Unique feed Options for 2014-15
• High (DON) vomitoxin Wheat / barley
• Sprouted wheat barley
• Rain washed first cutting alfalfa hay
• High moisture corn
• Coproduct feeds are abundant due to poor
rail freight movement
Potential for Gain*tremendous individual differences*
Dakota Feeder Calf Show data
Project begins its 16th year on October 18, 2014 in Turtle Lake, ND
Top 5 pens of calves, average
• Gained 3.34# per day of age, Feedlot ADG 3.85#
• Feeding profit per head - $441.30
Bottom pens of calves, average
• Gained 2.93 # per day of age, Feedlot ADG 3.41#
• Feeding loss per head - $292.37
All pens of calves – 32 pens
• Gained 3.23 # per day of age, Feedlot ADG 3.62#
• Feeding loss per head - $366.80
Weight gain is:
Affected by the animal
• Size and age of the animal
• Previous feeding history - ‘green’, ‘fleshy’, ‘stunted’
• Sickness
• Implants
• Exposure to wind, snow, mud, bedding
Affected by the feed
• Energy density of the feed - grain vs hay
• Feed additives – monensin & lasolocid improve feed conversions
• Processing and mixing
• Waste/feed loss

A word about rate of gain goals
• Low rates of gain work well for grass cattle
markets <2# ADG
• Medium rates of gain grow cattle without adding
‘condition’ 2-3# ADG
• Higher rates of gain may put too much fat and
may reduce subsequent feedlot performance >3#
ADG However, some cattle are genetically disposed to
gain weight without loss of performance and can grow
and grade extremely well
• Know the historical performance of the cattle!

Summary
. 2014 Feeds costs have declined substantially
. Feed cost of gain projections have decreased 10 cents compared to 2013
. Feed cost per gain continues to decrease as rate of gain increases
. Rations options continue to be many – Different average daily gain
Many local feeds / damaged feeds
Wide diversity of co-product feeds
. All feed prices follow the ‘corn price’
. Backgrounding continues to be a margin business
