It can be the focal point of the home. The table is where we join with our family, friends and potential enemies! It is a social space. At the table we not only feed our bodies but also our minds. Here we have objects that assist us in the rituals that are performed at the table, they become an extension of the body for a short while. We handle, we use, we share: a cup, a bowl, a jug, a spoon. There is a true sense of generosity and through these objects our identity is formed and revealed. Content We will explore the landscape of the table and its potential for sharing, as a surface to work out from, and from which to consider rituals that are related. We will work as a group and share our findings and concerns daily. Fast making will suggest content for thoughtful discussions. Generous reflection will inspire imagination. There will be space for listening, testing, interaction and considered questioning. The expectation is that each participant will define an independent project from this brief and will then work with various and relevant materials. This is not a technical class, at times making will be fast, furious, exhausting and mostly fun! Outcome There will be testing, handling and reflection. The course will help you strengthen an understanding of how to develop tools for experimentation. You will build an archive of possibilities, making models, test pieces, working prototypes and finished pieces and hopefully get closer to understanding, with deeper knowledge, why you make what you make. Suited to This course is suited to people who want to work in three dimensions and who want to think about and understand what they do. Participants need to be self-directed and have basic silversmithing techniques such as annealing and soldering. Course Presenter David Clarke is a silversmith who lives and works in London. Clarke is often cited as one of Britain’s most highly innovative silversmiths. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1997, Clarke has produced a wealth of covetable objects that have proven pivotal in the renaissance of contemporary British silversmithing. Clarke has a well-earned reputation for producing engaging, intelligent and challenging domestic objects. Alongside his own practice, Clarke is Adjunct Professor at Konstfack Sweden. He has taught in Finland, Norway, Germany, USA, China, Japan and the UK. Clarke has exhibited widely, won numerous awards and prizes and his work is in many private and public collections. While in Melbourne, Clarke will be exhibiting with Vito Bila and Peter Bauhuis as part of Radiant Pavilion. www.radiantpavilion.com.au Participants should bring: Materials for making models: old packaging, plastic bottles, cans, paper cups, plastic spoons, paper, cardboard, participants favourite materials, metal wire and sheet, sewing thread, needle, etc. Basic metalworking tools.
