatectomies, contributing to the development of
dedicated protocols including modern diagnostics as hepatobiliary scintigraphy and magnetic
resonance, aimed at the best allocation of patients to different procedures (preoperative portal
vein embolization, ALPPS procedures, conventional two stage hepatectomies, upfront major
hepatectomies).
Has expertise in the laparoscopic miimally-invasive approach to hepatobiliary surgery, including
major resections and difficult resections on posterosuperior segments.
Is part of the the Multidisciplinary EpatoBiliary Team for the definition of the diagnostic-therapeutic
pathway of patients with hepatobiliary disease through regular weekly meetings (surgery,
medical oncology, hepatology, interventional radiology, diagnostic radiology, pathologist).
